as we transition to a new decade, what are your reading goals for 2020?

2020 is upon us and this year I would like to:

1. Continue to read 50% Canadian Content - didn't quite meet this goal but was 47%

2. Exceed 50% content of female authors including more stories by strong, diverse women - 52%

3. Read my shelves including only buying books that will be signed, availing myself of the library and reading more on my kobo/listening to audio from the library. - I did a better job on buying less books and reading from my shelves and using my kobo with library e-books (which was great during the pandemic). without commuting, I have not quite even finished 1 audio book!

4. Although not Canadian, I want to delve into Agatha Christie reading one mystery a month and learn more about her in a biography/autobiography (not sure which it is) - I didn't do so great here. I had hoped to finish the Agatha Christie challenge but only read 2 including the The Mysterious Affair at Styles and finished the year with Hercule Poirot's Christmas.

5. Read all of the Canada Reads short-list - done!! This is the highlight of my reading year!!

6. Complete the Indigenous Reads challenge - I read 6 books from this challenge and hope that others will pick up both Halfbreed and Seven Fallen Feathers: Racism, Death, and Hard Truths in a Northern City if you have not read them!

I also met a goal of having a library room in my house this year - thanks to COVID19, my husband finally had time to change our dining room into a library which makes me so happy!!

editing to update the year

Story (storyheart) Admirable goals, Susan.

I hope to:
-complete the Indigenous Reads challenge
-continue my "read women" focus. This year 66% of my completed reads were by women so I'll aim for something similar next year
-complete a Women in Translation challenge for another group of one book per month

• 12 classic works
• 12 nonfiction
• 4 tomes ≈ 600 pages or more

4. Read the Giller shortlist in the fall

5. Not Canadian, but I also really want to read more things written by these fine ladies:
Alice Hoffman

*updated January 3, 2020 to adjust goals to multiples of 4 for easier quarterly tracking

I don't know if you've used the scanner function on the Goodreads app, but it's pretty neat!

And some of the classics ARE door stoppers!

Natasha Penney | 563 comments My reading goals for 2020:

1. Read 100 books

Included in that number are books to finish the 2020 Canadian Content Bingo Challenge; the Indigenous Reads Challenge; the Giller Shortlist and perhaps the Canada Reads shortlist, depending on the books.

I'd like to diversify my reading to include more international authors, including women.

I'd also like to read Middlemarch this year (I've been inspired by Rebecca Mead), Moby-Dick, or, the Whale and The Count of Monte Cristo.

Rainey | 746 comments Reading Goals 2020:

1. Read 150 books this year

2. Stick to good MC Romance when I read that genre - I have read a lot of trash this year - though its what I needed to get me through 2019.

3. Finish the 2020 Canadian Content Bingo Challenge

4. Finish the Indigenous Reads Challenge

5. Read all of the Canada Reads Shortlisted books (especially since I wont be there this year) - so sad :-(

@Allison hikes - yes, i do use the scanner, i just need to get motivated to get through my shelves... and piles.... and boxes of books. I am hoping that my dining room gets transformed into my library this year (soon) so it will be a project!

@Natasha - Middlemarch has been on my TBR for a long time too!

@Rainey - perhaps you could recommend a couple of great authors from Bermuda for us??

Funny one - Tea With Tracey: The Woman's Survival Guide To Bermuda - which I was given when I moved to Bermuda. The scene with the popcorn on the Christmas Tree - OMG - Seriously Hilarious - also explains Bermuda Milk.

I will give you an example - From the local dairy we have Slimline milk or Pink Milk as the carton is pink - Slimline Milk
Slimline is a 2% reconstituted milk. It is made up of Grade A skimmed milk powder, soybean oil and water. It is also fortified with vitamin A and Slimline is a low fat, low cholesterol milk. This product is also homogenized and pasteurized. Slimline is 98% fat free. It has a sheen across the top - as does the Red Milk as both are reconstituted unlike the Blue and Pink & Blue which are Fresh - I am not making this up

message 18: by Wanda (new)

Wanda | 767 comments Update to my resolutions for 2020, I did continue to support Canadian authors, I bought more books than I planned, I have been in a non fiction book club all year so increasing the number that I read. I read zero classics, and I flip flopped all over the place with lack of focus on any book, never mind reading too many at once. I could not truly follow any audio books at all. I fell short of my 52 book, read 45. I'm quite ok with how I made out, no regrets.
