This is a prequel novella to the author's excellent sci-fi trilogy beginning with The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet. Set during the early years of space exploration before mankind sent colonies out to other planets, it focuses on one ship whose crew's 80-year mission is to observe and document any findings on several planets beyond Earth's solar system. Chambers's world-building is excellent, and immerses the reader in her vision of the future. Here her imagination runs wild as the crew encounters worlds of vastly different types with strange alien flora and fauna.
I was hoping to use this for Poll Ballot Tally, but unfortunately it's too short - though the page count listed varies between 154-176, I discovered that that's only because the book contains a preview of the first few chapters of The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet. The story itself ends on page 131, and that's including a short discussion between the author and her mother, a scientist, on the relationship between science and science fiction. So I can't in conscience use it for the challenge.
