Corelli’s Mandolin
question
What do you think about Carlo Guerco's character?

I'm obsessed with Carlo. I cried a lot of times just remembering his tragedy.
However, do you think he had any redemption after all is his misfortunes? Does him saving Corelli count as one? or does it only add up to the injustice he suffered as, as the character described himself, a 'degenerete"?

Well, it's difficult to say. Due to the unbearably awful treatment of homosexuals at that time, Carlo probably considered himself a "degenerete" no matter what he did. I'd like to think that his gentle nature and ultimate sacrifice of himself for Corelli add up to his redemption. I no doubt believe that he died in love and not at the hand of misery and torture.
He was a memorable and loveable character. Wonderful but tragic book.
