Book Trailers - Check Them Out! discussion

Hi everyone! Here's a topic I wanted to bring up. When you are reading books in a series, do you prefer to read them one right after the other and read the entire series at once, or do you prefer to read other things in between?

I usually like to read something in between, but it depends on how long the series is as well. I may read a trilogy one after the other, but if its ten books or more in the series, I'm going to want to break it up a bit. Let me know what you all think?

(For the sake of the question, let's assume the entire series is available.)

If it's a short series, I will read straight through. Sometimes a series isn't available all at once so you end up reading in between too. I guess it depends...*shrugs*

Oh, good point. Let's say the entire series is available to clarify.

Then I'll have to say it depends on how long series is. I'm more likely to take breaks in between and read something else if there's more than three.

I am like Donna, well not like Donna, but I have the same opinion of series reading as Donna :)
If it is a triology I sometimes take a break in between, but it depends on how the books end...minor cliffy or big cliffy!

Good topic!
I enjoy reading a series because when I love a story or the characters, I have to know more.

I also don't mind cliffhangers. I'm patient and there are other books to read while I wait.
But if I have to wait more than 6 mos. for a sequel, I lose interest.

If all the books in a series are out, I can only read two books in a row and would need a change. (Unless all the books are very short and not more than 5 books.)

One more thing, I don't like very long books! : (
There's so much to read, that a book more than 200-250 pages sometimes discourages me unless I'm already familiar with the author's work.

Depends on the series. I usually like to read them all back to back but if it's a series that messes with my head and brings out intense emotions, I have to read something in between every couple of books

I didn't start reading serial books until I joined GR, so I have had some catching up to do on a lot of them. The great part about that is that usually all of the books are out. But if I don't take a break on them and mix it up, I could get burned out.

i usually break a series into 3 book segments. (i used to read a lot of trilogies). some series i hadnt finished yet i been working for years (time, money)

I actually read a series way out of order. Steve Alten's MEG titles, I started with book 4, then read 1,2, the prequel, and 3. Waiting for book 5 now :o) However, I am in the boat as how long the series is and if I keep reading non stop? That author has extreme talent at not boring me. Also, with all the series out, I sometimes read the first 3 in a row, then a while passes between before starting up again, so I like when an author gives a little synopsis of what's happened so far cause I am a dude and my memory ...what was I saying? :o)

It depends on the story line of a series. If it's a different plot and a different set of main characters per book, I'd read a one or two at a time. Otherwise, I'd read it straight up and in order.

Oh it does drive me a little crazy but it's so hard to not stray a little. With all the awesome titles out, and titles I promised to read and review, it's amazing if I can get at least 3 books into a series. The only 2 series I've read to the end was the Percy Jackson titles & the Series Of Unfortunate Events books.

Reading a series out of order drives me nuts lol. I hate it when I read a book and find out it was like the 8th book in a series.

Shari, I was reading this series, and I was on 10 or 11, and it was suppose to end on 12 but didn't. So I cut my losses and gave up. I think there are now 17 books in the series, don't know if that's the end.??
Even at $3 a book, by the time you get to book 20, you' d spent a fortune!! *smh*

Lol have you read Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunter series!? It's like 26 or 27 books and there is no end in sight. I have all the books including her spinoff series. (that woman has made fortunes off of me. I am a very dedicated and loyal fan). I should also mention that it was this series where I picked up one of the books at an airport to read on the plane. I finished it and found out it was the 8th book in the series. Although it could be read as a standalone, I could tell I was missing out on info. Thank goodness at the next airport for my layover, it just so happened to have the first book in the series. I'm very OCD when it comes to book order.

I am OCD too when it comes to book (or movie) order. However, I admit I am intimidated by series that long. I read Anita Blake until volume 10 I think, then she got too slutty and it turned more into erotica than horror so I stopped. (Weird that guys do that a lot huh lol) But yes, I have to read them in order, even if I don't finish, I start at the beginning. I have sadly read some out of order that weren't clearly marked though, so when I write books in a series I'm going to try to keep the order obvious.

I'm a series addict and I will read them one after another in order. I won't continue to another series until I've read everything that is available. I do have to read them in order as I hate getting spoilers for the previous books.

My first massive series was the Dark series by Christine Feehan. There was about 26 books already available and I read them one after another. *laughs* Took me a month to get through them.

Lol I've read the Dark series as well. Although there weren't that many at the time I started. I believe only like 13 out but I stopped at like 18 cause the series started to bore me.

I've always been pretty lucky in catching a series before it gets too big. I told someone awhile ago that I would have never touched the DH series if I saw it for the first time today. Way too many books but I'm too invested and hooked now.

And HEY I read sex books too and they have to still be read in order.

I don't normally read series but if a book looks interesting and it happens to be part of a series I won't dismiss it.

I'm a chronic series jumper. ☺

I try to complete the series if it's a trilogy (Hunger Games, Divergent, FSOG, etc.) but for series that have been around for a while I tend to use them as fillers. For example, there are about 40 books in the J.D. Robb "In Death" series. They can be read as stand alone but by reading them in order you see character development over time.

For me it completely depends on the series. There are some books that I have picked up that I had no idea were part of a series, so I was starting at something other than the first book. If I end up really liking the book, then I will go back and try to start at the beginning.
I think with series that are longer - like the Dark Series by Christine Feehan that was mentioned, it is nice if they can be read as stand alone books, as there are so many of them. I do not necessarily take breaks in between books in a series, but I do usually have 2-4 books going at a time (paperback, phone, kindle, etc), so the series is not likely to be the only thing I am reading.
With the A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones), I read them in order, and would never recommend reading them out of order, as you would be so lost with everything going on and the massive number of characters (and of course, the deaths of many characters!).

Even when people say "oh you don't have to read the first one to read the second", and I'm thinking no ill read the first one thank you..I like to read things from the beginning.

I agree, Justin. I want to read from the beginning. I hate feeling like I missed something when I start in the middle.

I can usually only read four books in a row before I burn out. I start to blur the stories in my head and I begin to forget details. And I need a big break before I pick them up again - at least a few months.

I may start a series in the middle but if I like it I will definitely go back and start at the beginning.

I can only really tolerate three books in a series. But I wil read them in order. If longer than three I'll take a break, come back later.

Unless its 3 or less books, I always read 1 then something else, then back to read another, then something, etc. breaking it up with one other book between each in the series.

I usually prefer, if it's not a short series, to read other books in between. I like a variety and not only one book could provide that. I like to read at least two books at once.

I was browsing a book series recently and actually asked the author if they could convince me to give the book a shot and they flat out said "You don't have to read Book 1 one in fact I'd recommend Book 3".

I was kind of shocked like not only are you not giving me anything on your book but your implying I shpuld skip the first 2 lol.
