Here's a thread for all of you who have decided to tackle the challenge in order this year! What are your strategies? Do you have tips and tricks for people just starting out? Use this thread to vent and celebrate!

Jillian | 2872 comments I just decided to try and read in order which of course is going to be a bit tricky since I also want to focus on series books this year. My goal will be to finish the books in order since I generally have several books going at once but not worry about starting in order. Some of my series books will end up as side reads but I think it should be manageable. I have the first ten prompts planned out and it looks to be a good mixture of audio and ebooks that I own. I just need to figure out a book for the Southern Hemisphere.

Erica | 555 comments I might try to read in order, but I also don’t really want to plan ahead this year. I think I have enough books that I’ll be able to find one each week that will fit the prompt that I’m also in the mood to read. We’ll see how it goes.

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments I'm gonna try and read in order, but I'm a mood reader so I don't know how long I'll last. I have my first book picked out, but I'm not setting any book in stone till I get to the prompt.

Entropia | 283 comments I will be reading in order with a lot of options for each prompt, so hopefully I can always choose something that fits my mood :)

I will be doing the challenge in order again. One of my obstacles/frustrations last time was that sometimes I would get to a prompt that I was really not interested in and be mad because I had already read a book that would work. So my compromise this time around is that if I read a book that would fit *perfectly* for a later prompt, I can stick it there, but I must make that decision immediately after finishing the book. No switching later, and it has to be a glove-perfect fit to put ahead of where I am in the challenge.

Lizzy | 907 comments I’ll be reading in order again. I always list at least 4 or 5 books as possibilities for each prompt... then I don’t have library or mood reading problems.

Alexx (dinosaurslayeggs) | 136 comments I intend to read in order in 2020, subject to book availability. I'll mostly be using Overdrive/Libby for my books, so obviously it'll depend on whether I need to wait for a book to become available, but since I have several library cards, I'm hoping it won't be too much of an obstacle.

Anastasia (anastasiaharris) | 1730 comments I am going to read in order again this year. Since I use the library if the book I want is not available I will just choose one that is.
I have found some great new authors doing it this way.

Sue S | 554 comments I will be reading in order again, for the third time, with side reads of Popsugar and book group titles, and am also reading War and Peace as a group read, one chapter a day, so we will see how that all goes! I find the big advantage of reading in order is that it makes me start on books that I'm never quite in the mood for, but I always end up enjoying them. Very long books do put me behind at times (this year I read 10 of more than 500 pages), but I make sure they're balanced with some short ones. Good luck everyone!

message 11: by Erica (new)

Erica | 555 comments I already changed my plan and the year hasn’t even started yet 🤣 I’m currently in the middle of 3 books which I definitely won’t finish until 2020, and they definitely don’t fit the first 3 prompts. Oh well. Maybe not including these three I’ll read in order.

message 12: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments I'm like a quarter through The Starless Sea so I have to finish that before I can start, although at least I can use it for Popsugar.

message 13: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (kelly_s) | 41 comments I am reading in order but this is my very first ATY challenge so I'm wondering if I've bitten off more than I can chew...doing the ATY challenge AND doing it in order.

...so far, so good....

message 14: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2872 comments How is everyone doing? I'm hoping to finish my prompt number 4 today and 5 the beginning of the week. Since, I like to have several books going at once I'm just finishing books in order. Prompts 6-11 are all books that I want to read print books for so that is making it hard with also liking audio books.

Ann S | 624 comments Yay Doing good Stayed in order for four books. How long will that last?

message 16: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments I'm on prompt #5 and I feel proud of myself! There is a new release I'm dying to read the beginning of February and it fits #8 so I'm trying to knock out the prompts before that so I don't have to wait too long to pick it up.

message 17: by Sue (new)

Sue S | 554 comments I am also on prompt #5 because this is an extra long one (798 pages) so I started it early. We have our local Writers Festival coming up in a few weeks, so am also busy reading for that, but not too worried about keeping up with my AtY so far.

message 18: by Marie (new)

Marie | 1060 comments I'm on #5 too. I whizzed through the first four, but I've been really slow with this one and have stalled at about halfway. It's good, but I'm just not feeling motivated to pick it up for some reason. Maybe I overdid it with so much reading and my brain needs a rest :)

message 19: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2872 comments I'm on to #6. January tends to be a good reading month and then I hit a slump in February. I'm hoping to avoid my slump this year but just in case I'm trying to get ahead.

I'm really enjoying reading in order. I always thought I'd hate it but I'm pleasantly surprised.

message 20: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy | 1137 comments I’m on number 4 (audio) and have 5 checked out and ready to start next week. I don’t try to get ahead of te calendar, but that gives me time for other challenges and side reads when I have extra reading time in a week.

message 21: by Stephanie (last edited Jan 26, 2020 07:42PM) (new)

Stephanie | 93 comments First time for me reading in order and so far so good! It helps that I feel I started off strong with good books so far. I'm halfway through #5. I'm planning on staying with the calendar and that way I can get in some side reads if time allows. I'm finishing off the 2019 ATY prompts this year too (I have 7 left since I started halfway through the year). I have already knocked one of those off the list!

message 22: by Sue (new)

Sue S | 554 comments How is everyone going with reading in order? I have been amazed to have managed every book in order so far, and all in the correct week. This challenge really helps me get into books that I do really want to read (some of which have been on my tbr for a very long time), but would probably otherwise put off in favour of something easier.

message 23: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy | 1137 comments I'm still in order (with one big exception for week 11) but no longer sticking with one per week - I think I'm like 4 weeks ahead at this point. I really having fewer decisions to make, keeps me from getting stalled.

message 24: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2872 comments My goal of having to finish in order is going good and I have been able to stick with it the whole time. There were a few prompts that made me want to go out of order. Not having access to the library did change up some of the books I wanted to read but I have ended up reading more of the books I already own than I generally do. I currently, have books going for prompts 47, 48, and 49. This is the longest it has taken me to finish the yearly challenge so I'm just ready to be done.

message 25: by Ann (new)

Ann S | 624 comments I am mostly sticking with the in order plan. Only two books out of place. And I have slowed down and breathed between books, which is nice. Keep plugging away.

message 26: by Crystal (new)

Crystal | 36 comments I was reading in order until my library closed in March and I only had the books at home. Now they are open for curbside pickup, but only the book they have. So now it is any book I can get a hold of. At this point it is try again next year.

message 27: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy | 1137 comments I’m 3 weeks ahead of schedule now, which I think means I’m mostly on track to get to all my remaining 2020 releases in November so that I can vote with more info in the GRC awards.

message 28: by Sue (new)

Sue S | 554 comments I am still managing to read the designated AtY book in the correct week, and am fitting my Popsugar and book club reads in between. Right on track with AtY and a bit ahead with Popsugar, but I do have some really long reads still to go. Should be okay as my work dwindles towards the end of the year so should have extra reading time in December. Getting through my physical tbr quite well, but still adding more books - cannot resist those charity shops!

message 29: by Sue (new)

Sue S | 554 comments Finished my last book today - stayed on track all year long and will be hoping to do the same in 2021. So glad to have some short ones to finish off as I have had my elderly mother staying as a result of our state borders opening for a very short period - had she arrived 1 day later she would have had to quarantine for 14 days, but if booked 4 days later she would not have been able to come at all as the border was slammed shut again. So happy to be living in a Covid-safe bubble here in Western Australia.
