Thanks, Dan. My book is at home, so I can help but it won't be until tonight or tomorrow morning.

message 4: by Dan (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dan No problem. I like to go to comment as soon as I finish the week’s reading. Dianne just busy, I hope.

Linda | 1425 comments I'm hoping Diane is OK as well.

I will go ahead and create the thread for the reading that starts today so we'll be caught up to match the schedule.

Dan Just starting this weeks tonight so that’s perfect.

Lisa (lisadannatt) | 105 comments Thanks both

Linda | 1425 comments I’ve got the rest of the schedule sorted out, but I’ll post it tomorrow when I’m on the computer.

Linda | 1425 comments Here is the schedule for the remainder of the book I came up with. We can change it if we need to as we go along, but at least we have the framework set. I tried to stick with ~60-70 pages per week, but some may have more or less so I wouldn't have sections span the different books, and the very last section has more pages because I find that people usually read faster as they get to the end of the book.

Jan 29 - Feb 4: Chapters 18-21
Feb 5 - 11: Chapters 22-24

Book 2
Feb 12 - 18: Chapters 1-4
Feb 19 - 25: Chapters 5-8
Feb 26 - Mar 3: Chapters 9-12
Mar 4 - 10: Chapters 13-15
Mar 11 - 17: Chapters 16-19
Mar 18 - 24: Chapters 20-24

Book 3
Mar 25 - 31: Chapters 1-5
Apr 1 - 7: Chapters 6-9
Apr 8 - 14: Chapters 10-14
Apr 15 - 21: Chapters 15-18
Apr 22 - 28: Chapters 19-22
Apr 29 - May 5: Chapters 23-31 (end)

Bron (bron23) | 50 comments Thanks Dan and Linda for sorting this out. I'm quite happy with this schedule as while I think this may be longer over time than often set out (maybe that's because this is a longer book!). I am much more likely to keep up with this.

Diane, I hope all is well with you.

message 11: by Dan (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dan I did nothing. Nagged. Thanks to Linda for stepping in. Interesting book so far.

Linda | 1425 comments Happy to do it. I wouldn’t have thought to step in if Dan hadn’t have said something.

Sorry to hear of what must be a stressful time for you, Diane! Come back when you can, but no rush. I'll continue to post the weekly threads unless you happen to beat me to it. :)

Take care of yourself!

Nidhi Kumari Hi all,

I missed all January, had to undergo a surgery. Now I am on chapter 2 . I have been reading shorter classics at the time of recovery and now I am ready to take the plunge 😀

Hi All. I finally got a copy of this from the library and am trying to catch up to Feb 10th or so. Like it so far!

Linda | 1425 comments I'm behind. Hoping to finish Book 1 this weekend and get caught up.

Kim (flychickadee) | 15 comments Hi all--

I'm thinking about joining in late, what are people thinking of the book so far (I don't want to look too hard in the discussion threads due to potential spoilers).

I'm in my last semester of grad school, so I have to be more picky than usual on jumping into any group reads late :)

I can totally understand the pressure to pick the right book when you don't expect to have a lot of free time.

I joined late too and so far, I like it a lot. There is something very distinct about it early on, so I think you will know if you like it or not pretty quickly. I don't know how many chapters are provided in the Kindle sample, but that might be a quick way to decide whether or not it is something that you will like.

Thank you, Marie! I didn't even think about the Kindle sample-- even though I've been reading on my Kindle all day :) I will check into that (and the library).

I'd welcome anyone else's thoughts as well!

Linda | 1425 comments I agree with Marie - if you can read a sample of the first chapter or two then I think you’ll know quickly if this book will hold any interest for you or not. And although it’s chunky, it reads rather quickly. I was behind last week, quickly caught up, then read ahead. I had to stop myself from reading any further so as not to get too far ahead of schedule!

Thank you, Linda!

Linda | 1425 comments I just went ahead and posted all the threads for discussing the rest of the book so that they are available for anyone who may be reading ahead, and in case I forget each week like I did this past week.

All the book 3 threads should be in order, but I accidentally posted the last thread for book 2 first, so that one got pushed down the line. It's there, you'll just have to look for it. I should have thought of that before creating all the threads!

I've fallen behind in my reading, but am hoping to catch up soon!

Linda, that's the thing about this book. It reads fast, I was never bored, the pages turned, Murakami never let me down. But I have NO IDEA what the book was about.

message 27: by Nike (new) - added it

Nike I am so sorry, I really looked forward to reading this with all of you but due to illness (not the corona) and due to a family member having sincere problems I have not been able to concentrate on reading. So all I've done so far is having read the first four chapters in the very first book. I will not be able to catch up until the end of April. I am so sorry that I missed out on this.
I hope I can engage in the next big reading. (Will that be "The Count of Monte Christo"?)

message 28: by Nike (new) - added it

Nike Wait a minute ... now I noticed ... Will you keep on reading 1Q84 till May?! So maybe I still have a chance of catching up and still be a part of the group discussions the final weeks? That would be awesome!
(But when will you start reading "The Count Monte Christo"? Not in April then?)

message 29: by Dianne (new) - added it

Dianne Hi guys I am so sorry as clearly I have not been keeping up either! I have been sick and live in Montgomery County PA but I hopefully don’t have the virus! of course who knows since I can’t get tested 🙄 anyways now that I’m homebound I’ll start my process of catching up slowly so if there any other stragglers out there like me or people who want to join late then feel free to join my slow train 😊 be well everyone and hugs!

Feel better!

I'm still straggling! I'm on book one, chapter 13 (I started very late). When I am able to read it, I cannot put it down. Life it just a little... hectic right now.

message 32: by Linda (last edited Mar 22, 2020 01:36PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Linda | 1425 comments I hope everyone is doing OK amidst all the current madness!

I totally understand falling behind because of this, plus the added "not being able to concentrate". I'm still behind, only very slowly catching up. I'm on Book 2, chapter 16.

My schedule is turned upside down now with me home with the kids M-F and trying to home-school them, and then working Sat/Sun by myself so essential experiments can slowly continue, but we can only have one person in the lab at any one time. It is a ghost town here. Crazy times! Anyway, I'm not getting nearly as much reading done after this first week home with the kids as I had imagined. Hopefully this week will be different as we start to find our groove.

Take care everyone!

message 34: by Bron (new) - rated it 3 stars

Bron (bron23) | 50 comments Hi Everyone, just wanted to pop into this thread to see how everyone is going. I hope those who have been unwell are feeling better. I've had my kids home from school for the past two weeks and we have now hit school holidays. So it is a bit chaotic here and we spent most of the last two weeks finding a bit of a 'home school' groove. Next term at least school will be remote learning for all (except those who have essential services parents and those who can still actually go to work) so that will be better for the school routine at home. As for me I am nearly caught up as I also got a little behind. Just starting the book 3 cht 6-9 chunk that is from the week just finished. For once I think I am actually going to finish a chunkster with the group!

I hope all is well with everyone - or as well as it can be under the current circumstances. Stay safe and well! And happy reading when you can ger to it!

Dianne Hi guys I’ve been sick for a while now I was going to pop back into the threads but I’m kind of wondering if anyone would still be there since I am so terribly far behind. I’m not sure if I have the virus because I don’t have the classic fever symptom but some of the other ones are there. Life is very surreal right now I’m a little nervous even to go to the grocery store at this point!

Linda | 1425 comments Dianne wrote: "Hi guys I’ve been sick for a while now I was going to pop back into the threads but I’m kind of wondering if anyone would still be there since I am so terribly far behind."

Oh gosh, get well soon Dianne! Yes, I agree that everything is very surreal right now.

If you are still reading, feel free to post in the threads. I keep checking in on them even though I finished. It was just me posting mostly in book 3 since I think some people finished before all the threads were up. But don't feel like you need to post if you don't feel like it. Do whatever suits you! :)

Glad you are feeling better! I feel frantic every time I go to the grocery shopping and now I only do it every two weeks. Talk about frugal cooking! :P
