Bill Happy 2020 everybody! This thread is to nominate books for the February 2020 group reads. The category is mysteries, thrillers, spy novels published between 1950 - 1959. As I check through my bookshelves I see authors like

- Arthur Upfield
- Josephine Tey
- Edmund Crispin
- Michael Gilbert
- Elizabeth Daly
- Ross Macdonald
- George Simenon
- John Bingham

and so many others. I hope you have fun checking the decade out. I look forward to seeing what is nominated.

The normal rules apply, but the basic one being try not to nominate one we've read in the last three years...

Angelina | 149 comments There’s 14 Agatha Christie’s listed on wiki of correct published between these dates including
A Murder Is Announced.

I can’t nominate as I don’t have a copy of any of them to hand but I would highly recommend any of them to others.

message 6: by Angie (new)

Angie | 19 comments I'll nominate Casino Royale by Ian Fleming, which was released in 1953.

Aditya | 2017 comments Already reported a couple of times but they keep coming back..

My nomination Black Wings Has My Angel by Elliott Chaze, a brilliant noir really underrated. Just read it last year, so probably won't read again if it wins but will love to see what the group thinks of it.

I had a particular book in mind but it turns out to be from the 60s so I'll have to wait. I'm going with my plan B, and nominating She Who Was No More by the writing team of Boileau and Narcejac from 1952. It was the basis of the French film classic "Les Diaboliques," 1955.

The posts won't disappear until support deletes the spammer's profile, but they'll eventually be gone. I only leave them so they can be flagged by our members.

MissLemon | 255 comments I have a copy of A Kiss Before Dying I should get round to reading soon so I will nominate that please .

(Casino Royale is very different from the film I'd be interested in that discussion if it gets voted in)

Bill, would it be all right if I changed my nomination? The book I had originally thought of was actually written in the 50s and won the Edgar in 1960, which threw me off. So if you could please substitute my nomination of She Who Was No More for The Hours Before Dawn, by Celia Fremlin (1958) I'd really appreciate it. Thank you!!

It seems as if the comments have disappeared, so thank you.

Patty | 4452 comments I nominate She Who Was No More.

I read that book and it was EXCELLENT.

The movie Les Diabolique starring Simone Signoret (what an actress; what a woman!) was based on it (not a direct representation of the book. Alfred Hitchcock lost his bid on the book to make it into a movie.

Here’s a link to watch it on YouTube.

Have not seen the movie (I simply don't enjoy foreign language movies) but agree Signoret was a brilliant actress. If you have not seen it yet, I will suggest Room at the Top. She won an Oscar for it and it was as good as any other iconic female role in Hollywood history.

Well, there's always hope, I suppose. I'm going to read it anyway, even if it loses. Maybe we can work up a buddy read in that case?

I'm looking forward to it. I just bought two more of her novels, Possession and Seven Lean Years for later this year.
