I would really recommend this book. It's one of my favourite children's books.

X Marks The Spot by Joan de Hamel

Cop the pilot is badly injured when his helicopter crashes on a secret mission. Peter, Louise and Ross have to make their way across uncharted bush to find the mysterious X, pursued by dangerous men.
