Courtney So, I recently just read a book that I enjoyed a lot.

The Calling (Endgame, #1) by James Frey

I didn't realize until after I read it that the author, James Frey, has had a fair amount of controversy around him. His book A Million Little Piecesgot a lot of attention, and was on Oprah's book list. The book was supposedly a memoir, but as it turns out, what Frey had written was largely fictional.

More recently, he's been developing a "fiction factory," a publishing model that engages in some practices that leave a bad taste in peoples' mouths. The authors he works with have terrible contracts, although some have been successful. You can read more about it here: James Frey's Fiction Factory

A lot of people are saying that they won't read anything by him, or anything put out by Full Fathom Five, his "packaging" company. And I completely get that. It sounds like what he's doing is really shady, and I don't think he should profit. On the other hand, it seems better than all the books that are coming out "by Janet Evanovich with some other author whose name no one remembers because the book is billed as a new Evanovich."

What do you think? Do you boycott books when you disagree with their authors views/actions?

Sorry, I saw this a while ago and meant to comment, but never got the chance! I try not to lookup any politics in relation to the authors I read. Mostly because I'm afraid I'm going to find something out that I disagree with and resent the author. But yes, if an author I really liked had completely opposite views as me and was making those public, I would no longer be a fan.

I guess an example would be Costco. I will not shop there because they took two books off of their shelves for their own "political" reasons.
