Read-A-Thon #1: Team Lucky Charms
Sorry for putting two Sarahs on your team 😣 I wanted the time zones to be close! Y'all just figure out how to differentiate!
Hello everyone! Excited to get started :)
So this is quite a bit different than the previous RAT I did and I'm trying to get my bearings, lol. It looks like the first thing we need to do is pick a level to work on-I'm only partway through a book right now so it will carry over into tomorrow (will have at least 100 pages left, to qualify), and I think it would fit prompts for Big Cat or Dinosaur, and possibly Insect, if I'm understanding the rules correctly. So I vote for starting with one of those :)
eta: could someone check that I'm understanding correctly-if we were working on Big Cat, could I use Subhuman by Michael McBride for 3. fastest mammal, because the author's initials are M, M and there's two m's in mammal? Or am I looking at this wrong?

ZeeJane, that would work for author's initials, yes! It would also work for title, because every title word (in this case, there's only one title word) begins with S, and there is an S in "fastest mammal".
A book like A Game of Thrones would need a word/phrase that had A, G, O, and T in it.

Yes, that's d work. I asked about same initials because I'm reading a book by Laura Lam (and fortunately there are lots of double Ls).
For anyone reading on Kindle, the search the text feature will be really useful for finding those words. I'm going to search Goldilocks once I finish work to see where else it fits.

Yay, welcome to the 'thon!
Great, think I have a good understanding of what the rules are now :) So my current book/what I'll be reading tomorrow would work for all the categories, so whatever everyone else wants to start with is good with me!

Oh no! You're right Ellie! 😬 Ignore what I just said about the title letters... I forgot that we changed the rules before posting.

Super excited for read-a-thon! My hold for The Testaments just came in so I will be starting with this book and also listening to The Source of Self-Regard: Selected Essays, Speeches, and Meditations with well over a 100 pages left to qualify. I think these would work with any level.

Hi Team!!
I'm really excited for this read-a-thon. I've been doing better with my reading so far this year but I want to catch up with my goals a bit.
I'm about 70 pages into The Whisper Man so I'm hoping to finish it either tomorrow or Sunday. I can go through and look at where it counts once I'm off work later today :)

I will for sure be finishing A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin this week. It's my kindle book for bedtime and I have around 300 pages to go. I just had to laugh when I looked at the categories and realized how many letters are in my title/authors name LOL. Excellent. I am quite sure it will work for Insects though because someones legs get chopped off every hundred pages or so ;-)
I also have a huge stack of library books here and more coming in tomorrow, plus a large amount to choose from on my plans.
Lets do this!! Have fun everyone :-)

Do we as a group decide the order we are reading in and they have to be completed in that order?
Right now I have The World Without Us by Alan Weisman which would probably qualify for puppy and insect, Whiskey in a Teacup: What Growing Up in the South Taught Me About Life, Love, & Baking Biscuits by Reese Witherspoon which again will probably work for puppy and insect.
Johanna, your group should pick which level they want to tackle first, but within that level, you can read for the words/phrases in any order, and you don't have to claim the word/phrase before you read the book.

Looks like most of us have checked in-should we go ahead and pick a category so we can start narrowing down the prompts? Laura, since you're the team leader do you want the honor of picking? :)

Books out from the library that I need to get done this week:
Sadie by Courtney Summers
Home and The Night Masquerade by Nnedi Okorafor
and
Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs? Big Questions from Tiny Mortals About Death by Caitlin Doughty
Covers:

Doesn't matter to me what order I read my library books in and they're all quick reads, so I'll probably get a few done this weekend. Let me know if any fit our chosen category better than others and I'll start there.

I'm currently reading The Handmaid's Tale and Zorro.... I add both books in the spreadsheet where I think fit in.

Re-read this, and I'm confused lol. What do you mean for title-I don't see a spell out title option for the rules?
How does the bolded fit into one of these? (using my original example of Subhuman by Michael McBride )
1: Both of the author's initials are in the word/phrase
2: The word/phrase is in the title
3: The cover depicts something related to the word/phrase
4: The word/phrase is written exactly or acted out within the book

I misspoke about the title, ZeeJane. Just ignore my title thing... we changed the rules before posting and I forgot 🤦🏻♀️
Subhuman would fit with the author's initials, and of course, if any of the items were in the text.

Ok so you will need to be logged in in order to keep it in your sheets app, but if you have a gmail, the program is free.
You will add your pages under your name on the first tab. If you click in the cell, it should pop up with a box that says "Enter text or formula" and when you click on that box, the keyboard for you to type into the cells should pop up.
When you're done typing, hit the check mark in the upper left corner to clear away the box. You should then see the tabs at the bottom... clicking on those tabs should allow you to see the prompts for each level.
Please let me know if you have any other questions!

I'm not sure because I usually just access Goodreads and the spreadsheet on my laptop (I hate the app for this reason!)
I'm not sure how to fix it, but if you're still having trouble accessing the spreadsheet, you could just post your information here (books you're reading and what it fits) and your team captain can input the information for you.

Looking at the spreadsheet so far, it seems like “Insects” might be a good place to start.
What does everyone think?
What does everyone think?

It took me about three times reading the directions but I think I get it now. I'm currently reading Hidden Bodies. I'm thinking of also reading The Silent Wife and maybe The Red Badge of Courage.

Happy reading!

I'm currently reading The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, and Topics of Conversation by Miranda Popkey

It looks like we have the most options for ‘legs’ so I just wouldn’t do that one. Just pick one of them and then we can move it if needed :)

Just finished my first book, we have two spots completed for our first category already :)

The rules can be found at this thread.
Your team should begin by choosing which level they will tackle first! You must complete the level you chose before moving on to the other levels.
For each word/phrase in a level, you must fill it in one of four ways:
1: Both of the author's initials are in the word/phrase
2: The word/phrase is in the title
3: The cover depicts something related to the word/phrase
4: The word/phrase is written exactly or acted out within the book
The words/phrases are:
Big Cat Level
1. Sahara desert
2. pride
3. fastest mammal
4. kittens
5. whisker
6. tigers and panthers
7. rescue
8. The Lion King
9. roar
10. Shere Khan
Puppy Level
1. dog breed
2. animal shelter
3. labrador
4. lick your face
5. sit and stay
6. tennis ball
7. who's a good boy?
8. Snoopy
9. let's play fetch
10. fluffy
Dinosaur Level
1. carnivore
2. extinct
3. munching on leaves
4. stomp
5. Jurassic Park
6. triceratops
7. ancestors to birds
8. roaming the land
9. t-rex
10. ancient predators
Insect Level
1. spider web
2. creepy crawling
3. legs
4. thorax
5. millions of bugs
6. ants
7. grasshoppers
8. many species
9. springtime
10. don't step on them!
Don't forget to track your pages read each day! This can earn you Wild Cards to knock out those tricky words.
Here is a link to your group spreadsheet, where you can track and plan: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
Happy reading!
Reminder: The Read-A-Thon does not begin until you wake up on Saturday. Use this time to plan your books and start strategizing!
