Daniel | 20 comments Clarice Lispector's The Complete Stories is being published by New Directions in August, and I'm very excited for it already. I've read a few of her stories that were published in The Paris Review a few years ago, but I have no idea what her novels are like. Any tips for a beginner?

message 2: by Praj (new)

Praj I'll be starting my Lispector completion book list come Jan'2015. The first on my list The Passion According to G.H..

Erik F. | 29 comments I wish I could offer more help, but I've read only The Hour of the Star. It's short enough to read in one sitting, but it creates a lasting impact. It may be a good introduction to her other works.

Passion According to G.H. is what I always recommend to those first starting out with Lispector's work - and I've come across several others just recently who have also recommended that same text themselves.

Paul | 34 comments Thank you for this! Adding her. I will be saying this a lot. My reading, until recently, mostly consisted of dead authors who were mostly all European men.

Garima | 75 comments I was blown away by the only Lispector I have read so far- Near to the Wild Heart

Ídem here Garima, I am still struggling to grasp Lispector's eternity in succession of impressionistic thoughts that shape identity. Can't recommend that book highly enough!

Traveller (moontravlr) | 736 comments Another Lispector wannabe here, but also not sure where to start...

message 9: by Luke (new)

Luke (korrick) Starting with The Hour of the Star worked out well enough for me. I also have A Breath of Life if anyone wants a reading partner for that one.

message 10: by Steve (new)

Steve Lispector is definitely on my horizon for 2015.

Heh, I call them Dead White Men. :)

message 12: by Traveller (new)

Traveller (moontravlr) | 736 comments I have Passion According to G.H. and A Breath of Life and near to the Wild Heart and maybe one or 2 more.

So, being a Lispector newbie, I'd be prepared to jump on a wagon - maybe Passion?

message 13: by Daniel (new)

Daniel | 20 comments Thanks everyone, I've decided to start with Passion According to G.H. I'll probably start in the next month of two, if anyone is interested in joining me.

message 14: by Traveller (new)

Traveller (moontravlr) | 736 comments I could do late Feb, perhaps.

message 15: by Kris (new)

Kris (krisrabberman) She's on my list -- Passion... in late Feb would work for me.

message 16: by Daniel (new)

Daniel | 20 comments Late Feb works for me as well! Great!

Traveller (moontravlr) | 736 comments Oops, I think I've overloaded my Jan/Feb schedule a bit... er.. would you guys mind moving it on slightly to March? :P

message 18: by Daniel (new)

Daniel | 20 comments March would be fine!

message 19: by Traveller (last edited Dec 24, 2014 09:06AM) (new)

Traveller (moontravlr) | 736 comments If that's okay with Kris and other interested parties, I could add it for March, then. :)

message 20: by Kris (new)

Kris (krisrabberman) March is good for me, too.

message 21: by Traveller (new)

Traveller (moontravlr) | 736 comments Link to the thread for discussion of The Passion According to G.H. : https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Added to the schedule for March.

Bjorn | 1 comments Good, long article about Lispector in the New Yorker:

http://www.newyorker.com/books/page-t...

This is a record of woman’s entire life, written over the course of a woman’s entire life. As such, it seems to be the first such total record written in fiction, in any language.

Paul | 34 comments Starting The Foreign Legion. So far, it's great!!!

message 24: by Paul (new)

Paul | 34 comments She's shaping up to be one of the best writers I've read in any sex. A love affair has been born.

message 25: by Traveller (new)

Traveller (moontravlr) | 736 comments Still want to read at least The Passion sometime.....

message 26: by Paul (new)

Paul | 34 comments I want to thanks this group for introducing me to, now, one of my favorite writers. I've written a review on The Foreign Legion. It's basically me fawning over her supreme intellect & literary craftsmanship.

Ashianeis (Anna Louise Grace) | 1 comments This update is really useful, thanks :)
