Autumn (autumnmemory80) What are some of your favorite audio books? It can be any genre, I am not picky or choosy. I have a subscription to Audible for the next two months, and I need suggestions. Also, our libraries here have excellent audio selections. So far some of my favorites have been the Harry Bosch series, I actually found myself speeding in the car when it got tense(!), and all the Bill O'Reilly books like Killing Kennedy, Killing Lincoln and such. I do not have feelings either way with him, so I just listen to the books, and not his attitude on TV. Plus, he sounds awesome as the narrator. With David Baldacci I found myself at one point ducking in the car, and swerving when sound effects of bullets happened (I was driving through a dangerous part of Montgomery, Alabama, and we do not play around with gunfire.). And I love just about anything from Emily Giffin, so as you can see I love it all! Do you have any favorites? Favorite audio books? Favorite narrators? I need suggestions people! Help!

I agree with the Harry Bosch series + driving + speeding when it got tense! Yikes.

Traci | 29 comments I also really like any Michael Connelly books in audio format. My most recent favorite audio books have been those by Robert Galbraith aka, J.K.Rowling, The Cuckoo's Calling (Cormoran Strike, #1) by Robert Galbraith and The Silkworm (Cormoran Strike, #2) by Robert Galbraith . For some reason I love the narrator, and would find myself constantly laughing out loud in the car! Love Karin Slaughter books in audio format as well.

Tad (tottman) | 10 comments One of my favorites is Faithful Place by Tana French and narrated by Tim Gerard Reynolds. He's an amazing narrator. I've heard the other Tana French books are good too, but I think they have different narrators.

I also recently listened to On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers. It's a pirate book with a bit of fantasy and narrated by Bronson Pinchot who really adds a lot to the story with great narration.

message 5: by Autumn (new)

Autumn (autumnmemory80) Thank you so much for the suggestions! Keep them coming! I have to select six in the next few months.

message 6: by Tad (new)

Tad (tottman) | 10 comments The nice thing about audible is if you find a book is not for you or really don't enjoy it, they let you return it within I think it's the first 6 months.

message 7: by Autumn (new)

Autumn (autumnmemory80) That's amazing! I just downloaded This is Where I Leave You and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. They had a special for get two books for one credit, and neither one of these books are available on audio from my libraries. I have really been wanting to read them.

message 8: by Lynn Renee (new)

Lynn Renee | 1705 comments I listened to the entire series written by Janet Evanovich on audio books. Going blank on the series name but some of the books were One for the Money One for the Money (Stephanie Plum, #1) by Janet Evanovich Two for the Dough Two for the Dough (Stephanie Plum, #2) by Janet Evanovich Three to Get Deadly Three to Get Deadly (Stephanie Plum, #3) by Janet Evanovich . All the books are numbered and there are currently 21 books in the series. I found myself laughing out loud while listening to these books.

You are so right! I loved One for the Money and the narrator for that one book, but I could not do the narrator for the other books. I did listen to Finger Lickin' Fifteen and I LOVED that one! They definitely make you laugh out loud. Now, I did not like Plum Lucky, I just could not follow that one, I was so confused.

message 10: by Autumn (new)

Autumn (autumnmemory80) I also downloaded this weekend, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany and Stay Close. I thought the history one just sounded really good, and the book Stay Close, while I had not heard of it, sounded like a good thriller!

Yes, for some reason they changed the narrator on this series after the first three or four books. The first narrator was much better IMO.

I think so too! She sounded exactly like I thought Stephanie Plum would sound like. Of course, it was my first time reading one of her books, so I did not have much to compare it to, but she sounded perfect!

Wanda (wandalou) | 1 comments Autumn wrote: "What are some of your favorite audio books? It can be any genre, I am not picky or choosy. I have a subscription to Audible for the next two months, and I need suggestions. Also, our libraries here..."

I consume my books almost exclusively in audio form. Once I started listening to audiobooks I was hooked. Old fashioned reading now seems slow and duller than the narrated audiobooks. I probably read one a week. It is hard for me to pick a favorite book, but I'd have to vote for The Art of Racing in the Rain, by Garth Stein. It isn't even a thriller in the ordinary sense, but I was thrilled by it. I love the CIA spy-type books. I just read my first Repairman Jack book, Cold City by F. Paul Wilson. It was great and I see he has written at least 20 other books, which is great. I hate it when I "run out of" a favorite author's books.

message 14: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Watts | 8 comments I usually listen to audible books during my work commute. I really liked Blake Crouch's The Pines series. Great author.

message 15: by D.L. (new)

D.L. Thomas | 19 comments My little brain really struggles with keeping up with who is who when listening to audio books, so I avoid books with a bunch of characters and intricate plot twists. For that I really like Matthew Reilly books - I've listened to Ice Station multiple times and it always makes the drive go by faster (maybe because my foot is almost through the floor).

message 16: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Mccall i have never tried audio books; not sure whether i would like them or not

Lorrea - WhatChaReadin'? (whatchatreadin) It took me a while to get into Audio Books. Some of the best I have listened to have been David Baldacci books. When there are gunshots or explosions, you actually hear them in the audio. At times I've been at home and have ducked for cover or gotten startled.

message 18: by Dan (new)

Dan Sofer (dansofer) | 8 comments I'm late to the party, I know, but for what it's worth.

For years I've listened to audio books (or lectures) in the car, first from the local library in South Africa.

That's how I discovered Terry Pratchett! (His Disc World titles on audiobook are great!)

But the best audio book experience I had was for Neil Gaiman's Anansi Boys. The actor-narrator really brought the book to life.

message 19: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I love audiobooks for several different reasons.

One, I suffer from migraines and sinus headaches and many times I can't handle having my glasses on.

Two, I've discovered that listening to audiobooks during dental procedures lowers my stress levels.

Three, some books are better in audio. I know that the In Death series by J.D. Robb as narrated by Susan Ericksen or the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer as narrated by Nathaniel Parker are two standouts!

Four, some non-fiction or books with a lot of foreign words are a little better as spoken.

message 20: by Amber (new)

Amber Foxx (amberfoxx) My favorite audiobook experience was Tony Hillerman's Seldom Disappointed: A Memoir. I listened to it on one of my annual "commutes" from New Mexico to Virginia. The time flew. Hearing a favorite author tell his own story was fascinating--especially the encounter with another injured soldier in a hospital in WW II that planted the seeds for his mystery series.

message 21: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Just finished the unabridged version of THE JUSTICE RIDERS by Chuck Norris with Ken Abraham, Aaron Norris and Tim Grayem.

message 22: by Tad (new)

Tad (tottman) | 10 comments Just finished Six Degrees of Assassination by M.J. Arlidge which is an audible drama. It was an interesting experience. The cast was good, the sound effects were so-so and the story felt more like a television show than a book. It reminded me of the show MI-5.

Now I've started Breaking Creed by Alex Kava.

Kirsten, funny story, I listen to audio books at the dentist too to help with anxiety. But once, it just did not make sense, and kept repeating what I heard, and it just sounded crazy. After the procedure I learned it was on shuffle. I also learned this the hard way with Tina Fey's Bossypants. I could not figure out why none of it make sense and why everyone loved it. It was on shuffle. #blondeproblems.

Autumn (autumnmemory80) Right now, I am listening to Mr. Mercedes on audio and it is pretty good. I do not know what I think about the narrator, but the story is good.

Susan (paegan) | 5 comments I'm listening to book 10 of the Gabriel Allon series by Daniel Silva. The Rembrandt Affair
I have four more to go in the series and will be sad to have finished them.

Next up is the Preston/Child "Inspector Pendergast" series, all 14 of them.

I'm relatively new to the "Thriller" genre. So I have a long list of new authors to get to.

message 28: by Autumn (new)

Autumn (autumnmemory80) Right now I am trying my hardest to finish The Cuckoo's Calling on audio so I can finally get started on some of the books I downloaded from audible. Y'all gave me some really great suggestions!

message 29: by Debie (new)

Debie | 1 comments I have been listening to audio books for years and love them. My first audiobook was Timeline by Michael Crichton which I loved. I've done all the audiobooks for Harry Potter, read by Jim Dale, who is amazing, and has won many awards for his voice work.
The Help is great on audio. Each character/chapter is narrated by a different person (4 narrators total)
Some of my more recent audiobooks:
Velocity - Dean Koontz
The Book Thief - Markus Zusak
Gone Girl
These is My Words: The Diary of Sarah Agnes Prine - Turner
The Giver - Lois Lowry
The Ocean at the End of the Lane - Neil Gaiman
Divergent - Veronica Roth
Mere Christianity - CS Lewis
The Red Tent - Anita Diamant
The Husband's Secret - Liane Moriarty
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society- Shaffer
Also love anything by:
Patricia Cornwell (Kay Scarpetta sieries)
John Grisham
James Patterson
Johnathan Kellerman (Alex Delaware series)
Catherine Coulter (FBI Thriller series)
Currently, I'm listening to Kiss Me First by Lottie Moggach
It's an odd story I have a love/hate feel for (like I did for Gone Girl), but the narration by Joan Walker is a great fit for the storyline/character.
Have fun with all your new audiobook adventures!!

message 30: by Amber (last edited Mar 25, 2015 08:36AM) (new)

Amber Martingale I only listen to the UNabridged version of an audio book and only when it's a format that the computers at the public library can access.

The last two were Westerns: TO THE FAR BLUE MOUNTAINS by Louis L'Amour and THE JUSTICE RIDERS by Chuck Norris with Aaron Norris, Ken Abraham and Tim Grayem.

E. | 653 comments I do two or three audiobooks a month as I drive to work and such. One of my favorite authors is Christopher Moore. The stories are always fun, spooky and laced with death. The dialogue is full of humor.
Right now I'm finishing up Bloodsucking Fiends. The first in a vampire series. Every five minutes I'm laughing!
Others by Moore I've listened to are A Dirty Job and Lamb. All highly recommended for a lift of spirit !

Audiobooks are so good. I can study and "read" at the same time. The Robert Langdon series was really good and The Heist by Janet Evanovich was amazing

DianeAlice | 142 comments I find audio books VERY relaxing...to the point that I always fall asleep when listening! Then have to go back and find my place. I do only listen to them in bed though, I'm not sure I could concentrate if I was trying to do something else at the same time.

message 35: by E. (new)

E. | 653 comments DianeAlice, I always hit "bookmark" and set for 30 minutes if I'm going to sleep. I rarely make it 5 minutes.

Autumn, I put off Lamb for a while, thinking it was going to be sacrilegious. Happily it wasn't, but it is irreverent. I ended up enjoying it, and even found parts of it touching. Moore clearly has an understanding of the original story, and then he ran with it.

When Lamb came out, I was 21 years old and was a summer missionary, President of my Baptist Campus Ministry at my college, and closest to the Lord I had ever been (with the exception of now). I saw that book and thought, "I HAVE to read that!" I am going to take it with good humor. That is like the movie Saved!, it was written and created by two guys who grew up going to church camps and all things Youth!!!. And the thing is, it is exactly like it is... just with a lot more cursing. It is still a personal favorite of mine.

I agree 100%! This is a great book and Tim Gerard Reynolds did an amazing job with it!

Another favorite narrator for me is John Lee. He narrated The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers.

I also like listening to Susanna Kearsley and Lauren Willig's books. They both have decent narrators and interesting story lines.

Jessica (jessical1961) Hello all! I am new here and noticed it has been quiet around here for a few days. I just finished Where the Hell is Tesla? by Rob Dircks and am currently listening to Fugitives from Northwoods by Chris Bostic .

Does anyone have any recommendations of books, especially mysteries and thrillers, from the current Audible 3 for 2 sale?

Clare (clarebears) | 14 comments I highly recommend the Simon Serrailer series by Susan Hill. He is a policeman in the city of Lafferton in England. This is not just a police procedural novel because his family also feature in the books. Susan has written 8 or 9 books in this series, to get the best from these books start at no 1 to find out everything that has happened to Simon's familyhttp://www.audible.co.uk/pd/Crime-Thr...

Not sure why exactly but I don't care for listening to my favorite thrillers. I have tried it a few times and have had a hard time. I'm almost the exact opposite, Kelly. :) I have a hard time concentrating on nonfiction audio books, especially those that are more "business" related (although will listen to memoirs). However, I love listening to books in the mystery/suspense/thriller genre and will try to get those in audio format if at all possible. If there's not a lot of action or suspense in books, I find my mind drifting and end up rewinding a lot which is annoying.

TRaci, I have minimal experience with audiobooks. Tried Duspect by Robert Crais on a car trip and I found it broke my driving concentration and vice versa. What do you do when you listen to thrillers, just listen or do you try to multitask? It would probably work for me during an elliptical workout, but I can read my iPad just as easily and get thru a book faster.

message 48: by E. (new)

E. | 653 comments Once I started listening to audiobooks I got completely hooked. I listen while I walk the dogs or drive -pretty much anywhere -to work, to the store, while shopping..even while I count money at the close of a work day. (So far no $ mistakes) It might take some "learning to pay attention" or multitask, but at this point I feel like something's missing if I don't have a book going in my ear.

Christine - I listen primarily while driving, and it's honestly the only thing that makes my commute bearable - haha. If a book is REALLY good, I may listen to it at night when I get in bed also. The only problem is I tend to fall asleep listening and then have to figure out where I was before! :)
