Jen K | 3143 comments Sherlock Holmes has "retired" to the country, recovering from a possibly unhealthy lifestyle, taking up beekeeping and other studies and experiments. Mary Russell is a precocious teen also in the country to recover from a brutal accident that took the lives of her immediate family. She stays with an aunt who seems to be more interested in the pay of the guardianship post than her niece. Mary avoids her by taking her books and studies for long walks in the country when she stumbles upon Sherlock. They immediately spark a friendship recognizing a kindred spirit in passion for study, investigation and truth. Sherlock and his housekeeper take Mary under their wings and help her grow under an apprenticeship and with a mother like figure. Sherlock and Mary partner in a few investigations when they find their lives in danger unless they can solve the mystery of the mastermind.

I remember loving the cases of Sherlock Holmes when I was young and this one didn't disappoint in the similar application of logic to solve the case. The relationship between Mary and Sherlock was a bit overly complicated than necessary with numerous hints and suspicions that their relationship was more then just father-daughter. I would be interested to read the next in the series but wouldn't mind that aspect being lessened.
