misplacedselchie | 347 comments Okay, so I am deciding on this one because you know...it is actually JK Rowling. I read an excerpt awhile ago and it caught my interest enough to add it to my list. Mysteries are always a hit-or-miss with me but I'm pretty optimistic about it. I'm especially interested to see what overall theme this book portrays as opposed to her other ones (love trumps all, disparity between classes, etc).

Anyone here read it? If so did you enjoy it? If not, would you like to join me?

Jessica (jollybookshelf) Waaaait. Richard Galbraith is JK Rowling?

misplacedselchie | 347 comments Yes. It was a big thing after the book came out. Someone leaked the info and Rowling was PISSED.

message 4: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jollybookshelf) Wow that's crazy. Yeah I'd be pissed, too! She probably only told close friends or colleagues in confidence.

Monica (Tomes Project) (tomesproject) Hey Lora! I have read The Cuckoo's Calling, and I really enjoyed it. It is much, much different than The Casual Vacancy. I thought it was a lot better, although I had a little bit of a difficult time getting into the book. However, I really, really enjoyed it overall.

Bec (becgoldsmith) | 18 comments I really enjoyed The Cuckoo's Calling. Very compelling mystery and great characters. But can I just point out that it's Robert Galbraith, not Richard.

message 7: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jollybookshelf) You're right Bec! I changed it for Lora :)

Margarita | 5 comments I haven't read it, and I'm also reading it for the challenge.

misplacedselchie | 347 comments Whoops! I could have sworn I wrote 'Robert' lol. I blame it on mommy brain ;)

Emily I really enjoyed The Cuckoo's Calling as well. And if you like it, the new one - The Silkworm - is even better. Rowling writes mysteries really well. Who would have thought?

message 11: by Tom (new) - rated it 4 stars

Tom | 26 comments I've been meaning to read this for a while, so I might as well read it here.

message 12: by Jana (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jana (janebee) | 11 comments I thought the book was ok overall, but I think it took some time to get into it and the characters as well. There are many very detailed descriptions in it that I personally didn't think were nessecary, but in the end I still enjoyed it quite a bit because it gets better the more you read (: I especially liked Robin and Lula ^^

Natalia Grasso | 1 comments I loved this book, but agree with Kate. The Silkworm is better!

misplacedselchie | 347 comments I didn't even realize she released a sequel to it! I have high hopes for this. I tried reading The Casual Vacancy, but it was just too much profanity. I literally think my head exploded reading some of those words and knowing she wrote them. Talk about making sure people know she isn't just a children's author!

message 15: by Arto (new) - rated it 4 stars

Arto | 28 comments I liked this book. It never dragged and felt intresting thru whole book. Story was simple enough and there was no pile of bodies or unbeliavable changes in story.

I liked this book more than The Silkworm.

EllenZReads I'm reading this right now as a "side read" and thoroughly enjoying it. I like it much better than Casual Vacancy--I just couldn't get into that one and didn't feel anything for most of the characters.

message 17: by Jody (new) - rated it 2 stars

Jody (jodybell) | 531 comments Oh Lora - I was exactly the same! She dropped the C-Bomb and my poor brain just couldn't reconcile it. I'll go back to it eventually, but, but ... :)

I'm reading this one for this week as well - and I'm really looking forward to it.

message 18: by Marah (new)

Marah (eyreo) I love JK Rowling. I haven't read any of her books other than Harry Potter though. Perhaps this year after I complete the challenge. How did you like it?

Jessica | 225 comments This will be my "a book from an author you love that you haven't read yet" selection. Really looking forward to it! :D

Charity (faeryrebel78) I read this last year and it was just ok for me. It took me and while to get into the story. Jana I agree with you about the descriptions. A lot of them were totally unnecessary in the story. I ended up giving the book to a friend because I just don't see myself ever reading it again. I'm doing a complete works challenge so I will read The Silkworm this year. I'm hoping since everyone says its better that I enjoy it more than I did this one.

misplacedselchie | 347 comments I just started it because it was at the library and Red Rising was not. I am not very far, but I am enjoying it. It has the same ease of reading as Harry Potter but with less of the horrible language you find in Casual Vacancy. So, so far so good

Audra (audri8301) I'm using this one for the mystery as well, since I've been meaning to read it for awhile now.

Jasmine (pikakejazz) I really liked it so I'm debating if I should continue with The Silkworm for the mystery week challenge, too. Unfortunately (or fortunately?), there are a lot of contenders... Decisions, decisions...

.•*¨`*•✿ ✿•*¨`*•. Christine .•*¨`*•✿ ✿•*¨`*• I enjoyed The Cuckoo Calling much better than Casual Vacancy. I have Silkworm on my list for books I own, but haven't read. Looking forward to it.

Megan (megan_morris) | 170 comments I have this to read as well... or I should say finish, because I get to about half-way through and then something else comes along.

Sarah | 186 comments I am reading this for this week as well. My sister recommended it when I asked her for a good Mystery or Thriller to read for this week. So far I am enjoying it.

message 27: by Abigail (new)

Abigail I bought this book a few weeks ago and haven't read it yet, so no is as good a time as any!

I know what you mean. I started this in March and just finished it today. This is not to say that I didn't enjoy the book, because I did. It was more that it would only hold my interest for so long and then I would be off reading another book forgetting I was reading this one.

I am thinking I will give The Silkworm a try and but maybe not till the end of this challenge.
