I DEVOURED this book until three in the morning the other night. I've been in a really weird space lately where rom-coms weren't doing it for me, which made me so sad because it's my favorite genre. But OH BOY. Did this change that.
ENEMIES TO LOVERS BUT THEYRE ALREADY ENGAGED?!?!?! AMAZING.
So I have to admit I hated Nick in the beginning, but as the book went on you really started to see things from his POV (that's the whole point!) and you see how Noami was also an equal part in their relationship falling a part. I think I loved this book so much because it shows the after of the happily ever after, and how relationships are actually hard work. They got comfortable and forgot to be curious about each other, support each other, make time for each other, etc. I fucking loved the flower metaphor and how Naomi ends up sending Nick flowers.
The house and the overalls and the canoes... it was like my dream life. Watching these two people fall in love again was so refreshing; they had to put conscious time and energy into it, and I LOVED that. I loved that Sarah showed that relationships are a priority and take work.
I also really liked the emphasis on their family. It wasn't like regular rom-coms with the shitty families - you really saw the effect their upbringing had on their relationships, which is so true for everyone.
AND ALSO HOW THEY MET?!?! So flipping cute.
Anyways I loved everything about this book. It gave me tons of butterflies and made me want a burly mountain man husband with a little house by a lake. I want 1000 more books by Sarah Hogle.
Also we need to get her to Zoom us okay bye.

First off, YAY Lauren, I am so glad you liked it!! I loved the book. Romance is quickly becoming my favorite genre- just got into it end of last year. I love all reading all the tropes with one of my favorites being second chance romance/couple coming back together. There is something sweet in knowing all the faults and buttons to press for the other person, then working to make the relationship work and concur past hardships. This book definitely filled that niche for me.
I HATED Nick in the beginning as well. There were so many moments where I felt if I was Naomi I would have broken down crying and called it quits. I was so frustrated at his behavior that I was definitely floored when it turned out he wanted to actually work on the relationship. Once the story started to show communication and those act of love little and large, I LOVED Nick. Having them play games together on "Karen", that scene with his mom coming to the house, the nutcracker (btw my dream nook as well)... was so cute.
So, What was y'all's favorite get back moment? Nailing all her underwear to the ceiling was probably my favorite. How did you feel about Nick and Naomi's actions towards each other throughout the book?
I am so ready to read more by Sarah Hogle. Also, if you would want some recent read recs for contemporary romance would recommend Beach Read and Truth or Beard. Lauren if you ever want to chat romance please hit me up haha
Ps. If we can get that Zoom would be soo down.
Hello! It's me, a million years late. I'm so sorry y'all. I promise, as co-chair (?) of bookwork binches I will do better.
Anyway... on to the discussion!!
My first thoughts about the book weren't great. The first chapter had me rolling my eyes and immediately comparing the main characters to people I used to go to school with. Naomi was whiny and superficial. The way she portryed their life on Instagram put me on edge. Like y'all, I didn't like or trust Nicholas. I kept thinking "great, another heteronormative couple who hate each other but will ignore it and still get married." Because I was out off by the first part, I ended up setting the book down. Then I got busy, and the book sat for way longer than I had planned.
Lauren I love your description of the book- enemies to lovers but theyre already engaged. That kind of hooked me to keep going. It was hard to get back into the book, I had to reread a lot, but it definitely improved for me once I got over that slump.
I'm glad I finished YDEO. By the end, you were definitely cheering for Nicholas and Naomi to get together. I loved the spontaneous wedding at their house. I only wish we had gotten Nicholass mom's reaction to the whole thing. I've never been the biggest fan of romance, but I will be trying Sarah Hogle again. And maybe the book club can choose another romcom-ish book to read in the future!
