The Firebird series starts off with A Thousand Pieces of You. We read this as our January 2014 BOTM, but the forum has been moved to Book Talk - Series for those of us who are still reading it/want to read it and the rest of the series.

A Thousand Pieces of You (Firebird, #1) by Claudia Gray Ten Thousand Skies Above You (Firebird, #2) by Claudia Gray

Feel free to discuss the books here, but please keep your posts spoiler free! :)

Natalie (allicatchesup) I was able to get a copy of the book from my library! Can't wait to start reading it!

I'm so glad you found a copy! I might peruse Half Price Books today for one.

Rebecca Aguilera | 25 comments I got my copy from the library. Starting it this week.

Rebecca Aguilera | 25 comments I'm on chapter 7. So far I enjoy it, it's keeping me interested although I'm not staying up late dying to finish the story. It's an interesting story concept that I'm grateful is not filled with science that is so above my head. I also enjoy the past and present moments, the author did those well, so that I'm not confused when she does bump back to the past to explain something.

I'm getting mine from the library. :)

Nicola Dorrington (nsdorrington) | 42 comments Read it, and reviewed it.

3 stars from me. I enjoyed it - but it had some problems for me.

Rebecca Aguilera | 25 comments I finished it. Id say 3 stars too. It was missing something for me.

Nicola Dorrington (nsdorrington) | 42 comments In fact, I dropped it down to 2, because the more I thought about it after I'd finished it, the more certain aspects of it bugged me.

Sad because the concept behind it was super intriguing!

That's what scares me. I've seen a lot of things about it being shaky and just lacking something to put it over the top. I'll probably still pick it up because I've been dying to read it for months now.

Nicola Dorrington (nsdorrington) | 42 comments Erin - definitely pick it up. You might love it. I just felt (and making sure I don't give any spoilers away) that the romance smothered any other hint of a plot - and the science was completely lax.

I get frustrated with the trend of YA publishers basically calling books anything (sci-fi, fantasy, dystopian) when really it's just straight romance.

If the author couldn't find the time to research the science to at least try and make it plausible, don't attempt sci-fi.

Grrrr. Mini rant over.

Rebecca Aguilera | 25 comments Nicola- I agree with you that it's not my favorite. However, I did like the romance, and that the author didn't go to much into the science part of it. But, I just felt it was simply lacking. Maybe in adventure, with all the dimension jumping, nothing really actually happened.

Oh. That is a problem if it's supposed to be science fiction.

I like my science fiction to be easy to understand, but if I can tell it's not done right, I won't be a fan. It's just too easy to sit there and criticize.

And another thing... if there is a genre called "paranormal romance," why can't there be "romantic science fiction" so people know what they are picking up? Can I coin that? lol

Nicola Dorrington (nsdorrington) | 42 comments Well, I am not 100% sure it's supposed to be sci-fi - but when you have a book with brilliant scientists who've discovered a way to travel to alternative universes, I would say that's sci-fi.

It's not that I want the science to be complicated but when EVERY time the characters start talking about it they end up going '...so anyway, long story short' or '...i won't bore you with the details' it starts to feel like the author is coping out.

I wouldn't mind so much romantic sci-fi - but this really is just romance with a vague sci-fi sub-plot thrown in.

I guess I'd compare it to Hunger Games - where the romance really is just a secondary side plot - the focus is on the Games and the rebellion. In this I kinda lost track of what the plot was besides the 'I love him, but I don't know if I love this version of him, but do I love all versions of him' over and over.

And I've just realized that I'm sounding quite ranty! I wouldn't say this is a 'bad' book. It kept me turning the pages. I just felt it had so much more potential.

Cheryl (cawils_99) I liked the romance but it's was missing something for me. I'm glad it wasn't a series.

I think it's a trilogy. I saw that she's working on the second book.

Cheryl (cawils_99) Well thats too bad about them being a series. I won't be reading the rest of them unless the writing is better and the story actually goes somewhere. It just wasn't that good to me.

Now that January is over, I'll be renaming this forum and adding it to the Book Talk - Series folder.
