Silvana (silvaubrey) | 1803 comments The naming convention in this book is pretty unique and fun.

Just in case you want a Teixcalaanli name:

Being old does that ;-)

Thankfully I'm a sprightly youth (until tomorrow :-? ) and I remember mine is "Fourteen Mitre Saw"

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 1803 comments I am not sure which number to use, the SF books or all SFF books so I could get Forty something, but I'll go with SF.

Mine is Twentyone-and-a-half Nook. Now that's a mouthful but I'll use Nook as my nickname.

I've been silent because my first thought for a name was definitely pretentious. Now that you've cleared the way, however, I feel like I can finally reveal my identity as 10 Simoom.

Amusing sidenote: I'm listening to this book on Audible (at 1.75 speed) and the names in the book sometimes set my Amazon Echo off. At one point, one character asked another character a question and Alexa tried to answer it.

message 32: by Lee (new)

Lee (the Book Butcher) (butcherfromgeorgia) does the narrator sound like you Misti?

message 33: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 1778 comments I am Fifteen Thunderstorm.

Incidentally, I am enjoying the naming conventions in this book, (like the guy who gauchely named himself Thirty-Six All-Terrain Tundra Vehicle) with one exception: whenever I see the name Six Direction, especially in close proximity to One Lightning, I can’t help but think about a certain boy band. Which is a bit distracting.

message 34: by Jan (new)

Jan | 773 comments I feel we need more fun low engagement threads like this that allows everyone to have fun together!

message 35: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 1803 comments If anyone feels unsatisfied with the name system in the Tor article, in the book there were people that used pseudonym.

I want the plant and scientific concept names.

That’s like astrology for me. As a kid whenever I read the horoscope in the newspaper it always went like this:

Sagittarius: You will find your one true love!

Capricorn: You will come into great wealth!

Pisces: Good day to clean your room.

I just realized that there are more in the article, about the meaning of the numbers in specific:

(view spoiler)

For those whose numbers exceed 13, how would you interpret your name? Combine the meaning of 10 and 3, for instance? Or double 5 and 3?

Mer | 205 comments Silvana wrote: "For those whose numbers exceed 13, how would you interpret your name? Combine the meaning of 10 and 3, for instance? Or double 5 and 3?..."
Or you could add the individual numbers together and go with that number. My 41 could be 5.
