WhatShouldIRead Can anyone tell me the age difference between Jamie and Claire in Outlander? I know I just listened to it but must have missed that part (maybe from a loud truck that passed me :)!)

message 2: by Gam26 (new)

Gam26 | 22 comments I believe it is four years difference. She was 27 and he was 23.

WhatShouldIRead Thanks - that's what I thought but wasn't sure. So at the beginning of Dragonfly she'd be around 47 or so, right? I thought I heard Frank thinking she looked good for someone 60. Or am I making this up?

Kelly | 235 comments I thought it was 5 years.
She is 27 in Outlander and Jamie is 22 I could be off a year she may be 28 and he is 23. I don't have the book w/ me. So in Voyager they are 47 and 42. When they meet again.

Gam26 | 22 comments They were together for 3 years before she goes back but at the beginning of DFIA she is around 47.
I remember Claire making the comment in Outlander that she was marring a 23 year old virgin.

Can anyone else confirm age. I don't think she was that old at the end of DFIA. She was only in her late twenty's so that would only make her about 30 if they were together for 3 years. Goes back for 20 now she is about late 40's maybe 50. Now in Echo I'm thinking about 60.

You must mean Voyager. She was pregnant in DFIA a little old to be having a baby!

message 9: by Deanna (new)

Deanna (ibeeeg) In the beginning of DFIA she is with Brianna and Roger. In search of more information. That is where the story starts...from there as she tells Brianna about her father we, the reader, listen in on her narration.

message 10: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 235 comments oh yeah! forgot that part! But when in France she is about 30 when she returns pregnant.

message 11: by Deanna (new)

Deanna (ibeeeg) Yes, that would be right. So, thinking that she is around 30 when she arrives back to modern time, she must be about 50 when she goes back. Right?

message 12: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 235 comments Okay so do you think about 60 for Echo? with Jem's age I am thinking about 60.

message 13: by Deanna (new)

Deanna (ibeeeg) gosh...I start to become lost with their ages. Even though they are older, they do not seem old. KWIM?
I am thinking that she is close to the age of 60.

What I need is a timeline.

message 14: by WhatShouldIRead (new)

WhatShouldIRead I am currently listening to Dragonfly and I believe one of the papers Brianna and Roger find states that Claire and Frank got married in 1937. So, how old would she have been when she got married? According to my calculations, exceedingly young!

Isn't there any kind of timeline for ages in the Companion? This is starting to get confusing!

message 15: by Deanna (new)

Deanna (ibeeeg) She was young. In the range of 18-20. I believe, they were married for 7 years when she found herself back in 1745. If that is accurate, then she was 20 years of age when she married Frank.

I'm reading Echo and DG has not yet come out with an age I am on about 175. She has hinted that they are no spring chickens. I am sure Claire is about 59-61 and Jamie 5 years younger although with the life he has led he probably appears older than Claire.

message 17: by Deanna (new)

Deanna (ibeeeg) So I went a browsed through the companion guide. I did not find a timeline for the ages. Although I did look rather quickly.

Here is what I did find from the Ladies of Lallybroch site.
Jamie was born May 1, 1721
There is other information on the About Jamie page.

Here is a The Outlandish Timeline which covers through Voyager. There are no ages mentioned (from what I gathered from a quick browse) but it does give a nice outline of events.

Perfecto! Here is a true timeline with birthdates and whatnot...very cool page called Outlander Timeline

Enjoy. Hope this information is helpful. I am most certainly going to take a closer look at the links I have just talked about and especially at the last one - Outlander Timeline.

Jennifer (jennifertudor) Wow Deanna! Thanks for posting. Love that timeline :)

i remember this part specifically. She was 19 when she married Frank, and about 27 when she went back in time because she and Frank had been married for about 8 Years by the time she went back in time.

message 20: by WhatShouldIRead (new)

WhatShouldIRead Thanks for the timeline Deanna!

message 21: by Lesley (new)

Lesley Mcknight | 1 comments In "Outlander" Laoghaire tells Jamie she remembers him when she was 7 and he was 16. As she is now 16 that makes him 25, give or take.

message 22: by Katie (new)

Katie Raeder (raederkatie) | 153 comments When they first met he was 23 and she was 27.

message 23: by Gam26 (new)

Gam26 | 22 comments I thought he was 15 when he was at Leoch.

message 24: by Mariele (new)

Mariele (persephone134) I have always been confused by this. We know Claire's birthday, October 1918. We know that Jamie is born May 1. If she fell through the time wormhole on the Feast of Beltane, then it was the day of Jamie's birthday (interesting detail!).
I always assumed he is 23 in 1743, when Claire arrives. So the year of his birth should be 1720. Or so I thought. Apparently, it is 1721, as most other sources say. It's just a small detail. But I wondered whether Claire is 4,5 years or 5,5 years older. Perhaps it's an editing mistake. In "Voyager", Gabaldon decided Jamie should be born in the Chinese Year of the Ox. So she might have been lenient in hindsight, and pushed the year from 1720 to 1721.

message 25: by Terre (new)

Terre J | 4 comments Jamie was born May 1; 1721.

message 26: by Lori (new)

Lori Siska | 15 comments I've been reading this series for 20 years but I cannot remember anything about Claire's family. I believe her parents were deceased but also were there any siblings?

message 27: by Terre (new)

Terre J | 4 comments No siblings

message 28: by Mary (new)

Mary Joseph-Alvarado | 195 comments Claire is an only child whose parents died in a car accident when she was 5 years old (1923). She was raised by her Uncle Lambert (Quentin Lambert Beauchamp) He carried multiple degrees-- M.S., Ph.D., F.R.A.S.. He was a historian and an archeologist. He was born 1865 and died at the age of 75 in an air raid in 1941. Claire's mother was Julia Moriston Beauchamp born 1891 and died 1923 and her father was Henry Montmorency Beauchamp ? birthyear but died in 1923.

message 30: by C (last edited May 12, 2018 06:26PM) (new)

C (cherirnhealer) | 183 comments Thanks, Mary, I didn't remember this about Claire's parents. Where did you find this interesting little tidbit?

message 31: by Mary (new)

Mary Joseph-Alvarado | 195 comments The info is spread out in different books and the outlander companion book. also it can be found on Outlander Wiki fandom.

message 32: by C (new)

C (cherirnhealer) | 183 comments Mary, thanks for sending this information. I haven't been to the Wiki site before today, but I have the companion and I will look into it there.

message 33: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1360 comments If Claire's father's birth date is a mystery I wonder if he was a traveler and that is where she gets the gene from...

message 34: by Mary (new)

Mary Joseph-Alvarado | 195 comments Logically one of her parents would have had to have the gene...which would have been passed down whether they ever traveled themselves. It could have been her mother however IF Fergus is the son of the Comte Ste Germaine then Claire could be a descendent of Fergus through the Comte and his mother. Or it could be through some other line we will have to wait and see what Diana comes up with in Books 9 and 10.

message 35: by Seka (new)

Seka (seka89) | 1 comments I wished I had started the books before seeing any images for the show, there is no way I’d believe Claire is in her 20s at the beginning of Outlander... early to mid 30s for sure.

yes, that is correct

message 37: by Kristina (new)

Kristina W Jamie's age gives me a headache :-) because in Outlander Claire makes joke about "old men of 23" and in Dragonfly in Amber she specifically says she forgets how young he is, that he's not yet 24 (in early 1744), both of which firmly set his bday as 1720 in my mind. However in later books he's said to have been born May 1, 1721. So 'my Jamie' is always a year older. I must be one of the OCD fans Diana talks about ;-)

message 38: by Judy (new)

Judy (bigfootgal) I guess I'm another OCD fan because that has always confused me, too.
