In another thread, I noted that the early parts of the book felt much more political and less magical than the MBotF, but I'm starting to change my mind now. First there was all the stuff in the Citadel in Part 2, with the waking god and the rising waters, and now this. Erikson really has a talent for dropping weird events right into the middle of a story that previously felt quite logical. Poor Raskan!

However Just finished part two and feel as if I am just now unravelling a tightly rolled ball of wool. I hope i like what i find in the middle :)

That's a really good analogy! The plot is incredibly dense, but I think it makes more sense every time the POV returns to a character we've met before. I'm not entirely sure I like ANY of the characters yet, although I don't hate any of them either and they're all interesting in their own right, which is what's keeping me reading.
And yes, I'm starting to think a few notes would have come in useful! :D

Erckson can pack a punch emotionally!"
Definitely agree with that! I found Part 3 incredibly difficult to finish, though, simply because it was so dark. For a while it felt like chapter after chapter of mindless violence, and whilst I appreciate that Erikson's showing Kurald Galain descending into civil war, I felt that some of it was a bit unnecessary.
