I loved how we got to witness their Christmas. The last three books has been about the holidays starting with Thanksgiving. Peabody and the magic coat was adorable. Eve shopping was another moment I wished I'd had the audio book for this. Sometimes I wished the was a visualbook version ( I'm making that word up. I don't want a movie or anything like that.) just sometimes seeing Eve's facial expression could be priceless.
I enjoyed seeing the holidays play out in these books also. Eve & shopping & entertaining is always...well, entertaining! lol And you know my love of Peabody! I also agree this case is a sad one for sure.

The scene with Catalina's boyfriend is also touching. It breaks my heart when he shows Dallas the key. I wanted to erase the Catiana death scene. I know it is fiction, but it didn't seem fair that she should die. That isn't a negative, death should not be a happy event. Robb shows perfectly how many people are impacted by a senseless death.
What about the case? It's hard to find any sympathy for the villain - an arrogant creep, rapist, blackmailer! What a sense of entitlement! And yet, Eve does no less for him than she would any other murder victim. When did you figure things out? Realize who was involved? Thoughts?
Thoughts on Roarke & Eve in regards to their gifts to each other this year? What did you think?
And while we're talking about gifts, how about Feeney's gift to them?

Robb has such a way of describing Roarke each time Eve first lays eyes on him in each book. Love this description:
“He looked perfect—as if the gods had gotten together over drinks one night and decided to join together to create something extraordinary. So they’d carved the face of a wicked angel, added eyes of wild blue, then sculpted a mouth designed to make a woman yearn to have it pressed to hers.”

Talking about having come a long way - what about Eve handling the party prep?? I thought it was brilliant! Loved seeing Eve take charge & start ordering the various vendors around. And then - utilizing Mavis to get more done. Roarke watching Eve as she took charge...some great stuff!

I always feel "less than" (using Sarah Linton's term) when asked when I figured out who the murderer is. I was on board with JJ being the guy. He is just like Trey. They are both users of women. I knew there was something else coming because JJ was arrested with too much story remaining.

And while we're talking about gifts, how about Feeney's gift to them?"
I love their crescendo. The fact that Roarke remembered the jeweler means as much to Eve as the gift itself. He manages to get "sparkley stuff" on her.
I love how Eve manages to touch Roarke's heart with her gift. It takes him by surprise that she designed his pin. It is unusual for Eve to be that creative.

I like how Robb includes these traditions. Them decorating their own Christmas tree, her finding reading from the book of poetry she gifted him, eve and summerset moritorium over Christmas. Not only these but things like taking time for themselves as a couple. Eve really has come afar way.

No need to feel less than, Sharon. I'm always curious about what clues other readers into the villain - thus asking "when" did it click for you.

I was joking. I'm better than I used to be, but I miss a lot of clues the first time a read a story. After I finish, I look back and realize all the clues I miss. The thing is I'm really good at detective/mystery games. LOL

I know what you mean, Sharon. Even when I have a case figured out, there are still clues I miss but can see once I look back.

Yes the pink leather coat for Peabody, the black one Eve had made for Roarke, and the sh*t brown one they planned for Feeney. And
the street kid who hooked up his scarves with the merchant's bags, who acted as a personal shopper for Eve. Amazing the comments each woman made about their special combination.
And, a great gift from Feeney to Roarke and Eve together.

The victim was truly despicable. For me, however, the true villain is Martella. She didn't kill Trey because he was a monster; she killed him because he cheated on her. Her murder of Catriana only compounds her evil.

I think the style of writing has a lot to do with when you figure out the murderer's identity. Sometimes the red herrings are convincing; other times there just aren't enough clues, and sometimes you are so wrapped up by the plot and the characters that you aren't even thinking about the culprit. Just read and have fun! :)

Actually, I thought it was JJ right up until Catriana's murder. He was such an obvious decoy here that I knew Martella was the killer. This is also the point when I realized that the killer had to be a woman - the fact Trey was killed in his bedroom and the knife and note made much more sense with a female killer.

I thought that JJ was too obvious and there was too much story left so then I started to think about Martella. It seemed more of an emotional killing when Trey was killed which kept making me wonder if it wasn't a woman.

I read/or listen to part of this book when I don't have time to get into something new. I love the gift sections, and have them marked for quick reads.

That is such a good idea, Sharon. I really loved the lighter parts of this book. The camaraderie between all the characters is wonderful.

Quotes:
[Suspect to Peabody:] “Just shut your mouth, you ignorant twat.”
[Peabody:] “Aw, Dallas, he called me a twat. How come you get to be a bitch, but I only get to be a twat.”
“It’s the rank,” Eve told her. “You’ll make bitch one day.”
[Peabody:] “Thanks. That means a lot to me.”
“You look good.” Trina began packing up her tools. “My work always looks good.... Your man’s going to look strip-me-naked good ’cause he was born that way. You need to look good.”
[Eve:] “I don’t want people to strip naked when they look at me.”
On a bray of laughter, Trina continued to pack up. “They’re going to look at you and think: That’s one frosty bitch cop. Maybe you were born the bitch cop, I added the frosty. It’s what I do.
Detective Peabody came to the bedroom door. Pink cowboy boots, big puffy coat, a couple miles of rainbow-striped scarf and a bright blue hat with earflaps.
She looked, Eve thought, like an Eskimo running away to the circus.
