Hello everyone, and welcome to our June 2020 BOM discussion of Slippery Creatures!!!

Feel free to start discussing the book as soon as you'd like, but do be aware that there will be spoilers here, if you haven't finished it yet!

Philipp | 48 comments I am now one third through. I like Will a lot and am very curious what Draven send. The setup is interesting.
I am not sure what to make of Kim. I am half expecting that it was not by chance that he showed up in the bookstore. But that is probably in part because the last K.J. Charles book I read was Any Old Diamonds and I did not see that ones twist coming, so now I am overcompensating.

Ha, yes! I find myself second, third and fourth guessing every character's motivation in all of her books!! I love that!!!

Teal (howiebing) | 1943 comments Oops, I didn't realize the conversation was underway here, because there's no link to it in the BOMC thread!

I finished the book about 10 days ago, and am barely holding myself back from a reread. I thought it was classic KJC, which means very good indeed.

Trio | 670 comments I'm finishing up Someday, Someday, hopefully tonight, and I'll be able to start Slippery Creatures tomorrow. Everyone I know has LOVED it, and I can't wait!

Apologies Teal! I did post about it in the General News thread, but not in the starred BOM thread.

Antonella | 11563 comments I've read it and I loved it.

I already posted this elsewhere this analysis made by K.J. Charles about Consent in sex scenes: the first example is taken from Slippery Creatures.

I read part of it, but then it used Band Sinister as an example and I haven't read it yet, so I'll have to finish the rest of the article when I've finished reading Band Sinister.

Philipp | 48 comments So, I love Phoebe, she is great and the way she talks about Kim is the main reason I kinda like him now. It is only kinda because the twist happened and it is worse than I expected. I just hope he has good reasons for his actions.

SamSpayedPI | 596 comments I never trusted Kim. From the moment he showed up at the store, I was like, "Well, that seems awfully . . . convenient."

Same here! In my case, I think it's partly due to the way the blurb is phrased. I already knew not to trust him, so I had a really hard time warming up to him.

That's why I always try not to read blurbs for mysteries. Sometimes even revealing who was murdered is too much of a spoiler for me.

Love this. Such a young David Byrne, a fabulous ensemble, plus David and the two women singers dancing. Big smiles here.

Same here. I thought Kim was probably getting to Will by being all nice and helpful, following all that rudeness, lol, and now, a third into the book, even though some things were revealed about Kim, I still feel there's a twist coming. :-) Also, these guys have some awesome skills.

Ok, not reading other comments yet as I’ve only just started this, but I just wanted to say how much I’m enjoying this! And yes, the librarian in me is desperate to help him organize and find a way to keep track of his inventory!

He needs the help, Jordan! Travel back in time? ;)

I just finished a quick reread yesterday and today, having read this back in mid-May with a slew of other books in between. I'm now anxiously awaiting more of Will and Kim's adventures.

I also enjoyed Maisie and Pheobe. (Phoebe: "I love Kim dearly, but 'love' means a lot of things. I think more people should understand that.")

And K.J.'s wry ways of describing things: It was a very comfortable room indeed, except for the elephant in it.

And of course these lines that I also posted on One Sentence: And he owned a lot of books, although just now and then, when it got dark and the shelves loomed over him, he got the feeling that they owned him.

And those last two paragraphs. The very last is just one short promising sentence.

I would love to be able to time travel just for this! Though, honestly, I wouldn’t want to do it alone. That task seems daunting!

I’m through the second chapter, and I’m really intrigued by these characters and the roles they’re playing. Who says what they mean and mean what they say?

Also, I’m not yet at that line about love you quoted, Karen, but I agree! I’ve had some awkward conversations because I blurted out the love word without realizing what I was saying or what that implied about a relationship with a coworker once. *facepalm* part of it, I think, is just cause I’m ace and don’t personally think in romantic terms unless I’m discussing a Romance novel. Lol.

I’ve now finished it! I’m looking forward to the next book. I really liked Maisie and want to see more of her in the next one. I keep wanting to call her Millie. Lol.

Phoebe was great too. I’d love to see her find a proper significant other. That would be a really fun side romance... what if it turns out to be Maisie?! Would that be too convenient? Maybe.

I’m ever optimistic and didn’t trust Kim, but kept falling for him anyway! I wonder what hell do in the next book.

KC | 4897 comments This book was such a delight! The twists and turns, the lovely writing and characters. Phoebe was actually one of my favorites. I loved her apparent ramblings, how she seemed to always be on the lookout for the right word, when clearly she knew the precise one for the exact thing she wanted to get across. I do hope we'll see more of her and Maisie in the next book, and I could totally see them going on their own adventure, romantic or otherwise. :-)
