Gareth | 166 comments I've always been a fan of fantasy genre, but haven't ever dipped into SciFi I'm starting here with Dune as it has really good reviews and is apparently a classic. What does everyone think about it?

Fabulous! A true classic for the world-building alone. And the story keeps you guessing, rivets your attention. Read it! No question. :)

Happy (worldhasteeth) The worldbuilding is really good, but I'm not a fan of the story, or the casual sexism and homophobia. I've been told I'm a sour grapes grumpypants and that I should understand it as a product of its time, and I will grudgingly admit that I can be pretty harsh on classic works for not magically having modern values. So take it with a grain of salt (or spice) and enjoy it for what it is - a great SF classic.

(But I don't know anyone who thinks it's a good idea to read past book 3 in the series. Seriously. Just don't. :P)

Gareth | 166 comments Sounds like it's a great place to start with the genre of SciFi

What I think about Dune involves a lot of capital letters and exclamation points, so it's best not to get me started. Suffice it to say - it's an awesome read.

Eileen | 1854 comments I'm just getting ready to reread this. My husband has read the entire series, but I haven't gone that route yet. He said it just gets rather obscure/weird as you go along. But I love the first one.
