20th Century - Back in Time Challenge

TWENTIETH CENTURY:
Every day we use devices and products that were developed or reinvented during the 20th century. This challenge goes back in time to the inventions and innovations that have become integral parts of our lives.

INVENTIONS AND INNOVATIONS:

Zipper - Several inventors contributed to the mechanical device we know as the zipper. First used as a shoe closure, it was the magazine and fashion industry that popularized this device for clothing.
Read a book with shoes or clothing on the cover.

Escalator - This moving staircase transports people between floors of a building using a conveyor belt type device. It had its start as a novelty ride at Coney Island amusement park.
Read a book with stairs on the cover.

Chocolate Chip Cookies- In 1930 Ruth Wakefield, a baker at the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts, added pieces of chocolate to a batch of cookie dough and invented the chocolate chip cookie.
Read a book with cookies on the cover or where the MC bakes.

Radio - Radio resulted from the contributions of several scientists and inventors. Both Nicola Tesla and Guglielmo Marconi are given credit as inventors. The device was patented in 1904.
Read a book with a primary character who is a member of the media (ex: reporter, photographer, talk radio host). Does not have to be MC, does have to appear in more than one scene.

Airplane - The Wright brothers demonstrated that humans could fly in 1903 with the first successful flight.
Read a book where the MC flies on an airplane.

Television - A device that captivates people all over the world was invented independently by Scottish inventor, John Logie Baird and American, Charles Francis Jenkins, in the early 1920s. The first electronic television was created in 1927 by a 21-year old, Philo Taylor Farnsworth.
Read a book with an MC that is in his/her 20s.

Personal Computer - Computer technology underwent major transformations during the 20th century. The first personal computer was introduced in 1975.
Read a book in which an important clue to solving the mystery is discovered online (i.e., through computer research).

Cell or Mobile Phone - Invented in 1977, this device revolutionized the way we communicate.
Read a book in which the MC uses a cell/mobile phone.

Microwave Oven - This electric oven reheats or rapidly cooks food. An American engineer, Percy Spencer is credited with using radar technology to invent the first microwave oven in 1946.
Read a short book - a novella or any book that is less than 125 pp.

Laser - A laser beam is a narrow, focused source of light. The first laser was built in 1960 although it is founded on a theory established by Albert Einstein in 1917.
Read a book with a source of light on the cover (ex: lamp, sun, fire, or candle).

Kellogg's Corn Flakes / Post's Grape Nuts - The Kellogg brothers created corn flakes as a healthy breakfast food served at their Battle Creek Sanitarium. C. W. Post, a patient at the sanitarium, stole the recipe and started a factory that produced a similar cereal he called Grape Nuts.
Read a book where something is stolen or read a book with a health/fitness theme.

Tea Bags - Offering a no mess single serving cup, the tea bag was invented in 1901 by two women from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Seven years later, the device was popularized by a New York tea merchant who shipped tea samples in small bags to customers.
Read a book where the MC gets into hot water.

Hershey's Milk Chocolate - In 1900, Milton Hershey began producing milk chocolate bars after seeing German-made chocolate processing machinery at the Chicago World Exposition. Hershey experimented until he developed a process that created a milk chocolate bar that was affordable and no longer a luxury reserved for the rich.
Read a book set in a European country other than the UK.

M & M's - This chocolate candy was created for American soldiers in 1941. The hard shell made the candy harder to melt in warm weather and easier to transport and eat. During WWII, the candy was sold exclusively to the military.
Read a book with a character who is serving or has served in the military.

McDonald's Fast Food - The McDonald brothers, owners of a hamburger restaurant next to a highway in California, developed an assembly line process for preparing and serving food to customers fast. McDonalds became the first fast food restaurant and sold their system to other restaurants.
Read the first book in a series or an author's first novel.

Birds Eye Frozen Foods - Clarence Birdseye was a fisherman who learned from the Inuit how to quickly freeze the fish he caught. This led Birdseye to develop a method to flash freeze foods that preserved their texture and flavor and revolutionized the frozen food industry.
Read a book set during winter or a book with eyes on the cover.

Guidance

Is this open-ended? Can we start anytime?
Yes, this is an open-ended challenge. You can start anytime after April 21 (the date it was posted) and take as long as you need/want.

For Zipper - The clothes or shoes can be worn by someone or on their own (ex: on a hanger). This task does not include accessories (like belts, scarves or hats) unless clothes or shoes are also shown.

Thanks, too, QN! This definitely was a little more challenging, which was cool. Sometimes I need that.

Thanks! I'm at 10 of 16 with the lighthouse now. I have another 12 days of Kindle Unlimited and the library is back to delivering books from other libraries for curbside pickup.

My library branches are opening up this week with a limited number of people allowed inside or curbside pickup too. It's great to have access to all those books, audiobooks, and dvds again!

Julesy | 409 comments I forgot to mention that I finished this challenge a couple of days ago. It was a lot of fun! Since I've been binge reading during sheltering-in-place since March, it was easy to fulfill the tasks. See message #7.

Thanks! I was so happy to see Rosenfelt had a new series. But honestly, I was confused with the plot - it was pretty convoluted. I listened to it TWICE on audio to see what I missed the first time around. It wasn't any clearer for me the second round. Hopefully, you will like it better. Since Rosenfelt is one of my favorite authors, I have not written this series off yet. I will try book #2 when it's released to see if it gets better. Of course, I like the K9 dog. 😚

Are the stairs showing, or is that the bridge? It looks like just the bridge to me...

Sorry so late answering. I've been sick - not COVID-19 thankfully!

Helen - Oops, I missed your post. I do not see stairs on this cover so it would not count for that task. 😞

Maybe looking at what others are reading will help. For cozies set in Europe, this list from Stop, You're Killing Me! could be useful.

So glad it isn’t Covid. Hope you are well now. I’ve been travelling over the last ten days (within my Australian state) so haven’t been able to check responses.
Thank you and Nell for the responses.
