Speaking of Hero, we discover a lot about the impoverished and the awful jobs they do to make a living and keep the city’s infrastructure working. What did you learn?

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1392 comments It never occurred to me that flush toilets were such an awful thing for that infrastructure.

Me, either, Charlene, but once I thought about it, it made so much sense. Look at how we’ve shifted to low pressure toilets these days. I’d imagine their systems were overwhelmed.

Joanna | 139 comments How much we take things for granted. They did what they had to do to survive.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments This is why I always love the bits about Hero's work and the interviews she does with the poor. I always learn so much about a side of Regency life that you don't often get in the Jane Austenized depiction of the era. Just the thought of having to do the job of Hole Man to empty out all the privies...ugh. And yet it was 100% needed. Also the poor folks who had to make their living picking up dog poop - and that some people did it sans glove!

The historical facts included in these stories is one of the important elements of this series, in my opinion. I’ve learned SO much.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 849 comments How things really were and worked in that time period really add to the context of these plots.
