Hello, Team Lucky Charms!

As a reminder, here are the people on this team:
Team Captain: Laura
ZeeJane
Ellie
Sarah (Message 42)
Karissa
Tracy
Rachel
Joan
Sherri
Jen K
Vanessa
Sarah (Message 48)
Johanna
Chelsey
Traci

The rules can be found at this thread.

Your team should begin by choosing which level they will tackle first! You must complete the level you chose before moving on to the other levels.

For each word/phrase in a level, you must fill it in one of four ways:
1: Both of the author's initials are in the word/phrase
2: The word/phrase is in the title
3: The cover depicts something related to the word/phrase
4: The word/phrase is written exactly or acted out within the book

The words/phrases are:

Big Cat Level

1. Sahara desert
2. pride
3. fastest mammal
4. kittens
5. whisker
6. tigers and panthers
7. rescue
8. The Lion King
9. roar
10. Shere Khan

Puppy Level

1. dog breed
2. animal shelter
3. labrador
4. lick your face
5. sit and stay
6. tennis ball
7. who's a good boy?
8. Snoopy
9. let's play fetch
10. fluffy

Dinosaur Level

1. carnivore
2. extinct
3. munching on leaves
4. stomp
5. Jurassic Park
6. triceratops
7. ancestors to birds
8. roaming the land
9. t-rex
10. ancient predators

Insect Level

1. spider web
2. creepy crawling
3. legs
4. thorax
5. millions of bugs
6. ants
7. grasshoppers
8. many species
9. springtime
10. don't step on them!

Don't forget to track your pages read each day! This can earn you Wild Cards to knock out those tricky words.

Here is a link to your group spreadsheet, where you can track and plan: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

Happy reading!

Reminder: The Read-A-Thon does not begin until you wake up on Saturday. Use this time to plan your books and start strategizing!

Sorry for putting two Sarahs on your team 😣 I wanted the time zones to be close! Y'all just figure out how to differentiate!

Hello everyone! Excited to get started :)

So this is quite a bit different than the previous RAT I did and I'm trying to get my bearings, lol. It looks like the first thing we need to do is pick a level to work on-I'm only partway through a book right now so it will carry over into tomorrow (will have at least 100 pages left, to qualify), and I think it would fit prompts for Big Cat or Dinosaur, and possibly Insect, if I'm understanding the rules correctly. So I vote for starting with one of those :)

eta: could someone check that I'm understanding correctly-if we were working on Big Cat, could I use Subhuman by Michael McBride for 3. fastest mammal, because the author's initials are M, M and there's two m's in mammal? Or am I looking at this wrong?

Sherri Harris | 1493 comments Hello Team Lucky Charms. I feel very lucky to be on this team. This is my first read-a-thon. The nerd in me is definitely coming out. I am ready & excited. Good luck to everyone.

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11184 comments Mod
ZeeJane, that would work for author's initials, yes! It would also work for title, because every title word (in this case, there's only one title word) begins with S, and there is an S in "fastest mammal".

A book like A Game of Thrones would need a word/phrase that had A, G, O, and T in it.

Yes, that's d work. I asked about same initials because I'm reading a book by Laura Lam (and fortunately there are lots of double Ls).

For anyone reading on Kindle, the search the text feature will be really useful for finding those words. I'm going to search Goldilocks once I finish work to see where else it fits.

Yay, welcome to the 'thon!

Great, think I have a good understanding of what the rules are now :) So my current book/what I'll be reading tomorrow would work for all the categories, so whatever everyone else wants to start with is good with me!

message 10: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments Emily, the rules sound like the whole word/phrase needs to be in the title? Can you make it a bit clearer if that's not the case? And thanks for all your work putting this together!

message 11: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1493 comments I am currently reading A Madness of Sunshine by Nalini Singh. I will definitely have over 100 pages left to read tonight at midnight so I’m good for Saturday. I think it will work for the author’s initials for all levels. On the insect level the phrase spider web is used. They also describe the spider as having hairy legs. The book is set in New Zealand so at this early stage it is fall but springtime may appear before the end of the book. My game plan is to ask all of you if anything will work if I get stuck. I haven’t studied all levels yet because once we pick a starting level I will focus on filling prompts with my read then.

Oh no! You're right Ellie! 😬 Ignore what I just said about the title letters... I forgot that we changed the rules before posting.

message 13: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 572 comments Thanks Ellie and Emily for clarifying on the title rule. Also thanks for the amazing tip on searching in text on the Kindle. I had no idea!

Super excited for read-a-thon! My hold for The Testaments just came in so I will be starting with this book and also listening to The Source of Self-Regard: Selected Essays, Speeches, and Meditations with well over a 100 pages left to qualify. I think these would work with any level.

message 14: by Karissa (new)

Karissa | 440 comments Yay Team Lucky Charms! I think I'm going to readConvenience Store Woman first which would work for all the levels.

Hi Team!!

I'm really excited for this read-a-thon. I've been doing better with my reading so far this year but I want to catch up with my goals a bit.

I'm about 70 pages into The Whisper Man so I'm hoping to finish it either tomorrow or Sunday. I can go through and look at where it counts once I'm off work later today :)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Hi Team!!!!!! I am so excited I wish it was saturday morning !!

I will for sure be finishing A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin this week. It's my kindle book for bedtime and I have around 300 pages to go. I just had to laugh when I looked at the categories and realized how many letters are in my title/authors name LOL. Excellent. I am quite sure it will work for Insects though because someones legs get chopped off every hundred pages or so ;-)

I also have a huge stack of library books here and more coming in tomorrow, plus a large amount to choose from on my plans.

Lets do this!! Have fun everyone :-)

message 17: by Johanna (new)

Johanna Ellwood (jpellwood) | 327 comments Okay y'all. This is my first read-a-thon. Do we pick one of the prompts for each level? Do you have to do each prompt one time?
Do we as a group decide the order we are reading in and they have to be completed in that order?

Right now I have The World Without Us by Alan Weisman which would probably qualify for puppy and insect, Whiskey in a Teacup: What Growing Up in the South Taught Me About Life, Love, & Baking Biscuits by Reese Witherspoon which again will probably work for puppy and insect.

message 18: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11184 comments Mod
Johanna, your group should pick which level they want to tackle first, but within that level, you can read for the words/phrases in any order, and you don't have to claim the word/phrase before you read the book.

message 19: by Johanna (new)

Johanna Ellwood (jpellwood) | 327 comments Ooooh, thanks for the tip about seaching a kindle book. I forgot that I had just started reading Less and he is going to take a trip to the Sahara Desert. I'm in luck!

message 20: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sezziy) | 614 comments Hi team (apologies for the popular name, haha). I'm currently reading The Toll if it helps pick which level we go for.

message 21: by [deleted user] (last edited Feb 21, 2020 12:50PM) (new)

Looks like most of us have checked in-should we go ahead and pick a category so we can start narrowing down the prompts? Laura, since you're the team leader do you want the honor of picking? :)

message 22: by Tracy (last edited Feb 21, 2020 01:19PM) (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments I'm starting Dumplin' by Julie Murphy tonight. Its over 300 pages so I'll have plenty to read tomorrow to start off the challenge. Also will be reading some A Clash of Kings tonight But I'm not sure how long it will take me to finish.

Books out from the library that I need to get done this week:
Sadie by Courtney Summers
Home and The Night Masquerade by Nnedi Okorafor
and
Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs? Big Questions from Tiny Mortals About Death by Caitlin Doughty

Covers:
Dumplin' (Dumplin' #1) by Julie Murphy A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, #2) by George R.R. Martin Sadie by Courtney Summers Home (Binti, #2) by Nnedi Okorafor The Night Masquerade (Binti, #3) by Nnedi Okorafor Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs? Big Questions from Tiny Mortals About Death by Caitlin Doughty

Doesn't matter to me what order I read my library books in and they're all quick reads, so I'll probably get a few done this weekend. Let me know if any fit our chosen category better than others and I'll start there.

Re-read this, and I'm confused lol. What do you mean for title-I don't see a spell out title option for the rules?
How does the bolded fit into one of these? (using my original example of Subhuman by Michael McBride )

1: Both of the author's initials are in the word/phrase
2: The word/phrase is in the title
3: The cover depicts something related to the word/phrase
4: The word/phrase is written exactly or acted out within the book

I misspoke about the title, ZeeJane. Just ignore my title thing... we changed the rules before posting and I forgot 🤦🏻‍♀️

Subhuman would fit with the author's initials, and of course, if any of the items were in the text.

message 26: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1493 comments Could someone help me with the spreadsheet. Once the read-a-thong starts how do we add our pages & prompts completed. How do we edit? I downloaded the app. How do I find the spreadsheet?

Ok so you will need to be logged in in order to keep it in your sheets app, but if you have a gmail, the program is free.

You will add your pages under your name on the first tab. If you click in the cell, it should pop up with a box that says "Enter text or formula" and when you click on that box, the keyboard for you to type into the cells should pop up.

When you're done typing, hit the check mark in the upper left corner to clear away the box. You should then see the tabs at the bottom... clicking on those tabs should allow you to see the prompts for each level.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

message 30: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1493 comments I am sorry to be dense but this isn’t working for me. I am logged in to Google sheets when I open the app on my I pad. There is nothing there & When I search nothing shows up. When I open the link provided on the thread, nothing. Also I can’t sign in.

message 31: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11184 comments Mod
I'm not sure because I usually just access Goodreads and the spreadsheet on my laptop (I hate the app for this reason!)

I'm not sure how to fix it, but if you're still having trouble accessing the spreadsheet, you could just post your information here (books you're reading and what it fits) and your team captain can input the information for you.

message 32: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1493 comments I know but I would really like to use the spreadsheet. Should I be able to edit the spreadsheet on an IPad?

message 33: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3266 comments I have no idea which book I'll be on tomorrow, so I'm not sure which list I'd want first. I'm currently reading There's Something About Sweetie but I'm hoping to finish that off tonight, and ideally start on something else. I'm just not sure what my next book will be.

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments Sorry to ‘bug’ in your team thread, but I happened to see your question Sherri - and I think you might be able to edit the sheet if you open the link in post 1 via safari/browser on your iPad, instead of opening it through the GR app. Fingers crossed it will work 🤞🏻

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments Good morning. My copy of Goldilocks is a NetGalley so it doesn't look like I can search the text, but I'll keep my eye out for the insect words. It works for millions of bugs on the author name at least.

Happy reading!

message 44: by Sarah (new)

It looks like we have the most options for ‘legs’ so I just wouldn’t do that one. Just pick one of them and then we can move it if needed :)
