No. Sue always struck me as overly complex and thus too high maintenance, Other Goodreads friends have disliked Sue because she was not good to or for Jude, But then I picture Kate Winslet as Sue and I get the attraction.

Sue's personality contributes to the tragic atmosphere he desires for this story he is telling. Jude's path can't be too easy and simple in this book. Hardy also seems to like to create flawed complex characters as heroines, such as the wonderful Eustacia Vye.
