My first Toni Morrison book; it will not be the last. Wonderful, vibrant text. Great characters. Story of awakening and journey of self discovery, set among US racial tensions and history. Filled with symbolism, biblical references and sprinkled with characters from the Odyssey.

Sandy B (sbenemer) | 161 comments It’s been decades since I read Song of Solomon but remember that I enjoyed it, probably more than her most famous novel, Beloved.

If you’re interested in black literary fiction, my personal favorite is Zora Neale Hurston’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God”, set in the 30’s. It’s less magical realism than some of Toni Morrison’s books. Just a very compelling story by a talented writer who died a pauper (in the town adjacent to where I grew up) but who thankfully was rediscovered posthumously around the 1970’s.
