Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments After adding some promising books to my TBR list, I was wondering when I'd even be back to scroll through the list and pick one to read. I usually just pick a book on a whim or immediately get one recommended by a friend.

Do you go back and actually knock some of these books off your list by reading them? There are just too many good books out there to get to. Makes me frustrated. I want to read them all!

message 2: by Cathy (last edited Sep 17, 2009 03:51PM) (new)

Cathy | 177 comments The books on my to-read list are books that are actually in my house -- I've bought them or someone lent them to me or I just got them from the library. I have a whole bunch of other books that I would like to read and don't have on hand, but I guess I just keep that list in my head. Which is sieve-like. No wonder I never come home with what I intended to get at the library ...

message 3: by Shaun (new)

Shaun (shaunjeffrey) | 245 comments I just read whatever takes my fancy. Many of the books I read are not on my TBR list, especially if they are impulse buys that I start reading straight away.

And perhaps one day I'll get around to listing them, along with more of the hundreds of books I have dotted here, there and everywhere!

message 4: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Oh, I use the TBR list a different way. Guess that's the great thing about that feature. If someone suggests it here or I discover the title in a review source, then I try to remember to add it to my list because I don't like keeping scraps of paper around with book titles on them.

It's just that the list grows so big I feel like I'm suffocating under it and won't be able to get to most of them any time soon.

message 5: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I work in a library and am so tempted every day by books on display that I pass. Someone needs to lock me in a vault with stacks of books and let me read to my heart's content.

message 6: by Cathy (new)

Cathy | 177 comments Oh, that is my fantasy. What I really want to do is run away to a cabin in the woods by a lake with a case of champagne, a couple of boxes of books, one big craft project, and some cooking stuff. ALONE.

I guess I would come back eventually.

message 7: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Sounds pleasant, Cathy.

message 8: by Jason (new)

Jason | 176 comments Slowly but surely I've been reading books on my TBR list but as soon as I read one I add a few more on to the list. Mostly I use it as a reference for books to get in the future.

message 9: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments That's my plan, Jason. But the future never comes.

message 10: by LinBee (new)

LinBee Mine is a bit of a lottery. I pick up books that look like I would want to read them. To avoid taking them home everyday (I work in a library too, and have brought home many a stray that sat there for a month before I decided to just take it back.), I add them to my TBR list. Sometimes, I will refer back to the list and pick one. Or sometimes, I end up picking up the same book again. I usually update the status as I pick them up. Change them to current as I read them, weed them if I am done with them. Whatever mood I'm in that day. I probably will never complete my TBR list, but at least I am not lugging around a notebook with all the titles like I used to. That was hard work.

message 11: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jaimie476) | 0 comments I just read what I'm in the mood for. Tressa and Jason, I use it like you two. I doubt I'll ever get to them all. I did once write down a bunch of them from my list as a shopping list to take to a used book store. :-)

message 12: by Chris (new)

Chris (flahorrorwriter) | 2844 comments Not really, Tressa. Pretty much 90% of my unread books are on my TBR mountain (lol) and it keeps friggin' growing. Well..,let me amend that a bit. A few years ago, after moving into my new house, I had to go through my boxes and boxes of paperbacks (and some hardcovers) and purge some titles that I had for several years but hadn't read yet. A used bookstore a few miles from me has most of them and I have like $200 bucks in credit...so...if I am really hard up for any of 'em I should be able to go pick one out...lol

message 13: by alicia (new)

alicia grant (shesha556) I have been pretty bad about going to my TBR list and picking one up.Books that i hear about or part of a group read,or series books i like,or even books just browsing through the library get in the way all the time.I am actuall hoping to recify that next year and pick at least 12 books that have been on that list.

message 14: by Anna (new)

Anna (stregamari) | 251 comments I just keep adding books, I have a terrible feeling that I may never get to them. It's very comforting to know that they are there, and I will never be without new books to read. Our library lets you sort through all of the incoming new books that have been ordered, so that you can reserve them before they hit the library! (I almost fainted with excitment when I figured out how to do that!) So, I always have the maximum books on reserve on my card. and my husbands and kids.

message 15: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I just finished one book from my TBR list: Live Girls by Ray Garton. Loved it!

message 16: by Chris (new)

Chris (flahorrorwriter) | 2844 comments You're not alone in that, Anna. My TBR mountain grows monthly....unending...oh well...I don't mind! ;)

do you all remember that twilight zone episode; this guy loves to read, only wants to be alone. He's underground in a bank vault for something, and the whole world dies! just disappears! but, he can't read, because his glasses broke. My sister and I were watching, saying, oh yeah, that'll happen to us! irony?

message 18: by Cathy (new)

Cathy | 177 comments Yeah, that was nightmarish! Fortunately, I have excellent vision. ;-)

message 19: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments That's one of my favorite TZ episodes. How I envy that man.

message 20: by Mechelle (last edited Sep 30, 2009 02:02PM) (new)

Mechelle | 8 comments Having a list if TBR books helps me to shop in used book stores -- I keep a list in my glove compartment. Horror is generally in one section so it is easy to browse everything. Not so with general fiction! This is great for finding authors that are new to me as I never can remember all of the names.

what a great idea, to have a list always handy! I spent the day thrift shopping, we are getting together steampunk outfits for a convention. I picked up a bunch of really random books, "beast in view" by margaret millar (i've never heard of her) and "creepers' by david morrell. at least I only paid a quarter for them if they are crummy!

message 22: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jaimie476) | 0 comments A used book store with with a horror section? Is it in Heaven? :-)

Jerrod (liquidazrael) | 706 comments Jaimie wrote: "A used book store with with a horror section? Is it in Heaven? :-)"

I've noticed that they have been returning. A multimedia store in my area recently relocated and renovated, when they reopened, they magically had a horror section again!

message 24: by Chris (new)

Chris (flahorrorwriter) | 2844 comments Jaimie, there's one about 30 minutes from me that has the biggest horror section I've ever seen...impressive (for a used bookstore)...talk about a kid in a candy store! ;)

message 25: by Cathy (new)

Cathy | 177 comments Well, if you consider North Hollywood to be heaven. ;-) It is an awesome bookstore, though -- Iliad books. And mere blocks away there's Dark Delicacies, which is an entire bookstore devoted to horror!

message 26: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jaimie476) | 0 comments I'm so jealous of all three of you! Cathy, I read about Dark Delicacies a few years ago in Rue Morgue magazine. If I ever get up that way (I'm in San Diego), I'm definitely making a trip there.

The independent bookstore I go to here is called Mysterious Galaxy and they only sell fiction, sci-fi, fantasy, horror, mystery, and romance. But they moved to a new location about 10 years ago and they condensed their horror section down to two large book cases.

message 27: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin (ben21) Everything on my tbr list, i have. I use a kindle to read, so Im constantly adding to that list since its so easy to get books lol.

message 28: by Chris (new)

Chris (flahorrorwriter) | 2844 comments DD is a legend in the horror community, amongst the diehards. I've only been to Cali once, when I was little...actually, Jaimie, it was San Diego, where I have family but it was a pretty cool city, from what I remember.

message 29: by Brett (new)

Brett (battlinjack) | 487 comments I don't really use a TBR list. I am an obsessive collector and a true bookaholic in every sense of the word and am constantly picking up books I want to read. So by now I have a library of 6,000+ and around 2,000 of those are TBR.
I like to have a wide variety to choose from as I tire of one genre or style of writing and can go to something completely opposite.

message 30: by William (new)

William (acknud) | 0 comments I use my TBR for what I think its purpose is...a large evergrowing resource pool. I do read books off it though. I know it will never be depleted but working on it is fun.

message 31: by Chris (new)

Chris (flahorrorwriter) | 2844 comments Me too. My TBR mountain is only stuff I own...

message 32: by Brett (new)

Brett (battlinjack) | 487 comments Chris wrote: "Me too. My TBR mountain is only stuff I own..."

Well...yeah. A Wish List is for books you want to read but don't own. A To Be Read list is of books you already own but haven't read yet.

I'm only saying this because I'm a bit confused if you are being sarcastic/funny or ?
Of course, I just woke up and may be simply confused. -grin-

message 33: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments My TBR list is a list of books I want to read. Doesn't matter if I own them, am planning to buy them, or will get them from the library. They are To Be Read one day soon or in the future. If someone suggests one or I read a review in a magazine and it sounds good, I put it on my list so I won't forget the title.

message 34: by Brett (new)

Brett (battlinjack) | 487 comments That makes sense I guess.

I HAVE been accused of being a bit anal in my use of terminology in the past. -grin-

Not by anyone here!

Yet!

message 35: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments It's OK if it only makes sense to me, Brett. 8-) I am soooo forgetful about books I want to read that I want to make sure it's on a permanent list where I can get to it easy. That's what GR is for.

message 36: by Brett (new)

Brett (battlinjack) | 487 comments You and me both Tressa. My memory is so bad any more. I buy these spiral notebooks and make lists of everything. Mostly of books I want or need. Only problem there is finding the list in the notebooks.

I keep meaning to put it all on my Mac notebook so
I can take it with and look things up. I am CONSTANTLY bringing home books that I already have!

Every once in a while I ask the store to let me on a computer so I can look at my LibraryThing account. I keep my entire library listed there.
They used to look at me funny but I got used to it and they got used to me. -grin-

100% agreement.

message 38: by Brett (new)

Brett (battlinjack) | 487 comments Oh yeah, As far as referring to my TBR list for my next book...rarely if ever. My TBR list is out on my bookshelves all around me and I paw through them when looking for my next read.

The one, major problem is that I am easily distracted and will scan a book, read the first few pages to see if It's calling my name yet and will end up forgetting what I'm doing and simply read.

That's one reason I have several books going at once which is cool. there's the one that goes to the Dr's office and the one for dinner time reading. The one in the car on tape and the one ....

message 39: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Brett, I juggle several books at a time too. If one is so much better than the others, I'll zip through that one. Since I want to read more hours in the day than I have available, I'll keep one at my desk at work so I can read it on my lunch hour, will have one for home, and will be listening to one in the car.

Agreed! Those librarians and their multi-tasking.

And my TBR list is just books I want to read whether I own them or not. I have a seperate "shelf" that just catagorizes out the ones that I own.

Do you keep a book on each end table, and next to your bed also? :) I do that sometimes, and confuse the heck out of myself! somedays I try to read all day; while cooking, doing laundry, feeding the animals. End up buying those books from the library, can't give them back covered in food.

message 43: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I've got several books on my bedside table. Several on a table by a chair in the living room. At least two under my desk at work that I can pull out and take to the break room.

When my son gets up from the kitchen table my husband and I flip open our books. We just love to read. Sometimes I enjoy having a cold just so I can lie in bed groggily all day and read to my heart's content. Sick, huh?

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Can't believe I haven't caught the flu yet! I work in a public place where people are coughing up on me all day long. Two weeks out with the flu--drop ten pounds and read to my heart's content...when I'm conscious.

message 46: by Chris (new)

Chris (flahorrorwriter) | 2844 comments I usually have a hardcover (but not always) going at home and I take a paperback with me to work. SOMETIMES if I am reading a particularly dense, long book I will take a break and read something fast and easy...

Take my advice, and do your best to NOT catch the flu! I did, it went from "feeling crappy" to pneumonia in three days! Fevers of 102, I felt so bad I couldn't even read! now that sucks

message 48: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments You're right, Marisella. Maybe just a cold but not the flu. I've only had the flu once or twice in my entire life.

message 49: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig Like others here, I use TBR as a good place to remember books I want to read. I fear the list grows and grows which just reminds me that there so much out there...kind of depressing, but a good memory tool.

I keep a stack of books next to my chair and pick up the one that I am most interested in at the moment.

I have a shelf reserved for library books and am always scrambling to read them before they are due.

But there is usually at least one that is my primary book at the time. It's so hard when so many more books keep showing up! -grin-
