Nina | 449 comments I just finished A Portrait of a Lady and really liked it for its psychological aspects and characters. It was my first Henry James and now I am looking for more. Does anyone have any recommendations with what to continue?

Squire (srboone) One of my favorite pieces by James is The Aspern Papers. It's a shorter work than POaL. It concerns a narrator who has discovered the muse of one Jeffery Aspern, a lesser known romantic poet, who might just have in her possession some lettters written by Aspern that contain some of his best work.

Edgarf I would suggest The American as a follow up it was written before A Portrait Of A Lady and is a good example of his early period. His last three novels are amazing, but the his prose gets a bit more complex and it may take a while to acquire a taste for it. Daisy Miller and A Turn Of The Screw are shorter works that can be read in one sitting and are both excellent.

I quite enjoyed The Bostonians when I read it many years ago. I found A Turn of the Screw laborious and, after giving it a rare 1 star, renamed it A Tale Written by a Loose Screw.

Kirsten (kmcripn) The only James I've read is Turn of the Screw and I'm of mixed feeling of that one.
