I'd put them in the same category as beauty spots. They can enhance an already attractive face.
I just took it as a sign of Czerneda's "female gaze" - the men, Malley in particular, are described in excruciating detail, bulging and glistening and being way sexy all around, and the woman, well... she's got nice eyes and dimples, okay? I thought it was kind of a fun reverse of the usual pattern

The thing with dimples, is they usually show up best when someone is smiling. And smiles themselves tend to make someone look more cute, friendly, fun, and possibly even more attractive. at least that’s my thought on the subject.

When I was younger I wanted dimples more than I wanted curly hair. I used to sit with my fingers poked into my cheeks in hopes it would stick. (It didn't.)
Dimples are immensely attractive, especially mine.
Dimples are a deformity. That’s not me, that’s medical science saying it.People who have dimples also seem to have a related attention-seeking personality, which is why a huge preponderance of actors, models and singers have dimples.
So it might not just be the dimples which are attractive, but the concomitant outgoing personality, and we associate the deformed facial muscles with the vibrant “24 hour party people” personality and then transfer that onto the feature.
I’m with Dave in that I find them neutral, rather like freckles. If you’re already attractive, freckles, dimples, beauty marks, even small moles won’t detract from that.

There was the time I went to meet my college girlfriend's family. When I walked in the door with her, her mom immediately said, "oh, he's sooo CUUUTE!" which made me blush.Immediately followed by "HE'S GOT DIMPLES!!"

People sometimes compliment my, erm, *reads above* deformity, so, erm, yeah, I guess some folk like dimples? Also, I am a 24 hour party person, apparently, so that's neat. :P
her dimples obsession is a little weird. but hey there is a lot of unconventional elements in this book. it's refreshing to not have a author go on about tall, blond and blue eyes.

I think it is characteristic of the reality they characters are from. Humans living in close confines, slow changes to the body living in space, maybe it makes you notice a human face more.

I am still not quite finished, but I have a very important question that definitely had to be discussed in its own thread:
How attractive do you find dimples?
I noticed on several occasions in the book that everyone seems to think dimples are extremely attractive maybe even - dare I say it - "arousing" --- so much so that dimples seem to be the only thing we get to know about the looks of certain characters (btw how old is Gail?)...
Now I have nothing against dimples - but I must say, they are not the first thing that I notice about someone. But maybe I am a deviation from the norm; does the world think of dimples as a main beauty feature?
Please, I need to know!
