Ankita (ankita_k) This book's premise is basically where everyone gets a number based on how popular you are. So if you're number 1, you're the most popular in the whole world (I forgot if the "world" was Earth or not, but the setting was definitely in the future, and it did have a dystopian vibe to it, so I wouldn't be surprised if they called the world something elsel). The bigger your number is, the less popular you were. As expected, average people people had bigger numbers, and the MC (a girl) wanted to climb the social ladder and become more popular, because that number defined who you are. She starts average at an average number for sure.

SPOILER ALERT:

This isn't really much of a spoiler, but just to be safe. I remember the MC ends up being top 100 at some point, which is an incredible feat apparently. I remember she also meets some people who actually competed with how big their numbers could get, because they prided themselves in being inconspicuous. I remember the MC being very confused about that.

Spoiler over -

I know this isn't much to go on, but the premise is super specific, and I doubt any other book has this plot. I read this book a couple years ago, and it seemed fairly new, so it was written probably in the early-mid 2010s, or very late 2000s. It wasn't super popular and over-shadowed by some of the bigger YA books at the time, which probably explains why I can't find it now. But this has been bothering me this whole week, and it would be absolutely amazing if someone could figure this out.
