Cait (clickcait) | 480 comments I considered The Woman in White for my 500+ book because I have it on my Kindle, but decided to go for Emma instead.

Good luck with your list. :-)

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Completed my first book on 1/3/15, but not as the week 1 book. This one was portable and easy to read a little at a time as I had breaks from household and family responsibilities. Completed a book of short stories--had hoped for a better start, but this was only "okay" and earned a ** rating from me.

Still working on Woman in White as well, but listening to that on audio so different opportunities to engage with that material. Will be able to step it up next week when the littles are back in school.

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments All of my books are new to me and not rereads, so I Capture the Castle may or may not fit for funny. The GoodReads description says "witty" and reader reviews vary, but some say hilarious and some say funny--so I will be taking my chance. I have heard that if you are not coming of age, but a more mature age, it will be more funny, so we'll see.

I am struggling with the first book so much--I like the story, but it is daunting as an audio in some ways as I am listening to the librivox version and don't know how I can speed it up. I listen to most audio at 1.5x the rate on my iphone, so this one takes so much longer since I don't see that option. Maybe with kids back in school as of today I will be able to devote more time to listening.

Anastasia (anastasiaharris) | 319 comments I love your pick for a book with bad reviews. It is a great cheesy movie at Halloween. It is definitely going on my list for that week.

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Here I thought I might come up short on a book that makes me cry without doing a reread or one that is classically known to have have an impact. I was delightfully surprised by Absolutely Almost by Lisa Graff and it caught me off guard at the end with its message and the growth of this sweet boy. Maybe it is just coming at the right time for me, but this book will have a lasting impact. *****

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments A quick afternoon read with lots of photos is the book, Undateable: 311 Things Guys Do That Guarantee They Won't Be Dating or Having Sex, which is for week 50, but came up in my library queue this week. It is supposed to become a TV show later this year, and I can see how it was selected--will probably be funny, though highly stereotypical.

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Just finished We Were Liars and it filled in a week that I hadn't listed one for yet, week 9. Pretty much had left that open for a book that appeared in my library queue and didn't fit into other qualifying weekly challenges. Interesting book and it really makes you think about it after you have finished it. Some reviews are so negative, but it clearly just shows me that the book got a response and it had a major impact. I listened on audio, so didn't have the distraction of the format of the prose.

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Had a difficult time settling in with a book recently (almost two weeks since I finished anything!) due to traveling with the family and being sick. Glad to have made some progress to report at last...

Finished The Princess Bride: S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure this week. I converted to an audio version that was read by Rob Reiner as I just wasn't getting enough time to sit down with a hardcover. Enjoyable--but I am one who liked the movie better. Good to have both under my belt though and I did enjoy understanding the motivations and thoughts of the characters better based on reading. Got to love the action of the movie though--plus I saw it with my whole family so we have more to talk about, including all the classic lines. Both are entertaining though, so do read the book even if you have already seen the movie.

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments I have read 8 of 52 books so far, but the ones that keep arriving via my library queue are near the bottom of this list! I finished This Song Will Save Your Life and enjoyed it. Can't recall how this one came to my attention, but it fit for a book about high school, though it is much more than that. I will put aside Looking for Alaska for now, though at some point I plan to pick that one up. I am currently listening to Harry Potter, book 5, and have set aside The Woman in White for now as I do not have a time limit on that one, as I can listen on librivox. I did get a copy from the library, but need to upload to iTunes so I can transfer to a device for portability. No rush. In addition to HP5 on audio, I got a copy of The Rosie Effect so I am reading that one before the library due date, and it should qualify as a romance to clear off my week two. I am so out of synch with the group...but actively reading and writing my reviews at least.

message 12: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is complete and I have ordered the next in the series, though I know this would be completed as an off-list book (though it qualifies for a different reading challenge). I am not a die hard fan of the series and at this point, just reading to complete it since it is a part of pop culture. And I just tackle as many pages as I can listen to before the book disappears off my overdrive account and I need to go back on the wait list for the audio version. My kids haven't read it yet, I think my younger in would enjoy this more than my older, but I am not ready to discuss with her just yet. Probably would be better though whole more details are fresh as I am unlikely to do a reread.

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Stephanie wrote: "Hi, I am out of synch with the group too!! Did you read The Rosie Effect?? .."

I have it here from the library---hope to get to it soon!

message 14: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments I had a hard time making it through The Hybrid Tiger: Secrets of the Extraordinary Success of Asian-American Kids, but finished it because of the challenge. That is one good thing about challenges, it helps me push through something that irritates me. But then I follow up with a book about a subject that scares me, All the Bright Places, so feeling more in a bit of a funk and I really could use the humor of The Rosie Effect right about now. But I have two other books due at the library first and who knows when I will be able to get them back again since I don't know how king the wait list is. Decisions! Info have the book out for the current week's topic too, but its odds are not looking good. That is the drawback of using the library for populate books--though I save a ton of money. It means I may end up changing my book list though, if it looks like I may not get to them before years end-1and yes, the popular books can really take months and months.

I had higher hopes for each of the last books based on reviews. The negative reviews I didn't really allow to sway me starting them, but I could relate more to them as I got more involved in each book. I wish my copy of the Rosie Effect were on audio--I would be listening to it right now in the dark, instead of catching up on the GoodReads site. Maybe it's just a sign that I need to go catch up on a few of the threads here and gather more ideas about books to add to my "want to read" list.

message 15: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments I have read 13 books now; 25% through the challenge. I loved and highly recommend Brown Girl Dreaming. I just felt like I learned so much about the time and it was wonderful to see the author's growth. I came to love many of the people in her family and appreciate that she just embraced who she was and there was so much love. I also picked up and quickly read Signature Wound: Rocking TBI. The ending was a bit too abrupt for me, but I enjoyed the book. I felt it would be really good for veterans, but not one I can recommend to my own daughter who is recovering from post-concussive syndrome. Have a few more to finish from the library as they are not currently renewable, so will have to see my options there. Again, The Rosie Effect is tempting me.

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Still reading books...just on wait lists for the ones here on my list. Bummer.

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Finished Counting by 7s and so have a book to add to the reading challenge at last. Enjoyable middle school read, recommend.

message 18: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Now up to 20 books, which is barely above one per week. Listening to a Pulitzer Prize book on audio and have some others out from the library that will qualify to advance my numbers on the list. Has been hard to find the time to read lately, but summer is coming up, so hoping for the less rigid schedule to facilitate more reading. I figure it has got to help as there will be less medical problems once out of the school environment.

message 19: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Saw that there is a line that allows automatic updating of how complete this challenge is - so I updated my books, rearranging some of the titles as I found out they fit others and allowed for new ones I'd read, but didn't realize they fit categories. Well, now that I'm done, some of the comments above won't make sense as books are listed in different categories than they were originally placed. No worries, I'm pretty much the only one reading my progress here - lol. Good news is that I'm 2% ahead of schedule. I thought I had fallen behind. And I have 7/8 of an audiobook done so that should keep me on top of things for this week. I may fall behind for the summer - so much of my challenge completion depends on how many books I find available at the library - and particularly if there is an audio version. Oh, well, progress for now - going to celebrate that!

Also, cool to note that there is at least one finisher of the challenge as of 5/27/15.

message 20: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Now 4% ahead as I finished At the Water's Edge. Not that thrilled about the book, but I enjoyed the local characters and growth of the main character, Maddie. I have other books in progress, but not on this list. Have organized to see what is left behind that was in he earlier challenge weeks. I have neglected The Woman in White, but it is because I just can't settle into a 500+ page book yet. To me, that is more of a summer plan since I won't have interruptions so often. I just hope I don't forget too much of what has happened. I guess if I do, I will seek out a study guide to that point to catch up on the summary. I think The Bees May be next for me, if I am able to start this before it is due AND finish my non-list books in progress. Still having a hard time with challenges 15, 16 and 18. My list may change yet again.

message 21: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments I really didn't like Gone Girl, but I liked Dark Places a lot. The characters are flawed people and the situations and decisions are macabre, but wow, what a story! I probably should pick something light to follow-up with now, but I'll just have to see what's in my library queue. I'm considering Gillian's first book to fill a gap in the challenges listed. I'm glad I picked this one for a book that scares me instead of The Shining.

message 22: by Ariane (new)

Ariane I am very interrested int The Woman in white

message 23: by Amy (new)

Amy Stabenow | 21 comments It's long, but worth it. I had to read it for a mystery class I took a few years ago. Some people refer to it as the first mystery (and of course, others disagree).

message 24: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Making progress....but only because I completed another young adult book. I often enjoy this genre because I want to preview taboos before my kids read them. Also, thank goodness for audiobooks so I can get my walks completed and listen to a story too. Need to sort my library books again and see what is due and if I want to attempt to read it before I need to return it.

message 25: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments My ebooks and audiobooks all have the items popping up on my overdue account as I have it set to automatically checkout. Nori ken is that all of these 500+ page books have all become available at once: Harry Potter, the Goldfinch, for example. And there are others from my list here that have also come off the wait list---and there is no way I can complete all of it, even if I read or listened in all of my waking hours. I think I need to select what I can reasonably finish, or at least preview them all by reading a chapter or two and them just return the rest so I can get back on the wait list. So disappointing, but maybe this time around the wait list will be shorter? Goodbye, Goldfinch, even though I had already started you before and you are lingering on my currently reading list, along with Cuckoos Calling. Harry Potter, you aren't even on this Popsugar Challenge, but you still have a chance of surviving the cut. I am a bit relieved I am a small %age ahead of the weeks here to catch up on some non-list books, but I had hoped to continue managing some of the weeks I had missed in the earlier part of this challenge. Happy for any chance to read though. Too many books is really not much of a problem. Waiting for the items once again shouldn't be much of a burden.

message 26: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Finished two young adult books and now am 10% ahead of schedule. Graceful led to a good discussion with my daughter - mostly about whether it would be a gift or curse to be able to know the future. The Brilliant Light of Amber Sunrise was okay, a bit forgettable. I may be changing my book more than a hundred years old with a book more than 500 pages long so I can be more current on my progress for the weeks. I have been listening to a Harry Potter book and still postponing The Woman in White. I am working on some books for a summer reading challenge too and occasionally they overlap, but I want to finish the other list first before this one as it is just nice to have some dedicated reads for the summertime.

Thank you for the input - I have only seen this one on book lists, and it was available at the library. II changed the book 6/11/15 in that category. I Capture the Castle isn't on this reading book list at all presently, but I may want to look at it in the future. I appreciate your comments - have fun reading!

message 29: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Since we are at about the halfway point of this challenge, I'm extracting the categories above for which I am behind. Reality is that I'm not really reading so much as listening to books these days. I'm making steady progress, but there are a few for which I haven't quite made the commitment to the titles I originally selected. That is in part because it's hard to get the library copy or if it is printed material, I'm usually reading something else which has come in from the newer books and if I don't read it now, I'll be wait-listed for several months minimum. I'm ahead on the challenge by six books, but I'd like to catch up in these categories, even if I change the books to new choices.

7. a book with nonhuman characters - The Bees
10. a mystery or thriller - The Thin Man
15. a popular author's first book - Starlight
16. a book from your favorite author that you haven't read yet - Left Neglected (I don't have a favorite author, so this is just one from an author I really liked recently and want to pick another of hers).
18. a Pulitzer-prize winning book - Swamplandia! (Will probably substitute this one for an Overdrive audiobook selection)
20. a book at the bottom of your to read list - The Red Tent - in progress
21. a book your mom loves - Half of a Yellow Sun
23. a book more than 100 years old - The Woman in White
e (still trying--perhaps)
25. a book you were supposed to read in school but didn't - The Crying of Lot 49 (but I may change this to Lord of the Flies as I don't remember the details so much and want to talk about it with my kiddos)

message 30: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Just finished The Incredible Journey, a children's book about an unexpected journey through the Canadian wild for three domestic animals. I am still five books ahead of schedule for the challenge. None of the books I have out from the library currently are challenge contenders though.

message 31: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Six books ahead of schedule now, but an audiobook of The Scorch Trials came in on my account, so I read that and counted it as book two of the trilogy without counting the first book in the series as book one. As usual, the book in a particular category is subject to change. I may either read book one of a different trilogy or else switch the book set in the future to fulfill the book one of the trilogy category. Again, more books have arrived from my library queue that are not likely to fit into any of these categories but that I really want to read. I am glad to have a bit of a lead on the challenge so I have more flexibility here.

message 32: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Didn't plan specifically for a books to meet one of the, challenge criteria, but happened upon Move a Little, Lose a Lot: New N.E.A.T. Science Reveals How to Be Thinner, Happier, and Smarter as part of professional interest books and it counted for opposites in the title. And
All the Light We Cannot See finally came up in my library queue so I can complete it as a Pulitzer Prize winner. Still slightly ahead of the challenge, but not by much now. I think three books ahead based on completing one per week. Getting harder and harder for my random luck to fill in a gap on this reading list. Still, my library queue and the books that become available there are my priorities, so I have a feeling I may soon be behind on this challenge. Still enjoying browsing the threads and seeing what other challenge participants have completed for each week's topic.

message 33: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Still two books ahead of schedule, 16 books left in the challenge for the year. Still seeing what I can get on audio, but also have books that are in the library queue and may need to be switched out to meet the deadlines. Just finished The Selection but will only be reading that one as part of a trilogy as I am doing Th Maze Runner series also and those books will count for another category alone with selections 2 & 3 of the trilogy. Need to complete that third one. Several partial books starts (three, I think) and really Ned to complete those but I am wait-listed at library for available copies. Maybe I can find some short stories to complete a few more book categories.

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Finished Where She Went. Was a good choice for the category of a book by a favorite author that I haven't read. I had picked this book up from the library many times, but it never made it to my nightstand as an actual book I read. Instead it always languished in my tote bag and eventually wet back to the library unopened. This nudge from the challenge left me very satisfied and gave closure to the initial book If I Stay, which was so sad.

message 36: by Tanya (last edited Sep 29, 2015 03:54PM) (new)

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Completed The Red Tent and still reading other non-list books. Listening to The Woman in White on podcast instead of reading it. Tried The Time Machine as a Librivox recording, but will need to switch versions or go to print as I don't care for one of the readers and it is annoying me to listen.

message 37: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Looked at a friend's book list for the challenge and realized that the The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up would count as a book originally written in another language. This means I'm still on track! Wow! I thought I was falling behind this week. Then I reviewed my list and I think Gillian Flynn's The Grownup counts under thriller. So, now I'm a week ahead. Not sure what else I can fit from my current queue in my actual bookstack or my to be read list into this challenge. I'm currently listening to The Martian and loving it (not on my booklist presently). I also am listening to The Boston Girl, which will count as a book my mom loves.

message 38: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Here are books still left on my list:
23. a book more than 100 years old - The Woman in White
25. a book you were supposed to read in school but didn't - The Crying of Lot 49 (but I may be changing this one)
30. a book that came out the year you were born - The Electric Kool-aid Acid Test/The Kandy Kolored Tangerine Flake Streamline Baby/Radical Chic & Mau Mauing the Flak Catchers
31. a book with bad reviews - The Witches of Eastwick (open to substituting here)
34. a trilogy (the third) - The One or The Death Cure
35. a book from your childhood - The Time Machine
44. a book you own but have never read - Freedom (probably changing this one to something shorter and possibly more recent or recommended within my circle of friends)
47. a book set during Christmas (or similar holiday) - Let It Snow
48. a book written by an author with your same initials - The Road Home
49. a play - August: Osage County
50. a banned book - I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

11 more books! This challenge is 75% complete!

You're doing well!
How was the 2nd Maze Runner? I didn't really like the 1st but I'm curious about how the story is evolving in the sequel.

I liked it better than the first as I felt there was more character development and also new characters added interest. Trying to get the final book to finish the trilogy, but still too low in my library queue. I listened to both on audio, so that may affect how well I like the book. I also listen to it faster than the reader originally records it, so there is much more of a sense of urgency in these adventures.

Ok, thanks! For the 1st, I found the beginning fast paced, so I suppose speeding the listening adds a big sense of urgency during the action scenes. Not bad for this kind of dystopia.

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Still on track with 41 of 52 (79%)completed. Really shocked actually, as I have so many titles pulling me in another direction. Not sure what I'm going to listen to next, but yes, I'm sure it will be an audiobook. I just completed The Boston Girl and highly recommend it in this version because of the wonderful narration by Linda Lavin. The last book was also on audio and I thought the narrator rocked the story and made The Martian very interesting to me, even though I rarely pick up Sci-Fi.

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Finished both the The Elite (which is not for the challenge) and The One so that this would count for the third book in a trilogy. And my daughter informs me that there is already a fourth book completed and a fifth in progress. But I picked this back when there were only three, so sticking by my choice. I have several library books out that will count for the challenge, but still preferring audio versions for stories to get through them faster so I can complete the challenge. The Crying of Lot 49 is a short book, so may try and tackle that one next.

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Really not liking The Crying of Lot 49. Have I Know Why the Caged Bird Singson audio. Finished Around the World in 80 Days and was pleasantly surprised by it! One book ahead on the challenge--not sure I can keep the pace, but I am giving it a go!

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Finished The Handmaid's Tale and am thinking of starting on the play soon, as this is Thanksgiving week and I will have family in town and I will need to be quite busy with all of the meals and entertainment. I am even on the challenge now, and it will be a struggle to get the rest of the challenge completed within 2015.

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Started August: Osage County and saw a review by a goodreads friend for a different play, so switched to that and really liked it. Hope others will read Doubt.

Looks unlikely I will finish The Woman in White, which I had started as the first book of the year. It required a lot of mental effort and is not a book I can complete in a week and I really want to try to complete this challenge (so close)! I switched to a shoe yet read by Tolstoy.

I find it a little frustrating that I have had a larger balance of audio to print books here to manage the reading list in the time frame. I probably would have done better with just 50 books as a goal. Also, I realize the hardest categories for me to find interesting titles for are now coming due right in the midst of the holidays, but I am glad that I have persisted, despite the added challenge. I also am glad I was able to complete a few items from the 1,0001 BTRBYD list as I had been procrastinating those in an effort to complete other interesting reads while finding time for this list.

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments The categories I have left are:
23. a book more than 100 years old - will change to Tolstoy book
25. a book you were supposed to read in school but didn't - The Crying of Lot 49 (in progress)
30. A book that came out the year you were born
44. A book I own, but haven't read (in progress)
48. A book whose author shares my initials (may switch to young adult book, of I can find one)

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments Finished The Death of Ivan Ilyich--liked it very much. This completes the category of a book at least 100 years old, so it definitely appears I will not finish Woman in White in 2015. I had moved that one around twice, as it was originally the book for more than 500 pages...I will get back to Wilkie Collins some day...maybe next year when the PopSugar challenge is only 42 books.

Tanya (tiggerrd) | 73 comments And back in business with a little bit of hope at completing this...I switched books again and it made all of the difference. But I am still a bit bummed that I made so many changes and books I had really wants to complete, (I am looking at you, The Woman in White) were bumped from the list in the name of list progress. Since that one is partially complete, I will try to finish it once this list is done and before beginning a 2016 PopSugar challenge. I have two categories left and over two weeks to complete, even with the holidays.

I switched to an ebook to find an author with my initials and ended up with Canyon Road, a romance, which is not my favorite genre, but better than horror. I am switching books for the year I was born too with the hopes of finding something light and quick.

The Crying of Lot 49 is still in progress as this short book really doesn't hold my attention well. I could care less about the characters and their outcomes and that makes it a slog to get through. I hope to finish it this week, and even with setting a nightly goal with a set number of pages to read, I fall short because I just get too tired and don't make the full progress.

Anastasia (anastasiaharris) | 319 comments I understand about taking a long time even getting through s short book. If the book is uninteresting, or poorly written it does not matter what the length is.
