Any genre, so long as it is set in Australia or Oceania - Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Tasmania, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa

Possibilities:

A Town Like Alice by Nevil Shute (Australian outback)
Bob by Wendy Mass and Rebecca Stead (Australia)
Micronesia Blues by Cynthia Morris and Bryan Villa (Micronesia)
The Bone People by Keri Hulme (New Zealand)

Nikki (mnnikki) | 164 comments I hadn't heard of Bob before but thanks for the suggestion! I might use it for our homeschool book club, but if not definitely a read aloud with my daughter.

Carolyn Shivanandan | 3 comments Can I suggest some other alternatives, particularly for The Bone People which I have tried to read twice and never finished...
Mr Pip by Lloyd Jones - set in Papua New Guinea, written by a NZer.
The Luminairies, by Eleanor Catton - set on the west coast of New Zealand, during the gold rush days. A bit complicated but one of my favourite books. (And it won a Booker Prize a few years back)

Finished Bob today - I was expecting a sad story (not sure why...) but thought it was really cute and ended up with a big smile on my face at the end.
