"Well, if those screams were human, there are probably only about twenty of us left." Collin said, running faster to the house. Darcy nods and they reached the house. "Please be unlocked." Darcy muttered. It was locked, of course, and they went to the back door, which was unlocked, but blood-splattered. "Someone's been here, or SOMETHING has been here." Said Darcy.
"And it looks like they have had a snack. Is it safe here?" Collin asked.
"Should be." Darcy mumbled.
"But how are we going to get-" but Collin dint finish his sentence because Darcy had backed up and was running full speed towards the door, then he turned and slammed his shoulder into the door, and it popped open.
"That was unlocked..." Collin said, narrowing his eyes. "You just ruined some of the little protection we had." Darcy sighed and rubbed his head. "I'm sorry. We can barricade it once we search the house, make sure there's not any creatures in there." Darcy said, stepping inside. Collin followed him.
The inside of the house was duty and dingy. There was a plain wooden table in front of them with four blue plates and cups on them. They walked through the doors that where leading into the living room. A sudden strong smell of rotting and formaldehyde smacked them in the face, and there laying I the dust and dirt were four rotting bodies
"Don't touch them!" Collin said as Darcy reached down to see if they were dead-alive or just dead. "We need to destroy the brain." Darcy said, standing up. Collin tried to breathe through his mouth; the smell was terrible.
"You can do that." Collin sad plugging his nose.
"Fine, hand me that fire iron," Darcy said nodding towards the fireplace,"
Collin handed it to him and Darcy held it in both of his hands. Darcy positioned the fire iron over one of the dead people's heads and looked away, showing the sharp end of it deep into the brain. He stabbed it again, more confidently this time. Cold blood splattered on the wooden floors. "Yuck." Darcy said, moving on to the next dead person. Collin had to leave after he had done the young boy, he left heaving and threw up in the kitchen.
"Oh great! Were going to be staying here for a while the least you could do is go outside and do that!" Darcy snapped.
"Sorry!" Collin screamed back. "Shut up!" Darcy hissed. "They are attracted to noise, remember! You don't want a bunch of creatures eating up your face, now do you, hm?" he snaps. Collin wipes his mouth on a towel near the sink. "We need to search the cabinets. There could be food." Collin said, ignoring the nasty look Darcy sent him.
Becca They had rummaged through all of the cabinets and only found four cans of beef stew.
"Great!" Collin yelled and Darcy glare at him and Collin flew I had up to his mouth.
"Im going to need to train you, and soon, before you get us killed." Darcy whispered. Collin glared at Darcy. "I'm trained enough... I've been in this a hell of a lot longer than you have." he said. Darcy looked up at Collin. "Three years is a hell of a lot longer? Let me tell you something, smart ass. I don't accept this kind of attitude. I've told you over and over: age doesn't matter!"
"If were talking about an apocalyptic war and were living every single day in terror killing those Things, yes, yes it does." Darcy said.
Collin glared at him.
"What are we going to do? We have very little food and little shelter, were screwed."
Natalie "I can always count on you to think on the bright side of things." Collin said to Darcy sarcastically. Darcy sighed. "Look, mate. We're going to need to get along. Let's start with this: Tell me what you think your name is." Darcy said, offering kindness. Collin looked at the floor. "I think that my name is Collin. And I think that yours is Darcy." Darcy nodded. "Darcy. Collin. I like that." he said, his British accent clutching his words. "I thought of it when you were trying to give me a heart attach running." Collin said staring at the floor. Darcy smiled a half-smile. "Darcy means dark. I like it." Collin grinned. He had picked up information from his mother when she was still alive. She had said that she would not have a boy who did not know how to read, write, or talk.
"Yes, and Collin means triumphant, I thought it fit." Collin smiled at the ground. And suddenly there was a loud thump, and crash, then... Screams.

Chapter Three:
"Hello?" yelled Darcy. The noise came from upstairs. "Is anyone there?" another scream. "Leave me alone! I know you're... You're one of them! Go away!" the voice sobs.
"Listen, we can help you, were not one, please." Darcy pleaded.
"Wow that's the nicest I've seen you since I've met you." Collin mumbled. Darcy glared at him.
"We're coming up there!" Collin called up. "NO! Leave me alone!" sobbed the voice.
"What are we going to do?" Collin asked.
"Where going up there." He began to go up the stairs.
"No!" Collin grabbed his arm.
"Give her some space, she sounds broken up." They could the girl sobbing. Darcy clenched his teeth.
"Fine." He stepped off the first step.
"What's your name?" Collin Yelled up the stairs.
The voice sobbed, "As if you care! You're just here to eat me!" She was in rough shape. "We're only here to help, little girl!" Darcy called up, disgusted. "She's obviously not a little girl, Darcy." Collin said through gritted teeth.
"And it looks like they have had a snack. Is it safe here?" Collin asked.

Darcy glares at him, but his face softens as he hears the girl's wails and sobs. "We have to help her." He says to Collin.
(Collin is the main character, and Darcy is really aggressive) Collin sighs. "We're coming up there!" he called up to the girl, who's sobs had softened. The girl did not answer and Collin walked up the stairs, leaving a scowling Darcy to follow him.
(Okay I read it all but I wasn't quite sure how to personify them. I think I got it now.) There is only one door at the top of the stairs. Collin tried the knob but had no luck. "Did you honestly think that it would be unlocked?" Darcy irritably askes. He started to slam his shoulder against the door to bust it open.
The girls sobs become louder. "See what you've done?" Darcy sneered. "Shut up, Darcy! I thought we were trying to get along!" shouted Collin. Collin pounded on the door with his body. It didn't budge at first, but it fell open after a couple of attempts. Collin walked into the upstairs slowly, looking around for the girl. The sobs had quieted.
She was sitting against the wall at the far side of the room. She was shaking and covered in blood. Collin noticed the room was trashed and there was a putrid smell in the air.
"I told you to stay away!" she sniffed. She looked around Collin's age, maybe a year younger. "We're not here to hurt you." Collin said, walking closer to the girl. The girl wiped a tear from her cheek. "P-please don't hurt me." she said quietly, obviously terrified. Collin walked to the girl. "Can you tell me your name?" he asked her. "I-I think...I think my name is Alison." the girl said, who now had a name. "I'm Collin, and this is Darcy." he said, gesturing to Darcy. The girl is bloody and there are cuts along her wrists. "Alison!" Collin said, surprised. "What?" she asked, frowning. Collin decided to not tell her. She was obviously miserable. "Nothing. How long have you gone without eating?" he asked, examining her frail body. She shrugged. "I've lost count. The stores are all raided in the city, the crops are wilted in the country. There isn't any food left for me to eat." she said, wiping another tear from her cheek. "We'll find you some food to eat." Collin exchanged a look with Darcy. "We need to heat her up some of that beef stew." Collin said, looking back at Alison. Darcy nodded. "I'll see if I can light the stove." he said, walking down the stairs. Collin looked back at Alison. "You will be able to eat soon, warm food or not." he said. Alison shivered. "How long has this gone on?" she asked quietly. "It's been around ever since I was a couple of months old. My friend Kyle...he found me...he...er..he.." Collin couldn't tell Alison about what happened. It was in the past, and Collin needed to focus on the future.
Collin's mind flashed back to when he saw his friend thrashing in his seat belt, dead. Kyle couldn't bear to think of it. He glanced over to look at Alison and saw she had a worried look on her face. She really was beautiful. Collin smiled a bit and eventually Alison's worried look went away.
Darcy came back up a few minutes later, carrying a chipped bowl full of stew. "Thanks, Darcy." Collin said, taking the bowl and handing it to Alison. "Thank you." she whispered to Collin. Alison had green eyes, that mesmerized Collin. Her dirty-blond hair was pulled back into a ponytail, the elastic's color faded.
Alison brought the bowl to her mouth. "Were there any spoons?" Collin asked Darcy. He shook his head. "No. I looked, but I couldn't find any." he gestured at Alison. "Maybe she took them?" he asked, trying to sound innocent. Collin glared at him. "Of course she didn't. She didn't have anything to eat! Why would she need spoons?" Collin asked harshly. He was beginning to think that he liked Alison- a lot. He had just met her, but he could sense her personality, strong and yet delicate. Collin could hardly resist himself from reaching down and touching her cheek that was spotted with freckles.
Darcy raised his eyebrows at Collin, as if saying, I know you like her. Collin glared at Darcy, but he knew that Darcy was right.
Alison finished her soup and handed Collin the bowl, who handed it to Darcy, who scowled, but turned to go downstairs.

"I won't play maid forever!" Darcy called, as he stomped his way back down the stairs. Collin turned back to Allison, her eyes still puffy from crying. In the nicest voice he had, Collin asked her how long she had been there, how long she's been alone.
"I think maybe a day or to." she said with a hiccup from crying. Collin grabbed her hand and ran his thumb over the back of it.
Alison pulled back, out of instinct. Collin blushed and muttered, "Sorry." Alison blushed. "It's okay... What did you say your name was?" she asked him. Collin's face turned a bright red. "Collin." he said.
Alison smiled. God, she had the prettiest smile. "I like Alison, too." Collin blurted out. He turned even redder. Alison laughed. "Thank you. Its a wonder I still remember my name. I was over in London when this all happened. London was the last to be hit... I don't know if my parents are still alive." her smile disappears. "My parents have been gone a long time." Collin said. "How old are you?" he asked her. She shrugged. "I'm eighteen." she said. "I'm nineteen." Collin smiled. "Darcy is sixteen." he said. Alison laughed. "I thought he was older than me." she smiled.
"He's got that macho personality so its hard to tell," Collin said laughing, just as Darcy walked back into the room. "What's so funny?" he asked, leaning against the wall. Obviously confused about all the laughter. Collin chuckled at him. "I don't think you would like the joke," he told Darcy. "You don't know. I like jokes." Darcy said, which only made Collin and Alison laugh harder
Collin shakes his head and looks down.
"Are you blushing?" Darcy asked with a smirk.
"No!" Collin says, he looks up and he can feel the rushing of blood in his face, he looks at Darcy with pleading eyes. Darcy smirks and walks out.

Collin opened his mouth to speak, but before he could get a word out, Darcy burst back into the room, breathing heavy and an a panic in his eyes. "We have to move. Now."
Collin scrambled to his feet, and started towards the door, but stopped. Alison wasn't following them.
"I... I can't," she choked out, sobbing again. Darcy made a frustrated noise. "We don't have time for this! We need to be out of here, NOW!" he shouted.
As soon as they were out of the house she rooted her feet to the ground and sank to her knees. Collin stopped and tugged on her hand.
"Hurry up!" Darcy's scream was desperate. A high agonizing scream came from the hills. Darcy and Collin exchanged a look and then, they saw it.

Darcy ran to Alison and, with surprising strength, lifted her from the ground and ran as fast as he could, Collin following, anxious to get away from Them.
Allison was slumped in his arms, he had to keep hoisting him up to try and not drop her.
"Come on!" He said through clenched teeth.
"Come on!" He said through clenched teeth.
He could hear his thumping heart beat in his ear, he could also vaguely hear Darcy screaming his name, but it was too late.
He was already blacking out.

Chapter Four:
Collin awoke to screams. He couldn't remember anything. He looked around for Allison but didn't see her anywhere. Darcy came over to Collin, a finger over his lips. They were in the top of a tree. How Darcy managed to drag Collin up there he had no idea. "What happened? Where's Allison?" Collin asks, dizzy all of a sudden. Probably from hunger, he realized. When they were at the house, he hadn't eaten any of the stew. Only Allison did and Allison was nowhere to be seen. Where was she? Darcy shifted, uncomfortable. He sat on a branch about a foot higher than where Collin was sitting. "Where is she?" Collin demanded. Darcy opened his mouth to speak, but Collin spoke first. "How am I still alive? They were so close... I should be dead like-" he stops mid-sentence, his mouth gaping. "She's dead. She's one of them." Collin realizes. "You let her die. And you saved me." Collin says, tears spilling onto his cheeks. He didn't remember that what love was before Them, but he was sure he had felt love when he met Allison.

" Kyle, Kyle!" His screams were desperate. He could feel every heartbeat in the tips of his numb fingers. His clothes were heavy with water, the cold air slicing through him like knife. He looked around desperately, looking for Kyle. The ocean sprays him with icy cold water, making his already soaking body even colder. "Kyle!" he screamed louder, walking slowly up the beach, dragging his numb feet. "KYLE!!!" he screams, looking around, eyes wide.
Then he see's a lone car sitting in the parking lot, he slowly begins to walk towards it. It's like a gravitational force, beckoning him towards it, NO, daring him towards it.
He crosses the beach grass into the parking lot, calling Kyle. "Kyle!" he yells, coming closer to the lone car.
His heart beats rapidly, like the wings of a bird. NO, that's not his heart, its... a bird.
But its mid-winter, he thought.
The bird was beckoning him, to go towards the car.
He thinks back to when his heart had felt like a bird, fluttering inside him, wanting out. He did not remember what happened, but it did not go well. "Are you in there?" he yells to the car. The driver's door is open and something is sitting there. Something, not someone.
He stops, frozen. The bird looks back at him, suddenly he relizes that the birds eyes were black pits, nothingness. His screams were drowned out by the menacing noises the creature inside the car made.
No. No. It couldn't be. Kyle, the only one alive. The only one he had ever known... turned in to one of those... those things.
Becca The bird landed on the ground, it started to change. morph into a shape, a HUMAN form. It looked him dead in the eyes, black pits. Nothingness. No. No. There's two of them. How that one was a bird, he had no idea. Maybe he is hallucinating. It's not like he had eaten that day.
Finale, his brain registers the figure, Jessica. But, no.. I killed her. She's supposed to be dead! Something clicks in his head. Nothing dies completely. Not anymore.
Becca He knew what she was, even the thought of it made him cringe. Abandoned. "Jessica." he mumbled, the creature limping toward him. He took out his knife. "D-don't make me have to do this!" he yelled. The creature emerged. "I just.. I just want you to know..." he holds the knife closer. "I...I didn't mean to kill you. I swear...and I...I love you." the creature was only a foot away and he ran forward and stabbed the knife into its forehead, making sure that it does not come back. The creature crumpled to the floor the vanished. His knife came back torn it pieces and covered in inchor.
The creature lies there, unmoving, only the smallest twitch would scare him. He had to run. The creature in the car its seat belt on, so it wouldn't be able to move, but he could not bear to see Kyle as a creature.
His mind screamed for him to turn and run, but his body disobeyed. He stood there and took it all in, from rising from the water to seeing Kyle to killing Jessica.... again. It was silent for a moment, the silence was good, well needed. Then, without a moments hesitation, the creature that was Kyle quickly snacheted the seatbelt off of himself, not bothering to unbuckle it. His hands were no longer hands, they were disembodied, with long claws or talons putruding from them. The creature turned and stared at him for a moment the ran towards him. Within seconds it was black and the world around him morphed. Get away, get away, get away! his mind screamed at him. Spots of black darted across his vision, terror filled his body. Kyle was not Kyle. He was a creature of some sort, a creature that ate people. Dammit! he thought, he had dropped his knife and was now armless. His mind raced back to when he and Kyle were kids, Kyle just a few years older then him. He was his mentor, he had taught him how to fight. He had told him once that anything could be used as a weapon.
They were at a slow walking pace, he was backing away, they had done this till his feet found the sand again. He had remembered seeing a few sticks in the sand, mabey he could use those. NO! he thought his bracelet! he slowly looked down at his wrist, it was bloody, wait demons dinit bleed, it was his blood. He now saw that he had not beaten the demon, he had not risen out of the water and found this car. He was in his house and he was in his living room. It was cold, his throught hurt like her was yelling. Then it all came rushing back to him. Kyle had been bitten. Bitten by one of them. "K-kyle. Stop." he stuttered, backing away, stumbling and then falling. "RUN!" a voice screamed from behind him. He managed to push himself up and run for his life, silently thanking the voice as he saw that the creature collapsed right where he had been a few moments before.
His mind had registered the voice, it was familiar. The boy had taken out a knife.
"That's not going to work" I thought. He knew the face but it dint come back, he couldn't quite think of who it was.
"DO I know you?" he whispered, squinting his eyes. The boy nodded. "You knew me, but not well." The boy had put away the knife after he realized it wouldn't be enough. Kyle was strong.
"How old are you?" he had ment for it to sound like a question, but it came out squeaky.
"1,014" he said confidently.
He looked at the boy with puzziling eyes. The boy sighed. "We need to find a gun." the boy walked in front of him and he followed the boy. "What is that supposed to mean?" he asks. The boy glances back at him.
"well for one thing if you want to get out of her ALIVE, I would suggest finding a significant
weapon." the boy said matter-of-factly.
"I would like to know where the HELL we a goin to find a gun."
the boy grinned, "oh, you just wait"
He rolled his eyes and the boy continued walking. "We have to avoid parking lots. There are too many there." the boy said.
"Too many? DEMONS!" he eyes wide with shock.
"yes to many demons. "He hadn't noticed till now but the boys accent was British.
"I wouldn't exactly call them demons, though. They are more like flesh-eating creatures. You could call them demons, though." the boy said, his British accent obvious to him now.
" Well what do you and your people call them?"
" People, I wouldn't call them people there are only about twenty or thirty of us left." He said this with a smile on his face and laughter in his voice.
"I've been stuck in this kind of world my whole life, knowing that the population is going down every day." they boy said, now serious. "I have too. I know a lot more than you." he says. He was only a few years older than the boy; he was nineteen. "Listen up, smart one. I don't go by age anymore. Find a smart little boy? Keep him as an ally! Why not? So I really don't appreciate you acting like you're older than me by so much and therefore that makes you smarter!" the boy glares at him.
"Listen, if you want to get out of here ALIVE, I would suggest stop thinking that YOU know everything!" The boy had said.
"Fine. Where are we going anyway?" They were now walking on the edge of an abandoned road.
"Safety." the boy spit back.
End of Chapter One
Chapter Two:
When he awakens, the boy is pacing back and forth in the barn they found at the edge of the road. The dead bodies of the creatures are everywhere. "Finally." the boy muttered, walking over to him. "You can sleep through anything. I had to kill some of those damn creatures in here. I think it's safe for now." the boy said, twirling his knife. "We need to find a better shelter, though. This roof is not going to hold rain." the boy looks up at the barn's loft. "Haven't gone up there. Creatures are attracted to noise, so I'm pretty sure they aren't up there." the boy said, pointing at the loft. "It would be a good hiding spot, though, for dry weather." he nodded and sat up.
"Where do we go now?" When he got up he got a head rush and laid back down.
" Comon' get up, we need to leave before it starts to downpour." They could hear the slow steadiness of the rain on the top of the barn. The boy gives him a hand and pulls him up.
"I think I have an idea where we could go." The boy says mater-of-factly. He wills himself to not cry, for those were the exact words Kyle had said before...before... "Are you coming or not?" the boy asks. He stands and nods. "I'm coming." he whispered.
His footsteps matched with the beating of his heart, rapid. He hadn't known why he had them running, but he went along. He thought back to when they were going to the barn, how the boy had said that he dinit remebre his name, how he had given the boy a name, Darcy. And Darcy had given the man a name too, Collin. Collin liked his name, he thought it sounded familiar. It was just another piece connected to the empty spaces of his holey memory.
Collin looked at Darcy, who was sweating. "Why are we running?" Collin asked. Darcy glanced back at him. "I thought you were smarter than me." he smirked. Darcy looked back in front of him. "Stop asking so many questions." Collin continued to run, his muscles aching as he did so. He had ran every day since the creatures had been there, but he still hadn't gotten used to the aching pain he felt after he had hurt his leg. "please...can....wee......stop." He weased. Darcy looked back at him, and smirked.
"Go right ahead," Collin stopped in his place and doubled over chocking for air.
"Now," Darcy said "While you out here getting yourself killed, i'm going to continue running and survive, bye." Collin looked up, still out of breath. Darcy smiled a knifing smile. Collin took a deep breath, and continued running, occasionally glaring at the back of Darcy's head.
Natalie "You know, I could've left you back there, but I didn't. I don't think I ever heard the words 'thank you' come out of your mouth." Darcy said, glancing back at Collin. "Ha. I don't think you really care about the things I do and don't do." Collin said, smirking. "Little boy." he added. Darcy stopped and turned to look at Collin. "I'm trying to help you. I think you'd better clear up the attitude. I can ditch you anytime." Darcy turned around and ran. Collin ran after him, more of a gallop because of his leg.
The rest of the way Darcy had not spoken to Collin, and again Collin felt as if his legs were on fire. Then after a while Collin gave in.
"FINE! I'm sorry, it's just that I'm not used to this much running, in such a short amount of-" But Collin couldn't finish his sentence, because a high-pitched screeching noise sounded from the hills.
Natalie "Shit!" Darcy said suddenly. Collin looked around. "We need to go! Now!" Darcy yelled, running as a chorus of screams set out. "What the hell is happening?" Collin asked, frantic. "Someone's being turned!" Darcy yelled back to Collin. Becca Collin stopped, staring into the hills.
"Let's go!" He screamed and pulled on Collins arm.
Collin began to run.
"Oooh, so NOW you can run." Darcy said.
" YES! Because frankly, I don't feel like dying today." Natalie Darcy caught up with Collin. "Well I was trying to get us to a safe place so this wouldn't happen! If you hadn't had to stop to complain, we would've been there right now, safe and sound! But, noooo.... You just HAD to make a pit stop!" Darcy yelled at Collin. "Can we get along for two seconds?!" Collin yelled, running harder, his injured leg throbbing. Darcy's eyes softened. "Fine. We should find another place other than the barn, though. It's starting to rain." Darcy said. A house was focusing in the distant.
"What if someone lives there?"
"What did I tell you, There are only about twenty to thirty of us left, I HIGHLY doubt that anybody lives there." They were now at a slow pace run, more like a jog.
