So, how does this work?
We read books of 160pages plus to spell out our word (see also the RULES! )
We have two weeks to spell out our word as many times as possible, and get points for how long each book is!
EVERY book we read MUST be part of the spell out.

In addition, we can get points for 10 books with relevant tags for our wheel slice (tags, not MPG)
Finding books with tags is a TEAM endeavour - it's 10 for the whole team, not each.

Individually we can also fill out books against the task list we have.
Everyone has the same list but it is an INDIVIDUAL endeavour - we can all read a book with a yellow cover and claim the points.
You can only read for each task once.

Finally! there are also points available for taking part in the BOM discussions.
This is entirely OPTIONAL, but if the book appeals do consider reading it, or even volunteering to write a set of discussion questions - we get even more points if the randomiser smiles on us :)

Admin
I am not going to ask for a Books Read thread separate to this one, but will set up a team reporting and planning sheet.
This means that you can either report a completed book here, or just update the sheet.
In either case you will need to record:
- the link to the book edition you read
- the page count of the book edition you read (or the default if you read an audio version / large print)
- the date you finished it
- the spell out letters and reasons (i.e. Simon char / Robert author / Expanse series etc)
- if it has one of the tags for the round
- the task you are using it for, with reason (if a book doesn't work for a task that's OK!)

General Stuff
Please make sure to pop into the thread at LEAST ONCE a week, so that we know you are still playing.
Chat here about life, books, whatever, but keep it nice!
If you have a question or problem bring it here or PM me / Danielle for help
Try to remember to shelve your finished books on your Wheels shelf. It's super helpful if you only add them when you are finished (easier to spot differences between how many the sheet thinks you've read and how many GR thinks you've read!) but I won't get too hung up on that as I'm a bad offended of tagging current books with the shelf. Just please don't add all your planned books! :)

Hello!

Wheels is nearly on us! I'll get information on how it all works up in one of my first posts, but before that, some introductions!

- who are you?
- where are you?
- what's the best road trip you have been on?
- what's your fantasy road trip look like?
- do you have a favourite road trip / travel book you want to recommend?

I'm Cat, normally based in London, UK, but currently hanging out with one of my sister's in Wales. I needed to be able to speak to people and have access to a garden during the covid lockdown, so I totally did a midday flit!

I've driven around Ireland (well, the North coast and down to Dublin) which was gorgeous - there's some stunning scenery there. But I also enjoyed a trip to South Africa - we drove around from a base in Cape Town for a couple of days, then up through the wine area to a town called Knysna, on the Garden Route, and then walked the Otter Trail - a hike down the coast with LOTS of ups and downs, staying in the shelters provided. It was hard but fun.

A fantasy road trip? In the real world I'd love to visit New Zealand, but more achievable would be trains through Europe to Istanbul. Thinking more bookish: Discworld! It would be fun to visit Lancre and Anhk-Morpork, check out the UU and have a cautious drink at the Mended Drum!

I found our book very funny! I don't read a massive amount of travel books though :(

✿~Danielle~✿ (dmh1) | 5684 comments I’m Danielle and I’m from Wales. It’s been nice to have two cooler days after the hot weather.

My two favourite were going from South Wales to North Wales and travelling around Ireland. Both with gorgeous views.

New Zealand would be a lovely place to go. As for book world, that’s a hard one, maybe it would be Ixia/Sitia from Maria V. Snyder’s Study series (and follow up series).

I haven’t read travel books so no recommendations.

Nancy | 577 comments My name is Nancy and I live in New York (United States). I've participated in other team reading challenges with NBRC, but I believe this is my first Wheel challenge.....so bear with me! It seemed like something fun for the summer!

My favorite road trip was three summers ago when I took my two kids on a trip around NY state. It was something I wasn't sure I could do on my own, but we had a lot of fun and got to see some fun sights.

My fantasy road trip is a cross country trip to visit the National Parks.

I don't read a lot of travel books and a book about a road trip that I've read isn't coming to mind!

Hi Nancy! road trip with kids doesn't sound like fun to me. I recall lots of whining of "are we there yet?" and getting carsick from my childhood road trips (up to age 12 or so) but I'm glad you all had fun! What was the best attraction / sight?

What sort of books do you read? 'cos of course fantasy books are full of road trips - the Hobbit and LotRs are epic buddy road trips aren't they?

No, my kids were actually really great on the trip. At the time they were 8 and 11, bu there was no fighting, they were helpful, etc. If I took the trip now with them, it would definitely not be as peaceful! LOL!

I enjoy suspense/thrillers, contemporary fiction, romance/chick-lit, historical fiction.....Fantasy books (besides Harry Potter!) are not my comfort genre reads!

morning Denise! I guessing you are another East Coaster :) Helpful to know which timezones we should be using to remind everyone of deadlines!

Speaking of which....

the countdown to the start is here (click the clock!):

We can start reading books for wheel AFTER 10pm UK 12 June; which is 5pm East Coast and 2pm Pacific Coast.

Those will be the cut-off times for each Round too, but Danielle & I will remind you closer to the end of each Round.

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 5924 comments who are you?
Hi I am Marie I am a retired nurse - too long retired to go back for the Pandemic. I am married with 3 grandchildren and ,at the last and I hope final count, have 8 grandchildren. Missing them all dreadfully as they are too far away to visit at the moment.
I have never looked as healthy as i do now, never had a tan to match the one i have now I find the Garden is my to be place at the moment

where are you?
I live in God's own County of Yorkshire - more specifically Leeds- although I am an incomer from God's other county of Lancashire. I have only been her 45 years so some way to go before I am thought of as a local.

what's the best road trip you have been on?
We have been very lucky to be able to travel widely we spent 7 weeks in New Zealand which was absolutely something else. We Kayaked on glacial lakes hiked in Ice fields on mountains/ swam with dolphins/ bungey jumped off Auckland harbour bridge/ got drowned in dinghy under a waterfall had to unpack and change n a car park

Cheating I know but we have walked half ot the south west coast path (SWCP) the whole route is just short of 650 miles so far we have covered from Minehead in Devon to Falmouth in Cornwall. In all weathers met some fabulous hotel owners

what's your fantasy road trip look like?
would love to do the rest of the coast path and perhaps something in South America

do you have a favourite road trip / travel book you want to recommend?

I have read Round Ireland with a Fridge
I also read The Salt Path whilst good it in now ay captures the immensity of the SWCP
I loved Travels with Charley: In Search of America
and I have Assassination Vacation on my TBR

♞ Pat Gent | 916 comments I'm HERE!

- who are you?
I'm Pat!

- where are you?
I live in Central Oklahoma

- what's the best road trip you have been on?
I went with my BFF on an extended road trip which involved hauling a horse across country from Oklahoma to New York. We met and did overnight stops with ladies in an internet group that had created an internet email list relating to our love of horses. I met online friends in person from Missouri, Ohio, Virginia, New York, Delaware, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Vermont, Virginia, Georgia, and Tennessee. That trip was in 1999, and my group is still connected to each other.

- what's your fantasy road trip look like?
Pretty much like the one above. Traveling with a good friend on a trip with a purpose.

- do you have a favourite road trip / travel book you want to recommend?
Amy & Roger's Epic Detour. I pulled the song list from that book into my Spotify account and my husband and I used it on a vacation trip to San Diego.

Katie | 1634 comments Hey guys! I'm Katie and I'm currently around Pittsburgh, PA. We were planning on moving to MI this summer, but this whole pandemic thing threw a wrench into those plans.

The best road trip I've been on....um....gosh, I haven't been on a road trip in forever. Back in college I went all over the mid/eastern part of the country with a friend visiting a bunch of other friends. That was fun.

I don't know if I have a fantasy road trip...to be honest, I don't really enjoy long stints in the car. My bucket list trip would be going to Japan and South Korea.

I do not have a favorite road trip book, so no recommendations from me. :)

@Katie: yeah, long car journeys aren't really my thing (and I'm in the UK so my version of long is a Texan's version of "nipping to the local shop"!) Japan and South Korea would be ace! Lots of trains and boat to get about rather than cars, right? :)

Sarah | 2131 comments Hi everyone! Saw that teams were up this morning but only now getting around to checking in.

Yes, that is my shelf.

- who are you?
I'm Sarah

- where are you?
I'm in the UK

- what's the best road trip you have been on?
I did a Moose Bus (I think it was called) for a week in the autumn around Quebec aeons ago in that "I'm avoiding real life after uni by going travelling" time. It was the perfect time to see all the autumn colours and was pretty fab.

- what's your fantasy road trip look like?
I love the Race Across the World TV show and fantasise about travelling like that, even if I know that in reality I hate incredibly long bus journeys and sleeping on a bus. Reality schmality.

- do you have a favourite road trip / travel book you want to recommend?
I do read non-fic travel books but I really don't think I'd ever recommend one. I usually find them interesting but not enough to recommend.
I echo Cat's recommendation for The Travelling Cat Chronicles though, I read that a few months ago and it was really sweet.

Kelly B (kellybey) | 786 comments Hi again!

I live in Iowa, in the midwest of the US.

I can’t pick a favorite road trip! I love to travel, and every road trip is probably my favorite until I go on the next one. The last long road trip I’ve done is when we drove to Florida three years ago.

My fantasy road trip would be taking a few years to visit everywhere in the US.

I can’t think of any road trip books to recommend. I don’t think I’ve read many.

Denise Lauron (dlauron) | 206 comments - who are you?

I am Denise. Mom of two mini adults, 22 and almost 20. They are both in school, and have been working on classes from home, via Zoom. I work as a radiation therapist, so I haven't been sheltered at home for all of this time (since March 6 here), but my family mostly has been. My daughters and I live with my mom, and my daughter's girlfriend lives with us, too. The girlfriend is still working, too, so she at least gets out here and there. We are still all on top of each other most of the time.

I have also been doing the errands/grocery shopping, etc, for three households. I am just recently getting my brain around all of this, and have started reading more again.

I decided recently to go back to college to get my bachelor's degree in English Lit in Spring 2021. I am finishing up the transfer requirements this summer, and I'll be taking a few practice classes in the Fall.

- where are you? I am in California.

- what's the best road trip you have been on? A friend and I drove from home to Las Vegas, and to the Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon. We stopped wherever we felt like stopping, and had an app to tell us what the points of interest were near us. We had a great time and had lots of pictures.

- what's your fantasy road trip look like? I'd love to hit every state and see something interesting in each. Hawaii would have to wait until I'm not driving, obviously.

- do you have a favourite road trip / travel book you want to recommend? I enjoyed Lost Children Archive, which I finished recently. It's about a family road trip from New York to Arizona.

Yes, that is my shelf for the challenge.
