Someone was telling me about a fable they had read online (or maybe physically).
It had the various creatures of the Chinese zodiac competing in a race(? or contest for which was strongest/most like Man?). Basically it used various hurdles as excuses to eliminate signs from consideration, narrowing down who could win.
Two animals (Dog?/Horse?) took an early lead, but got tired. Two remaining animals: Goat(? and Pig?) were stymied by a river. Dragon (2nd place?) got (distracted?) by peasants who needed rain for their crops.
