After the third attempt to fulfill the contract on Millie, Argent decides to abandon the effort and pay off the solicitor to cancel the contract, despite the potential damage to his reputation. Do you think even he recognized the depth of his feelings at that time?

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2973 comments I think he knew that Millie was someone special and he just couldn't bring himself to kill her. He related to her protection and love for her son as something that was rare and special and something his own mother did for him.

Robin (robinmy) | 2450 comments I agree with Anita. He compared Millie's situation to that of his mother. He wasn't going to let her be killed on his watch.

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 909 comments I agree with you both. He definitely compared her to his mother.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 1808 comments He knew he was obsessed but the depths of feeling were still anathema to him. For someone so closed off, it would take time for him to admit his feelings as the rest of the book reveals.

I don’t think he understood what he was truly feeling, just responded to his impulses. He was just as confused about it as everyone else except for those closest to him. They knew. And, they knew it was all foreign to him.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1203 comments I agree with Jonetta; I did not get the idea that Argent thought her a special someone, but he was definitely baffled by his own responses to her and his "failure" to fulfill the contract on her.
