Book check in: what are y’all reading?

On the Kindle: I am reading Murder on Birchleaf Drive, by Stephen B. Epstein, about a Raleigh, North Carolina true crime case, the murder of Michelle Young, and her unborn son, Rylan, by her husband, Jason. It’s both strange and interesting to read because Michelle and Jason were both alums of my undergrad, NCSU, and active alums at that, going to football games every Saturday.
I am also wrestling with a philosophy book by the great Erich Fromm, You Shall Be As Gods: A Radical Interpretation of the Old Testament and Its Traditions. It’s intellectually difficult work, but I am enjoying the hard work.

Audio: I’m listening to my friend the horror author Chet Williamson read Clive Barker’s The Great and Secret Show. Chet, you are an amazing reader. I thought I had read this novel while at NCSU, but I think I started it and never finished it. Once I finish it, I will continue the series with Chet’s reading Everville.

Please tell me what books are comforting you or distracting you right now.

Most recent review: The Devil Aspect, by Craig Russell: 15 hours of audiobook, and it was fabulous: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Also finishing up Mike Bockoven's work in progress (honored to do so, and grateful that he doesn't mind that I am being slow as Christmas--I am taking my time as an Early Reader, looking for every detail).
Tell me what you are reading, please. :)

Dwight | 1 comments I just read “Shelter” by RA Conroy, a great story about a young woman fleeing a traumatic past who becomes and employee and soon a manager in a small town animal shelter. Set in the 1960s, it’s a great story with great characters. A real tribute to novel writing, not a part of a trilogy or story-arc, not crime fiction, sci-fi, or fantasy. While those are my three favorite genres I love finding something grounded that doesn’t struggle in making the story interesting. Cool book.

Just started Jake Needham’s latest book in the Detective Sammy Tay mysteries, “Mongkok Station.” This is the first novel that is set post-retirement for Samuel, who left the Singaporean police force in the most recent novel, and is now engaged for his skills for his friend John, who is a deep-level covert operative. These books (starting with “The Ambassador’s Wife,”) just keep getting better, and I was thrilled that he’s got a new one out, just released last month!

I just got my pre-order of Eastman & Laird’s new graphic novel “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin,” digitally downloaded and I’m also excited to read that.
