April 1, 2020 - June 30, 2020
World War Two began in 1939 with Germany's invasion of Poland, and lasted until the Japanese surrender in September of 1945. In the course of six years, fighting took place on land, sea, and in the air, and countries all over the world were pulled into the conflict.
The second world war was fought on two fronts: the European and the Pacific. In Europe, fighting was largely between Great Britain, France, and Russia on one side, and Germany and Italy on the other. Much of the fighting occurred in the skies over Great Britain, and on mainland Europe and northern Africa.
In the Pacific, fighting was heavily concentrated on a series of islands including the Philippines. Compared to the European front, the battles here were long, drawn-out affairs with a high rate of casualty.

Tasks
1. The Battle of France
Also known as the Fall of France, the battle resulted in Germany's takeover of France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. Although France had declared war on Germany in September of 1939, French troops were unable to make much headway against the Germans. The following spring, Germany launched a major offensive, and defeated Allied forces in six weeks, halting all Allied land operations on the Western Front until the Normandy landings four years later. France was split in two, with half the country being ruled by Germany, and the other by a provisional French government. Although this defeat meant the official end of French military involvement, many French resistance movements arose in the next few years.
✱ Read a book that takes place in France, Belgium, or Luxembourg OR
✱ Read a book with a 6 in the page count OR
✱ Read a book whose title starts with a letter in FALL OF FRANCE
2. The Battle of Britain
Emboldened by their success on the Western Front, Germany had plans to invade Britain. Knowing that an attack from the sea would be difficult, air strikes were ordered on Great Britain in order to debilitate the country and make an attack easier. The battle lasted from July to October of 1940, with the Royal Air Force defending against attacks by the German Luftwaffe. Also at this time, and extending past the end of the battle, German forces heavily bombed Great Britain in an attempt to disrupt infrastructure - this was known as the Blitz.
✱ Read a book that takes place in Great Britain OR
✱ Read a book originally published in July or October OR
✱ Read a book whose title starts with a letter in BLITZ
3. The Battle of Stalingrad
The largest and bloodiest battle in the history of warfare, Stalingrad involved nearly 2.2 million military personnel. From August 1942 to April 1943, Germany and its allies fought to gain control of the Soviet city of Stalingrad. The Luftwaffe was used to support the attack, bombing the city to ruins in places. Reinforcements were called on both sides, and by mid-November, Axis powers had pushed the Soviets out of the city. However, the Soviet army launched a counter-attack, surrounding the Axis army so they could not retreat. By February, the Axis army had run so low on supplies that they surrendered, ending the battle.
✱ Read a book that takes place in Russia OR
✱ Read one of the longest books on your TBR OR
✱ Read a book whose title starts with a letter in STALINGRAD
4. The Battle of Normandy
More commonly referred to as "D-Day", the landings on Normandy Beach in France on June 6, 1944, was one of the largest amphibious assaults of World War Two. Over a dozen countries on the Allied side contributed to the fighting force tasked to overtake the beach and get a foothold on German-held France. 160,000 troops crossed the English Channel on June 6th, with more following at later dates. The Allied forces worked to regain territory lost to the Germans. By August 15th, the Allies had pushed the Germans back to Paris, liberating the city. The Battle of Normandy ending a short while later, when the Germans were pushed back to the Seine River.
✱ Read a book that takes place in a country that is part of the British Commonwealth OR
✱ Read a book with more than 160,000 ratings on Goodreads OR
✱ Read a book whose title starts with a letter in NORMANDY
5. The Battle of the Bulge
Also known as the Ardennes Counteroffensive, this was Germany's last major campaign on the Western Front, located in the Ardennes Forest of Belguim. Germans attacked a weakly defended section of the Allied line in December 1944. Allies stretched their troops to hold the line and block German supply routes. The offensive was broken by December 27th, but the battle continued for another month before the Allied line could be fully restored. It was the bloodiest battle American forces faced in the course of the war, and the third-bloodiest battle in American history.
✱ Read a book that takes place in a forest OR
✱ Read a book that is #3 on your TBR or #3 of a series OR
✱ Read a book whose title starts with a letter in ARDENNES
6. Attack on Pearl Harbor
On December 7, 1941, Japanese forces launched a preemptive military strike against the United States. Anticipating that the United States would soon join the war, Japan sent 353 aircraft, in two waves, to bomb the Hawaiian port of Honolulu, intending to debilitate the United States Naval Fleet. All eight of the U.S. Navy battleships in port were damaged by Japanese bombers, and four sank. Many U.S. aircraft were also destroyed, but Japanese losses were light. The next day, Japan and the United States declared war on each other.
✱ Read a book that takes place in Hawaii OR
✱ Read a book with a 3 and a 5 in the total page count OR
✱ Read a book whose title starts with a letter in PEARL HARBOR
7. The Battle of the Philippine Sea
The largest battle between aircraft carriers took place on the 19th and 20th of June, 1944. The United States faced off against the Japanese in an attempt to limit Japan's ability to launch attacks from aircraft carriers. The United States managed to sink three of Japan's carriers, damaged six other ships, and destroyed a large number of aircraft. The battle was viewed as a missed opportunity for America to completely destroy the Japanese fleet, but despite their failure to do so, Japan never fully recovered from the losses it sustained.
✱ Read a book that takes place on or by the sea OR
✱ Read a book with a boat or ship on the cover OR
✱ Read a book whose title starts with a letter in PHILIPPINE
8. The Battle of Midway
In June of 1942, six months after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, Japan carried out plans to attack the tiny island of Midway, far to the northwest of Hawaii. Because of its distance from Hawaii, it was outside the range of American aircraft stationed on Hawaii. However, American cryptographers were able to determine the place and time of the attack, giving American forces an opportunity to plan, and ultimately to inflict devastating damage on Japanese forces. Along with the Guadalcanal campaign, it is considered one of the turning points in the Pacific War.
✱ Read a book that takes place on an island OR
✱ Read a book that is considered very significant (bestseller, classic, etc.) OR
✱ Read a book whose title starts with a letter in MIDWAY
9. The Battle of Leyte Gulf
Fought in the waters of the Philippine islands in October 1944, American and Australian forces teamed up to isolate Japan from the countries it had occupied in Southeast Asia. Japan had fewer battleships and carriers at this point than the entire combined Allied forces. The battle of Leyte Gulf was comprised of four main engagements in the surrounding area. It was the first battle in which the Japanese carried out kamikaze attacks, and the last naval battle between battleships in history.
✱ Read a book that takes place in Australia OR
✱ Read a book written by two authors OR
✱ Read a book whose title starts with a letter in LEYTE
10. The Battle of Iwo Jima
In five weeks lasting from February to March 1945, American Marine and Navy forces landed on the island of Iwo Jima, eventually capturing it. Japanese positions on the island were heavily fortified and Americans relied on air support to aid them in overtaking the island. Both sides sustained heavy losses, but it was apparent from the beginning - due to America's superiority in number and weapons, as well as air support - that American forces would win the battle. However, the strategic value of the island was put into question following the heavy losses sustained, as the island could not be used as a staging base for American forces. The image of the American flag being raised at Iwo Jima is one of the most iconic and recognizable images to come out of the war.
