The Twilight Saga
question
I think Twilight is racist. Your thoughts?

The werewolves are described as savage, live in virtual poverty and go without clothes most of the time. The Cullens are described, in so many words, as "white" and perfect. And Jasper was a glorified Confederate soldier. What do you think?

I actually agree with you- Meyer appropriated many Native American legends and twisted them to fit the parameters of a YA novel. When people are turned into vampires, it explicitly states that their skin gets lighter, despite the fact that the 'venom' wouldn't affect melanin. The fact that the Native American werewolves can 'imprint' on young children also doesn't help the arguement that the novel doesn't have racist undertones. Bella's pale skin is shown to be a desirable trait, despite the fact that she shuns it and curses her inability to get a tan. The plotline where Bella thought that Jacob was forced into a gang was also incredibly unneeded. Jasper's confederate standing is never acknowledged to be wrong, considering how the fight had major ties to how slavery should remain normalized (though it wasn't the only reason).
It's important to understand that fiction doesn't exist in a vacuum- these characters don't act independently from the writer. The writer has to write these characters to be this way. While Meyer may not have intended to do so, the novel does read with racist undertones.

I suppose it could be interpreted in that way but I hardly think that was Stephenie's intention. Wolves only wear some items of clothing because their clothes get ripped when they phase. They're only described the way they are because they are the vampire's natural enemy. I don't remember them being described as living in virtual poverty. They seem to be in a pretty decent condition. Plus some of the vampires were dark skinned like Zafrina, Senna, Kachiri, Laurent, and probably more, in Twilight, New Moon and Breaking Dawn part 2 so it has nothing to do with race. The vampires are described as "perfect" because of their "beauty" - which is almost an "adaptation" exclusive to vampires because it is used to attract prey. In the end, the werewolves (the proper term is shape-shifters) and vampires all live together in peace. So in my opinion, it is not racist.
I don't think so because racist means judging culture and skin color but there enemies there describing how they see them. PlUS IT"S A BOOK
Come on, it's not like that's the only thing wrong with these books...the countless plot holes are irritating...like how all body fluid turns into venom but saliva doesn't? not any bit of it go into Bella's system when they kiss and change her?..or how about Edward's magic disco ball penis that still has living sperms in it? isn't he supposed to have skin that feels like marble? so kissing should be painful just as getting penetrated by a marble pillar >.<. how about the fact that everything wrong with Bella was fixed when she became a vampire but Jasper still has battle scars? and even if he got them later after he was turned why don't any of the Cullens have scars? how about the fact that Bella worried people would think she's pregnant could be simply fixed by having her drink a lot of champagne and dance her feet off. or how when she was pregnant Carlisle stated the obvious as if it was some sort of secret? like saying the baby isn't compatible with her body...well duh..like saying it's preventing her from getting the nutrition she needs....seriously? so she's not just following some strict diet?...and what is with the visions of Alice? they were described as vivid and shown to be blurry in the first book and movie respectively..now she can foresee a whole battle?
OKAY now you haters lose your mind! HOW IN THE WORLD IS TWILIGHT RACIST?????!!! how i mean give one reason how you may not like it but i do and thats all i need i think SOME people online need to keep there "racist" opinons to themselves.
This series has many, many, many flaws racism is not one of them, they have dark skinned vampires to and the werewolves being savages to the vampires is actually an old story invented before Meyer's time. Pick up Underworld sometime even that movie rehashes that old story. And most stories with Were's don't have them wearing clothes often try Kelly Armstrong or Carrie Vaughn for example, again not an original idea. Vamps are always aristocrat where Were's are normally depicted as savage and beastly. It's suppose to be like oil and water.
As for Jasper, I think they were simply going for a historical background and its' not like all the confederate soldiers actually stood for racism as individuals. General Lee actually hated it, but he wouldn't fight against his family and friends. I also don't remember in any scenes where Jasper is racist to anyone.
So bad plot? Yes. Cliche characters that are boring? Yes?
Bad story? Yeah. Racism? Not so much that I saw.

I think "racist" is, along with "iconic" the most over-used and abused word today. If you really want to render it valueless, just go on throwing it at everything you can think of.
