You don't have to answer all the categories. Just the ones that are applicable. If you think of other categories, feel free to add them.

Susan (the other Susan) (theothersusan) | 259 comments Looking back, I seem not to have been in a very romantic mood in 2014. Read a lot of horror fiction! :-) and thrillers. What does that say about my post-menopausal life?

Best historical romance: For My Lady's Heart by Laura Kinsale. So happy to have discovered a new appreciation for an author I haven't read in ages, thanks to this exquisitely performed audiobook. Some frustration toward the end with a Big Misunderstanding, but there was a powerful resolution and all the Knights-in-Shining Armor a romantic could ask for.

Best non-romance: The Goldfinch. So painful to read, such a vivid depiction of grief and loss, I almost DNFed it half a dozen times. Thank goodness I didn't. The ending was a splendid, fulfilling reward for everything readers are asked to endure to get there. Perfect illustration of how light is made more meaningful by darkness.

Best romantic suspense: A re-read of Sandra Brown's Lethal.

Best unexpected love: Has to be Princess Melanthe falling for Ruck, her Green Knight. Melanthe comes across initially as a cold, heartless user, but when we learn her backstory we know it's a facade she's created to survive the turmoil that has surrounded her since she was married at age 12 to a man 30 years older; Melanthe has suffered so much loss at the hands of men who claim to love her, she plans never to feel anything except a thinly veiled contempt. Ruck is her opposite, a man who wears his heart on his sleeve, lives for honor, and has an idealized view of women that sets him up for disillusionment. This is not the kind of romantic pairing that typically appeals to me; he's a Beta hero sworn to chastity, and she's more than a match for him in many ways. I was so entranced by the storytelling, I was probably as surprised as the h/h when their love story started to matter to me!

Best chemistry: Nick and Amy in Gone Girl. LOL! These two are made for each other.

Susan (the other Susan) (theothersusan) | 259 comments New categories:

Putting-the-Rot-in-Erotica, the book with the worst written sex scenes. For me, it was Their Virgin Concubine. I laughed out loud at some of those "hot" scenes. It didn't help that the heroine, a highly educated businesswoman, refers to her "pink part."

Worst sentence: "She walked to the shower with shaking hands." :-D From the book above. Love that word-picture! It made me exhale Diet Coke through my sinuses.
