You can use the first letter of the first or last name of the author. The last name is ideal, but its harder to complete the challenge. Use first name in a pinch, after all it's your challenge.

Okey dokey, that sounds more fun, and as though it will lead to more previously untried writers! Thanks, Bob.

Congrats Miikka, for me this is one of the hardest challenges we do, I failed last year, and with 11 still left, I seem to be heading that way again this year.

wtg Miika :-)

BTW Pink those are the same three I'm missing, have to figure out what to read for Q, it's the hardest one for me...

message 27: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Yep, Q is the tricky one for me, I'm currently reading a 'U' book and have one lined up for X, but I have no idea for Q.

Niles (professorx2) | 35 comments Pink wrote: "Yep, Q is the tricky one for me, I'm currently reading a 'U' book and have one lined up for X, but I have no idea for Q."

May I suggest Quo Vadis. It is fairly long but a great rendition of Rome in the time of Nero.

message 29: by Tytti (new)

Tytti | 1010 comments It's the author challenge, Niles, so that won't do unfortunately.

I have on my list Ellery Queen, Yann Queffélec and Thomas de Quincey whose Confessions of an English Opium Eater is a classic of sorts.

Nathan | 302 comments Bob wrote: "I ended this years (2014) challenge 4 letters short of completion- Q, U, X, & Y. I don't know if that help anyone. As for me I know I have to plan for these four well in advance. "

Like Bob, I didn't complete Q, U, X and Y in 2014 when I did this challenge with another group. (You all are much cooler - I'm so glad I found you!) When I decided to participate in this year's challenge, I allowed myself to cheat on X and Q
and just read books by authors who had that letter somewhere in their names.

For Q, I read Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez. But since I read it, I came across The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick. The movie is great and I'll read the book later this year if I manage to complete all my other challenges.

I like it that this challenge allows for contemporary books. I've been very interested to see all the wonderful contemporary works this group of classics readers has chosen. You all have good taste!

message 31: by Pink (last edited Jul 01, 2015 03:03AM) (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Tytti, Thomas de Quincey could be a good choice for later if I haven't found anything else by then.

Nathan, I've read Silver Linings Playbook and really enjoyed it, so maybe I could try something else by Matthew Quick as well.

My X book will be the Autobiography of Malcolm X, which has been on my shelf for a while.

I've found the book title A-Z much harder than author so far.

Myst | 147 comments For those stuck on Q, how about Chelsea Quinn Yarbro ?

She even has a pseudonym that could work:
"Known pseudonyms include Vanessa Pryor, Quinn Fawcett, T.C.F. Hopkins, Trystam Kith, Camille Gabor."

Perhaps Amanda Quick

Edit:
Arthur Quiller-Couch
Alissa Quart
Ann Quinton
Xavière Daumarie is a stretch, he's the illustrator of a book turned comic book (graphic novel?)

You're doing much better than I am, I've read 48 books and still have 10 letters left to finish. Some seem like they should be easy E, F, I, J, ,Q, T, U, X, Y. Seriously E, F, & T should not be hard to run across. With 4 1/2 months left in the year I think, just like last year, this challenge will not end with success.

I have a better chance with the Title A-Z with only H, Q, U ,V, Y, Z left.

message 47: by Julia (new)

Julia | 59 comments Hello everybody! I love challenges, but I don't like to let them affect what I read. Instead, midway through the year I glance at the challenges and see how I'm doing. I readily admit I moved authors around a bit here since so many of those I read this year have initials clumped under A, J, and (oddly) K, as well as M and S. But hey, it's all about the reading, so I don't mind cheating a bit.

A Jane Austen Pride and Predjudice (also Persuasion and Sense and Sensibility and Mansfield Park - they're like potato chips, those JA novels are) 4/2015
B Charlotte Bronte Jane Eyre 5/2015 (and Emily's Wuthering Heights in June as well!)
C Kate Chopin The Awakening 7/2015
D Daniel Keyes Flowers for Algernon 6/2015
E George Eliot Middlemarch 6/2015
F Stephanie Feldman The Angel of Losses 5/2015
G Neil Gaiman Odd and the Frost Giant 3/2015
H Katherine Harbour Thorn Jack, Briar Queen 8/2015
I Ishmael Beah Radiance of Tomorrow 2/2015
J Erika Johanson Queen of the Tearling 10/2015
K Kate Milford Greenglass House 3/2015
L Harper Lee Mockingbird 6/2015 Watchman 8/2015
M Margaret Atwood MaddAddam 1/2015
N <-- I could have put a different Neil Gaiman here, but even I accept that as excessive cheating :-)
O Jussi Adler-Olsen Purity of Vengeance 5/2015
P Kennedy Odede & Jessica Posner Find Me Unafraid 5/2015
Q
R Mary Doria Russell Epitaph 6/2015
S Jonathan Stroud Lockwood & Co: Screaming Staircase (#1), Whispering Skull (#2) 10/2015
T
U
V
W Meg Wolitzer The Interestings 4/2015
X
Y
Z

Best of luck to all, I shall now try to capture a few books written by authors in the N, Q, T-V and X-Z shelves.

message 48: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellevoorhees) | 73 comments I only have the letters E U and X left. I have books lined up for E and U, but I am having trouble finding somebody for X that is both attainable and interests me. I may just use somebody that has X in the last name, but we'll see. :)

message 49: by Bob, Short Story Classics (new)

Bob | 4602 comments Mod
This challenge seems destined to failure, I have 8 letters left and 2 1/2 months left to finish. Some of the remaining letters seem like they should be easy, but unless I ignore my other reading and hunt for books to read that will match my missing letters, this challenge is going up in flames. On the up side there is always next year.

message 50: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments I wouldn't worry Bob. I completed this one relatively easily, except for 3 or 4 letters which I actively sought books for. However the book title thread is a different matter. I still have 6 books to go for that and don't really expect to finish any of them. Challenges are fun and can broaden our reading, but they shouldn't take precedent over reading books for personal choice.
