Hello all, Ides of March and it is time to vote for our May book. We will be choosing from Malroux to Meyer authors. Please peruse the list of choices, give us your comments, and cast your votes. Voting is from 15 through 23 and announce winners of popular vote and random selection on March 24.

Everyone gets 1 free vote. You can use an additional 4 points if you have participation points to use. These start over in January so if you haven't started a new one for 2020 you might want to do that. You can vote for 1 or 5 books depending on number of participation points and how you wish to distribute those. Send a PM to the bookshelf personality or me with your votes. Just saying what you want here in the topic will not get your vote counted.

I've read 15 of these. I am most interested in
Saturday
Child in Time
A Heart So White
Schooling

message 3: by Pip (new)

Pip | 1822 comments I have read 16. I have recently read and enjoyed Cakes and Ale, so I will vote for another Somerset Maugham.

message 4: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 884 comments The Razor's Edge is on my list for this year.

message 5: by Pip (new)

Pip | 1822 comments That is what I have voted for.

message 6: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2174 comments I have read 11 and I would go for The Razor's Edge or any of the McEwan other than Atonement or Saturday, which I have read, so a Child in Time would work for me.

message 7: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1679 comments I've got 21 here that are <600 pages that I haven't read: so that's pretty good! I have read Razor's edge though, so I'll vote for something else.

Out of the ones I haven't read, I'd be most interested in:
- Viper's Tangle (audible)
- A girl is a Half Formed Thing (audible)
-Blood Meridian (rb and audible)
-All the Pretty Horses (audible)
-Amercan Rust (audible)
-Heart of Redness
-The Daughter
-Time of Silence
- A Heart so White
-Her Privates We

message 8: by Diane (new)

Diane | 2044 comments I've read 32, which is actually lower than usual. I am most interested in:

The Child in Time
A Heart So White
Schooling
The Razor's Edge
Her Privates We
American Rust
Vanishing Point
That They May Face the Rising Sun
Saturday
Don't Move

From Diane's list, I would be willing to read
The Child in Time
A Heart So White
Schooling
The Razor's Edge
Saturday

From Amanda's list
- A Heart so White

From Pip and Gail
The Razor's Edge

Thus far Razor's Edge is leading for my support with 3 people wanting that one,
Second place for me goes to A Heart so White.

message 10: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1679 comments Well, I can vote for A Heart so White since a couple other people want that one too.

message 11: by Tatjana (new)

Tatjana JP | 317 comments Then I’ll go for A Heart so White also.

message 12: by Pip (new)

Pip | 1822 comments I gave A Heart So White 5 stars. It is one of my favourite books.

George P. | 725 comments I am light on the "M" s it seems, have only read seven of these, usually I've read about a quarter.
I already have a copy of McGahern's That They May Face the Rising Sun, and Matesis' The Daughter and I also have the Mankell on my Kindle, so one of them would be great .

I'd like to read A Heart so White, it's in my to-read list, and could normally get it from the university library but they're only allowing students and faculty in there now. Used paperbacks are as low as $5 or 6 though.

I read The Razor's Edge decades ago, would do a reread if chosen as I have a copy of that also, in a six novel collection (of which I've read 5), so I will probably vote for that since others would like to read it also and I think I liked it a lot- "you can't go wrong with a Maugham".

The Marai and Mauriac are in my to-read list but would have to buy them unless the libraries reopen.

Valerie Brown | 884 comments I did vote for The Razor's Edge

The winner of the popular vote is The Razor's Edge by W. Somerset Maugham. I will announce randomizer choice when I hear. Thanks for voting. It was a close one until the end.

The randomizer chose 31. The Cement Garden by Ian McEwan. This book has never been a BOTM as far as I know so I think it is eligible.

I notice the Kindle of Cement Garden is only $2.99, a nice price.
I'll do a 2nd reading of Razor's Edge; I'm also tempted to order a copy of A Heart So White for the buddy read, but I need to read the books I have from the library (Promise at Dawn and Pather Panchali).

message 28: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Haider (jessicahaider) | 124 comments I read Razor's Edge a few years ago for a book club so I will read Cement Garden and a may join in on the buddy read.

ANNOUNCEMENT: The rule that you must finish BOTM during the month (5 days give or take) is suspended for now because of COVID-19. You may have up to the end of the year to finish any books that are chosen during the time that our libraries are closed to us.

message 30: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2174 comments Wonderful! I have noticed that even the bookstores and amazon are saying book deliveries are taking longer and longer because compared to masks and toilet paper they are not a priority. Also, it is strange, but many books are still not available as ebooks.

Kelly_Hunsaker_reads ... | 902 comments That is great news. Thank you Kristel!
