The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri

Lisa (lisarosenbergsachs) | 124 comments I am about a third of the way through it and think that it's beautifully written so far.

Yes, beautiful prose and haunting characters.

La Tonya Jordan | 258 comments In the silent book club everyone brings their own book or E-reader and reads together quietly for an hour, then we all nerd out about books afterward.

We kick off the meeting with a quick round of introductions where everyone says their name and a little about what they're reading. We love hearing about what people are reading (often in their other book clubs).

Lisa (lisarosenbergsachs) | 124 comments That sounds interesting. I might tune into it.

Lisa (lisarosenbergsachs) | 124 comments I finished reading The Beekeeper of Aleppo last night. This is the saddest book that I have read in quite a while. It really affected me. This time that we're living through right now is so tragic that I recommend putting off reading this book until our current plague has been vanquished.

I love Lefteri's use of language and thought the characters were very well developed. My only criticism of the book was that the nonlinear way she told the story - which is the way memory actually works - make the book somewhat difficult to follow. I kept wishing she would tell us what caused Afra to be blinded and what had killed Sami. We don't find out until the end of the book. I felt she could have told us a bit sooner. Otherwise, the book was perfect.

Shomeret | 26 comments Although very sad things happen in the book, I feel it ended on an optimistic note. I felt inspired by these immigrants on the verge of getting where they needed to be which would lead to their integration in their new country and psychological improvement for both of them.

Lisa (lisarosenbergsachs) | 124 comments Yes, the ending was somewhat hopeful, but until we got to the end the book filled me with sadness. That just illustrates how effective the writer is.

aPriL does feral sometimes (cheshirescratch) I am starting this today. It is very elegiac.

aPriL does feral sometimes (cheshirescratch) What a good book. I am glad the club selected it or I might not have picked it up.
