Back in the late '80s, Granada TV decided to do the Sherlock Holmes stories,keeping them as faithful to the tales as possible. The series starred Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes and David Burke (for the 1st year) and Edward Hardwick as Watson.
Unfortunately, Brett's health impacted a lot of the later years of the series, and the efforts to turn some of the short stories into full-length TV movies didn't work well, but the first couple years were great examples of how to adapt a story and keep it faithful to the reading experience.

I loved the Sherlock Holmes series. Jeremy Brett was great.

The Jeremy Brett series was great, but the way they updated the stories to the modern day was pretty genius too.
