We'll kick another year off with Festive in Death as our series buddy read moves into its 5th year! Can you believe it? We invite everyone to join in our discussion which begins on the 8th.

Synopsis:
Personal trainer Trey Ziegler was in peak physical condition. If you didn’t count the kitchen knife in his well-toned chest.

Lieutenant Eve Dallas soon discovers a lineup of women who were loved and left by the narcissistic gym rat. While Dallas sorts through the list of Ziegler’s enemies, she’s also dealing with her Christmas shopping list—plus the guest list for her and her billionaire husband’s upcoming holiday bash.

Feeling less than festive, Dallas tries to put aside her distaste for the victim and solve the mystery of his death. There are just a few investigating days left before Christmas, and as New Year’s 2061 approaches, this homicide cop is resolved to stop a cold-blooded killer.

Character List:
Eve Dallas
Roarke
(view spoiler)

Quotes:

[Suspect to Peabody:] “Just shut your mouth, you ignorant twat.”
[Peabody:] “Aw, Dallas, he called me a twat. How come you get to be a bitch, but I only get to be a twat.”
“It’s the rank,” Eve told her. “You’ll make bitch one day.”
[Peabody:] “Thanks. That means a lot to me.”

“You look good.” Trina began packing up her tools. “My work always looks good.... Your man’s going to look strip-me-naked good ’cause he was born that way. You need to look good.”
[Eve:] “I don’t want people to strip naked when they look at me.”
On a bray of laughter, Trina continued to pack up. “They’re going to look at you and think: That’s one frosty bitch cop. Maybe you were born the bitch cop, I added the frosty. It’s what I do.

Detective Peabody came to the bedroom door. Pink cowboy boots, big puffy coat, a couple miles of rainbow-striped scarf and a bright blue hat with earflaps.
She looked, Eve thought, like an Eskimo running away to the circus.

This is now a Spoiler Zone!

It's the 8th! Let's talk! Share your thoughts about Festive in Death! What stood out for you? Any momentous moments? How did the case play for you?

Barbara "Cookie" Serfaty Williams (goodreadscomcookiew1801) | 1573 comments This was fun read with a little murder mix in. The first scene when Trine and her friends find the body had a little funny and shocking. You would think she would had call anyone but Eve. What do you think of that scene?

Michelle | 2651 comments After reading it I wished it listened to it. This was just sad. The case I mean. The two sister were opposites and their spouse so suited them. As for the victim. Not often we get someone that's a scumbag.
I loved how we got to witness their Christmas. The last three books has been about the holidays starting with Thanksgiving. Peabody and the magic coat was adorable. Eve shopping was another moment I wished I'd had the audio book for this. Sometimes I wished the was a visualbook version ( I'm making that word up. I don't want a movie or anything like that.) just sometimes seeing Eve's facial expression could be priceless.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11211 comments Mod
I enjoyed seeing the holidays play out in these books also. Eve & shopping & entertaining is always...well, entertaining! lol And you know my love of Peabody! I also agree this case is a sad one for sure.

Susan (cruelshoes) | 573 comments I really wanted to find out what Peabody gave Eve and Roarke. I love how Robb knows what gifts are given she really knows her characters. I also love how Eve always remembers good people from her past that she finds along the way and always tries to help them out when ever she can Like Tio(I think that his is his name the street vendor) and then the pawn shop. For me the case is on the back burner and I just want to see all the holiday excitement thru Eve's eyes

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3059 comments This is one of my favorite books. Like mentioned, the case is sad. I hurt for Martella when she finds out Catiana is dead. Then when she leans that her sister, Natasha killed her. What a loss for her.

The scene with Catalina's boyfriend is also touching. It breaks my heart when he shows Dallas the key. I wanted to erase the Catiana death scene. I know it is fiction, but it didn't seem fair that she should die. That isn't a negative, death should not be a happy event. Robb shows perfectly how many people are impacted by a senseless death.

What about the case? It's hard to find any sympathy for the villain - an arrogant creep, rapist, blackmailer! What a sense of entitlement! And yet, Eve does no less for him than she would any other murder victim. When did you figure things out? Realize who was involved? Thoughts?

Thoughts on Roarke & Eve in regards to their gifts to each other this year? What did you think?

And while we're talking about gifts, how about Feeney's gift to them?

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11211 comments Mod
Robb has such a way of describing Roarke each time Eve first lays eyes on him in each book. Love this description:

“He looked perfect—as if the gods had gotten together over drinks one night and decided to join together to create something extraordinary. So they’d carved the face of a wicked angel, added eyes of wild blue, then sculpted a mouth designed to make a woman yearn to have it pressed to hers.”

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11211 comments Mod
Talking about having come a long way - what about Eve handling the party prep?? I thought it was brilliant! Loved seeing Eve take charge & start ordering the various vendors around. And then - utilizing Mavis to get more done. Roarke watching Eve as she took charge...some great stuff!

I always feel "less than" (using Sarah Linton's term) when asked when I figured out who the murderer is. I was on board with JJ being the guy. He is just like Trey. They are both users of women. I knew there was something else coming because JJ was arrested with too much story remaining.

I love their crescendo. The fact that Roarke remembered the jeweler means as much to Eve as the gift itself. He manages to get "sparkley stuff" on her.

I love how Eve manages to touch Roarke's heart with her gift. It takes him by surprise that she designed his pin. It is unusual for Eve to be that creative.

Michelle | 2651 comments Sharon don't forget the game she made with help from Feenay. It seems she always has great things for Roarke. I mean she got him a magic coat as well. Love how he was unaware that she was in his domain without his knowledge. Feenay and Eve. That was a surprise. That whole scene was just so touching. And then further to whenshe presented it to Roarke. This moments are the best for me. Usually it's a scene with her and the Mira.'s that have an impact but this book Feeany took that honor.

I like how Robb includes these traditions. Them decorating their own Christmas tree, her finding reading from the book of poetry she gifted him, eve and summerset moritorium over Christmas. Not only these but things like taking time for themselves as a couple. Eve really has come afar way.

No need to feel less than, Sharon. I'm always curious about what clues other readers into the villain - thus asking "when" did it click for you.

I was joking. I'm better than I used to be, but I miss a lot of clues the first time a read a story. After I finish, I look back and realize all the clues I miss. The thing is I'm really good at detective/mystery games. LOL

I know what you mean, Sharon. Even when I have a case figured out, there are still clues I miss but can see once I look back.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 798 comments I especially liked the antique hair pin that Roarke gave Eve, so she had to let Trina do her hair up in back to set that off! Also, I got a charge out of the mistletoe that appeared at the very low back of her evening dress; it was priceless when she shared its "kiss my a$$" connotation....

Yes the pink leather coat for Peabody, the black one Eve had made for Roarke, and the sh*t brown one they planned for Feeney. And
the street kid who hooked up his scarves with the merchant's bags, who acted as a personal shopper for Eve. Amazing the comments each woman made about their special combination.

And, a great gift from Feeney to Roarke and Eve together.

Michelle | 2651 comments Charlene I always love the way Robb does that. And Loved how Tiko added not just scarves but eg Bella got a not just the bag to match her moms but a soft toy as well. That kid really know how to get Eve. I somehow did not expect her to gift Reo. I also wondered what she gave Charles and Mr Mira, if she gave them gifts. Also that Crack was at the party. All these old characters that pop in.

The victim was truly despicable. For me, however, the true villain is Martella. She didn't kill Trey because he was a monster; she killed him because he cheated on her. Her murder of Catriana only compounds her evil.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 1131 comments Sharon wrote: "I always feel "less than" (using Sarah Linton's term) when asked when I figured out who the murderer is. ."

I think the style of writing has a lot to do with when you figure out the murderer's identity. Sometimes the red herrings are convincing; other times there just aren't enough clues, and sometimes you are so wrapped up by the plot and the characters that you aren't even thinking about the culprit. Just read and have fun! :)

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 1131 comments Sandra ~ ♥ Cross My Heart ♥ wrote: "I'm always curious about what clues other readers into the villain - thus asking "when" did it click for you.."

Actually, I thought it was JJ right up until Catriana's murder. He was such an obvious decoy here that I knew Martella was the killer. This is also the point when I realized that the killer had to be a woman - the fact Trey was killed in his bedroom and the knife and note made much more sense with a female killer.

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 789 comments I just recently got to this one (I'm so far behind) and I loved it. Yes, I agree, other than the case, this one was really lighthearted and showed us a bit more about each of the couples in this series. The touching gifts that Eve gave Roarke and Peabody and of course, his to Eve. I really loved Feeney's gift to them.

I thought that JJ was too obvious and there was too much story left so then I started to think about Martella. It seemed more of an emotional killing when Trey was killed which kept making me wonder if it wasn't a woman.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11211 comments Mod
Yay Karen! Glad you're continuing the series.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3059 comments Karen I thought JJ was to obvious too, but it wouldn't surprise me if he was the killer. I did expect an accomplice or something else to show up to round out the ending. I never expected JJ to be set up by his wife. That was a good twist, and just desserts for the jerk the he is.

I read/or listen to part of this book when I don't have time to get into something new. I love the gift sections, and have them marked for quick reads.

That is such a good idea, Sharon. I really loved the lighter parts of this book. The camaraderie between all the characters is wonderful.

I just have to make the time to get to these each month. I really love them. It's like meeting up with old friends.
