Ann What books are you reading in this category? What year were you born?

message 2: by Leah (new)

Leah | 30 comments I am still looking for a good one for this prompt. I looked up titles published in 1981 and had to laugh. One of the books I read this year was published that year lol. Anyway, I am open to suggestions.

Hey, we will be reading from the same year ;)I think I'll choose A countess below stairs by Eva Ibbotson.

Lynn (lynnali) Pandora wrote: "Leah wrote: "...A countess below stairs by Eva Ibbotson"

That was a fantastic book. I really enjoyed it, and everything else I've read by Eva Ibbotson. Unfortunately, my birth year is a bit earlier and I can't really find anything I want to read that I have not already read. (If I don't want to read it, it will be a struggle for me, and I think this challenge should be fun not a struggle.) As a result, I may pick a re-read for this category.

message 5: by Anna (new)

Anna Rebecca (annarebecca) I was born in 1974. I have no idea what was published that year. I'm almost afraid to look!

Ryan (the-rybrary) Anna wrote: "I was born in 1974. I have no idea what was published that year. I'm almost afraid to look!"

1974 was the year Stephen King first published Carrie which you could use.

For myself, I'm thinking of reading 'The Secret History' by Donna Tartt because I'm a 1992 baby!

message 7: by Anna (new)

Anna Rebecca (annarebecca) Well I've refused to read Stephen King my whole life, but this challenge is about trying new things... so perhaps I shall. Thank you for the suggestion.

message 8: by Giulia (new)

Giulia I was born in 1997 and I'm thinking to read "Memoirs of a Geisha" by Arthur Golden that was first published that year. it's a book that I've had in my to-read list for ages and maybe the time to read it has arrived!

Great book. I read that last year and loved it.

message 10: by Ann (new)

Ann I was born in 1984 and it looks like there are some interesting ones to choose from in that category. Nights at the Circus, Hotel du Lac, and Emergence all seem like possibilities. Has anyone read any of these?

message 11: by Kerri (new)

Kerri | 56 comments I was born in 1988 and I have no idea where to begin. I've been avoiding this goal.

message 12: by Amii (new)

Amii | 37 comments I just googled "books published in..." and got lists of results. I chose a Danielle Steele book, A Perfect Stranger. I could always count on my mom to have one of her books on the night stand. I've never read one before and look forward to it!

message 13: by Meryl (new)

Meryl Hebb | 13 comments Nothing is jumping out at me for 1971. But worst case scenario, The Lorax was published that year ☺

message 14: by Kiki (new)

Kiki | 8 comments '89 was a good year! I have Terry Pratchett, Paul Auster and Ian McEwan to choose from :) the hard part here will be to make a choice!

A few years back my book club read Hotel du Lac. It was good and short, as I recall.

Great idea to use a search engine! I feel foolish, I completely blanked on this goal. I thought to myself, "well that goal is impossible" and just kinda gave up. Anyway, I searched like you suggested and found some great books published in 1988 including Matilda, one of my childhood favorites. I think I'll go with The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. I received a copy on Christmas.

Brooke | 10 comments Anna wrote: "Well I've refused to read Stephen King my whole life, but this challenge is about trying new things... so perhaps I shall. Thank you for the suggestion."

I was reluctant to read his books, too. The first, and only, book I've read of his so far is "Under the Dome". I actually really, really liked it. I was expecting some gore because of his reputation, but this book wasn't over the top in that in my opinion. You might enjoy it, too.

message 18: by Brooke (new)

Brooke | 10 comments I was born in 1992. The book that looks most promising out of the list I just looked at is "Lost Boys" by Orson Scott Card. I read Ender's Game and loved it. I'm hoping this book will be just as good. It seems like a suspenseful book. I can't wait to read it!

Meryl wrote: "Nothing is jumping out at me for 1971. But worst case scenario, The Lorax was published that year ☺"

What about "Steal This Book"? It would at least be something interesting and different.

As for me, 1991 here. I was pleased to find that a book I've been meaning to read anyway, American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis, came out that year.

message 20: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Blaylock (samanthakwasney) I haven't even looked yet for books from 1978, I need to get busy on my list

I just looked since its mine too. Theres a lot. The Stand, The World According to Garp, Freckle Juice (with my kids), Wifey, Requiem for a Dream to start.

message 22: by Leanne (new)

Leanne (lvinny123) | 10 comments 1985...handmaids tale by Margaret Atwood. It was a pretty easy choice.

message 23: by Daneil (last edited Jan 04, 2015 12:51PM) (new)

Daneil Newcomb | 33 comments 1990. A friend recommended Dealing with Dragons as a book that should be read. I finished it in one day. It was cute and would also satisfy multiple other prompts.

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

1971 doesn't have a lot that interest me, but I think I'll go with Lathe of Heaven by Ursala K. Le Guin.

message 26: by Tris (new)

Tris 1986 - The Prince of Tides

message 27: by Ann (new)

Ann 1984- "Brothers and Keepers" by John Edgar Wideman. Looks really interesting. It's a memoir also about two brothers. One grows up and has a good career and family, the other a criminal. The author explores why he is so different from his brother. This is one I wouldn't have ever come across without this challenge and I'm glad I found it!

message 28: by Julia (last edited Jun 21, 2015 04:07PM) (new)

Julia (_mj_howard) | 57 comments I read "Travels with My Aunt" by Graham Greene published in 1969; it was delightful.

Oh Lost Boys does sound interesting Brooke. I'm also born in 1992 and I had a hard time decided which book to read that satisfied this prompt. I ended up going with The Stinky Cheeseman: And Other Fairly Stupid Tales, a childhood favorite of mine that happened to be published the same year I was born and it was a quick read - so it fulfilled the prompt. However if I find the time, I'll definitely look into Lost Boys.

message 30: by Ariel (new)

Ariel | 33 comments 1991 is mine, and I'm going to read Tam Lin by Pamela Dean. I've never read anything by her before, but I loved Diana Wynne Jones' take on the Tam Lin story in Fire and Hemlock, so I decided to try it. It wound up being a lot bigger than I was expecting when I ordered it, though: over 450 pages.

Megan (megabou) | 64 comments Kerri wrote: "I was born in 1988 and I have no idea where to begin. I've been avoiding this goal."

I was also born in 1988. I think I'm going to read Cat's Eye by Margaret Atwood. The same author that wrote The Handmaid's Tale.

message 32: by Clare (new)

Clare Bryant | 5 comments I'm 1981 too. Am thinking Goodnight Mr Tom.

message 33: by Sara (new)

Sara | 1 comments 1971, I'm thinking about Go Ask Alice. It has either great reviews or awful ones. I agree with previous mentions that '71 didn't have interesting selections.

message 34: by Lieke (new)

Lieke 1981: Ronja rövardotter by Astrid Lindgren

message 35: by Alexis (new)

Alexis O (saboknits) | 76 comments 77. I just finished reading Charmed Life to my daughter. She always wants a sibling and my husband and I keep telling her "too bad!" This book definitely doesn't romanticize that part of family life. Gwendolyn is an absolutely terrible sister. My girl loved the book and I thought it was quite cute.

message 36: by Belinda (new)

Belinda (belindalt) | 99 comments 1987 here and as of now I'm planning to read Misery

message 37: by Tatiana (new)

Tatiana (pluidenovembre) | 29 comments 1974, I've already read Carrie so I'm going with Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi. I bought it last year and have almost started reading it several times but it scares me a little.

message 38: by Katie (new)

Katie | 63 comments I was born in 1986 & am thinking of Howl's Moving Castle, but haven't had great success in searching for books published that year. I tried Wikipedia, but didn't love their selection. What search methods do you use for this one?

I loved Howl's Moving Castle, so I don't see how you can lose with that one, but if you are looking for alternatives, here is a listopia of books published in '86: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

TheCarmanita 1992: The Tale of the Body Thief, Anne Rice. (Vampire Chronicles, bk 4)

message 42: by Chris (new)

Chris Hoag | 28 comments 1960. The Country Girls by Edna O'Brien most likely but if I get pressed for time it may be Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss or The Tomten by Viktor Rydberg.

Here is a listopia, just be sure to check, b/c sometimes people vote, not realizing that the book they voted for doesn't fit the parameters of the list.

I haven't read any of the books on this list, but have At Home in Mitford on my to-read list.

message 46: by Sara (last edited May 12, 2015 12:20PM) (new)

Sara 1979 - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was published that year. It's not really my kind of read, but so many people talk about loving the book I might have to give it a read.

Other choices for me are The Neverending Story and Flowers in the Attic

message 47: by Jazs (new)

Jazs 1990

Thinking either Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf or The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien. I own a few others that were realized the year I was born - Mother Tongue by Bill Bryson, Immortality by Milan Kundera - but the Wolf one and the O'Brien one are appealing to me the most right now anyway.

We read The Things They Carried in high school and I thought it was really fantastic. It's definitely still to this day one of my favorite books assigned in high school.

I'm also 1990, actually. I was thinking of reading Possession by A.S. Byatt, Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, My Son's Story by Nadine Gordimer, or Devil in a Blue Dress by Walter Mosley. Has anyone read any of these? Are there other books from 1990 you would recommend?

message 49: by Jackie (new)

message 50: by Melody (new)

Melody | 208 comments Thanks, Jackie! I'll definitely check that one out.
