Nothing But Reading Challenges discussion
Wheelathon 5

Team The Hobbit

Welcome to the Hobbit Hole!
1st please read THE RULES if you haven't already. I'm not going to repeat them all here!
Summary though -
We get a word every 2 weeks. We have to read books to spell out that word (using 1st letter of title, author initials, character initials, series name and translator's name/narrator's name if appropriate).
The books need to be at least 160p long and there are more points for more pages up to 1000p. There are some book categories that need more verification (see rules for details!).
Additional points for:
Tags - 10 books with relevant tags per 2 week round. This is a team activity so don't stress too much if the tags aren't your cup of tea.
Tasks - there's a list of 200 tasks. This bit is individual - you can read a book for each task once over the course of the challenge. Every team member can read for the same tasks or completely different ones, it's entirely up to you.
Optional more points from BOM.
We will be using a tracking spreadsheet to plan and mark books as read. If you can add a link to the books you've read that will make mine and Victoria's lives much easier too.
Finally - please come here and chat! If we don't hear from you at least once a week I'll start to get worried!

Hi everyone! I hope you are all ready to explore Middle Earth and are prepared for hobbit like eating over the next 10 weeks!
Time for introductions - if you could tell us where in the world you are and a little bit about yourself that would be great. Favourite books/genres and those you'd rather avoid would be good too. And on the theme - favourite road trip/travel experience.

Right so I'm Sophie. I live just south of London in the UK. I work part time as a trainee GP and the rest of the time I spend with my delightfully chaotic 2 year old. I'm currently pregnant with number 2 so life is only going to get busier from here.
I will read almost anything, but I'm not a big fan of horror and YA is a bit hit and miss. Favourite books are probably the Rivers of London series, Pratchett and Shantaram.
Favourite travel was probably my honeymoon to Kenya. We went slightly mad and decided that we'd cycle for part of it which was great fun, especially the chance to feel more part of the savannah. We also got to see the Masai Mara and another reserve in the mountains.
I also enjoyed spending time on Vancouver Island exploring. Seeing the whales while reading overlooking the sound to the main land was fantastic.

My brain is being a little slow this evening - please can you also let us know your shelf so that we can make sure the links are working properly.

I recently discovered Elizabeth Acevedo,

My favorite vacations/trips are cultural trips for me where you travel in a group and discover the history of a country or region. I mainly stay in Europe and my favorite was traveling Andalusia in Spain.
For the challenge I will use this shelve: imkeswheelshelve

I'm Samantha or Sam, and I live in Seattle, WA. My favorite genre is fantasy or sci-fi, but also love a good mystery/thriller or chick-lit book when I'm in a bit of a reading slump. I like some YA, but as I get older I seem to just find the characters incredibly irritating.
Favorite trip would probably be Korea in 2015. I think we just had the right group of people, and we ate so much good food and just wandered the city, did some hiking, went out dancing. Perfect balance of everything I want in a trip.
Imke -- I love doing a yearly re-read of HP as well. It's definitely one to get me out of a reading slump.
Here's my shelf! nbrc-wat5

I'm Tonya from Texas, living the in the DC area. My favorite genre is YA Fantasy and Dystopian Fantasy. I'm also fond of Historical Fiction and BDSM Romance. I have a goal of reading 100 memoirs/autobiographies before I'm 40 (another 3 years).
My favorite road trip would be... in the works. So far, my road trips have been utilitarian in nature and I look forward to the one I have planned that I call my "book tour". There are several locations that are in books - I plan to take 2 weeks and visit those places and do certain things while I'm there (i.e. First Beach and Forks in Washington).
My shelf is nbrc_wheelv.
Note about me - I suck at logging in but I try. Please feel free to friend and message me at any time!
Happy Reading all!

I'm Camilla from Finland. My favorite genres are horror, fantasy, scifi, thrillers, and non-fiction. I try to avoid erotica, western, and poetry. We don't have access to KU, but my kindle has magically attracted several thousand books, so I'm often able to find something to read, if a specific task pops up. Also, the libraries opened here last Monday, so it's possible to get books from them as well.
I work full-time as a school psychologist, so this spring has been strange with the schools being closed, and now they've started their summer holiday already. I will be on holiday for three weeks in July, during which I will not be able to chat as much as usually (we plan to hit some natural parks for hiking and spending time at in-laws' summer cottage).
Oh, almost forgot my shelf (too lazy to make a nice link):

My favorite road trip... Well, if I think about strictly road trips, i.e. driving around in a car, I guess my favorite would be a trip from San Fransisco to Los Angeles with my at that time very good friend and her mother in 1988. I'm not too fond of spending hours in the car. I've enjoyed all trips I've taken. I like both visiting cities (New York and London being my favorites) as well as lazing in the sun by a pool, preferably with a drink in hand. I was actually supposed to be on a pilgrimage in Spain now, today I would have been walking onwards from Pamplona, but, alas, that has been postponed at least a year.

My name is maria helena (but most people just call me MH) and I live in Sweden.
I read almost exclusively mystery/crime and especially British/Nordic crime, but occasionally I enjoy other genres.
My shelf is here
I love roadtrips and it is difficult to pick a favourite, but one of my most memorable was with a couple of friends a few years ago. We drove from San Francisco to Portland and camped along the way.

I'm from the US but have been in England for 2 1/2 years now.
I'll read just about anything, but my favorite/most read genres are Fantasy and Romance. I tend to avoid YA, particularly newer YA, as I tend to be disappointed despite likely the concept. That being said I'm currently reading The Hate U Give and loving it so clearly there are exceptions!
When it comes to road trips my first thought is a family trip we did when I was about 12, driving from Kentucky to California and back. Still the longest road trip I've done and part of how I've managed to visit so many states.
A more recent, memorable trip was about two years ago when my mom visited me in England and we drove from East of England down to Canterbury / Dover and then across the Channel via a ferry to France and continued to Normandy.
That was the first time I've driven to another country (apart from Canada where I was never the driver) and had to switch from driving on the left to the right side of the road.
The yellow jacket protests were going on in France which also made the road trip interesting - or annoying as there were a lot of fires on the roads and road blocks. I kept having to stop in places to explain that I needed to go through the road block to get to my hotel, which was difficult as I can't speak French lol

Loving the info on the trips and how different they all are!
About to head off for a distancing picnic at my dad's for the day. First time seeing family for a couple of months. That means I'll be quite quiet today, but will try to make up for it this evening when I'm back

My favourite genres are crime & thriller, and I really like Nordic crime/thrillers. Other genres I enjoy are chick lit, historical fiction, fantasy, paranormal, and classics.
Favourite travel... well I haven't travelled far, and I've loved the few places I have been. But I think I'd have to pick Iceland, I was there in January 2020. It had been on my wishlist for a very long time. Unfortunately we didn't get to see the Northern Lights, but it was a very memorable trip as that's where we got engaged. I loved spending time in Reykjavik and getting to see more of rural Iceland when we did the Golden Circle tour. Definitely want to go back to see more places we hadn't time to see this year.
And before I forget... My Shelf

My road trip was in August 2018...from Calgary AB to Denver CO....4 women on the road ....so much fun...
I like to read mysteries...lately thrillers ....but i ll read anything if it peaks my interest...
Heres my shelf

That's terrible you had to be separated from your fiancé! I feel like I had it easy being single and living alone, but still getting social interaction at work (as I couldn't wfh).
I'm also jealous of your Iceland trip. I was planning on going this year, but alas... At least I didn't get to the point in my plans where I'd booked travel and lodgings as I'm still waiting for a refund from a canceled Amsterdam trip

I really need to catch up with the Rivers of London series! And Discworld for that matter - although I am stretching that one out as there are no more books coming :(
And your Kenya trips sounds amazing. I've yet to visit Africa and Kenya is high on my list of countries to visit! (If I am ever allowed to travel again...)

Hello, my name is Natasha and I'm a cataloging librarian (cataloger). I'm from New Jersey.
I love science fiction, fantasy, historical fiction (before 1900 usually), science, history, and physics. I'm not a fan of chicklit. Some of my favorite books are The Night's Dawn trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton, the Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, the Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, and Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett.
My favorite trip was when I went to Germany in my senior year of high school. I can't wait to go back to Germany, hopefully in the next few years.
Here is my shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I'm Mary from Massachusetts. I work for a family business that manufactures industrial metal parts mostly for security fencing, guardrails, gates and greenhouses.
I've driven cross country twice. Once from MA to Washington state across the top half of the US. Then again 10 years later across the bottom in reverse from WA to Maryland. 1st trip was good, my ex-husband and I made a lot of stops and took our time. The 2nd time, we were basically breaking up on the trip and did it as fast as we could and thankfully in separate cards.
I also take a lot of day trips to go kayaking around New England.
I read pretty much everything but really religious stuff, m/m romance and children's books. I will read non-fiction and general fiction LBQT stuff and the occassional YA along the lines of Harry Potter or Percy Jackson if they come up for genres. I tend to read mostly romances and mysteries for challenges like this.

I have some library books I might need to get in first but I'm sure they'll work for spell outs and tasks if not the genres.
I usually read 4-6 books a week thanks to audio books and job that allows me to listen to them. I put down 25/month. If I read more than that will we be penalized? It wouldn't be a crazy amount but if I listen to shorter ones I might be be able to get an extra book or 2 in each month.
I love that they did a points per page scoring system instead of grouped by book size. I don't always feel like reading doorstopper after doorstopper and my number would be a lot lower if that were the case.

My name is Nicole and I'm from South Africa but am currently living and working in Abu Dhabi. My favorite genre is romance and read nearly all the sub genres except for historical. I only seem to read those for challenges! Not a fan of horrors or thrillers.
So hard to pick a favorite traveling experience 😩 But I'd have to say the road trip we did in the U.S. It wasn't a popular route. Started in Texas and then to Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Arkansas. Wanted to see a different part of the States and it was awesome!
Here's my bookshelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
And FYI things are hectic at work as we wind down the year, so I won't be reading as much as I normally do for the next 2-3 weeks but will try my level best. And will aim for bigger books whenever I can 😊
Now to go read the rules again, because the tasks look like fun.

BOM Polls

The mods haven't said anything about penalties for reading over what you signed up as. It tends to balance over the team most of the time in my experience.

I don't think so as I believe this is a relatively new method of accountability - having myself only seen it in the recent UNO challenge.
No one is expected to read exactly what they signed up, expecting fluctuation of 1-2 books, or more/less depending on the amount you pledged. And as Sophie said, it tends to balance out amongst the team as when one person reads less one week another will read more, evening it out.
It's really just there to make sure someone who said they only read 6 books a month don't suddenly read 30 or agree to read 30 and only read 6.
Thanks for the recs Imke, they look v interesting. The Fire on High has the added bonus of 3 racism tags so well worth it for this 2 weeks! I loved the 3 weeks I spent in Granada in Andalusia attempting to learn Spanish, so can understand your choice.
Sam - I think that's my problem with YA as well, but sometimes there are exceptions. The Korea trip sounds excellent.
Tonya - that's an impressive goal! Good luck. Victoria or I will message you if we notice you've been gone a while.
Camilla - yay for libraries reopening! Work must have been v weird for the last couple of months, hope you are doing ok. The trip sounds like it will be fab. Sorry to hear about the Pamplona delay.
MH - we'll keep you in mind if we have mystery/crime related tags!
Victoria - the switch is sides is a brain twister especially if you are in a car that drives on the 'wrong' side. Hope you managed to get through the barricades without too many problems.
Vikki - I'm glad you are able to see him again. Must have been really tough while you couldn't. Fingers crossed all the wedding plans are going smoothly (and that it's far enough away not to be too disrupted).
Rosina - I hope the summer lives up to hopes! Road trip with friends sounds great.
Natasha - don't worry we've only been up and running 24 hours so no rush at the moment. Looks like a good mix of book genres in that list and among your favourites.
Mary C - argh that second trip sounds like a bit of a nightmare!
Don't worry too much about tags, everyone in the group can contribute so hopefully will be manageable. I'm pleased with the page count to point thing as well, can balance reading a bit.
Nicole - you got sucked into quidditch?! At least that confirms you are a crazy fast reader! Don't worry about the slower start for the next few weeks while work is mad.

There were penalties as a team if you read a lot over in the last tower teams, but they aren't in place for this. Think the mods know that everyone's reading is all over the place with all the changes in the world from coronavirus so this is being kept relatively straightforward

A huge part of the entertainment for me in these challenges is finding books for tasks etc...,
I get sucked into tasks and get a little obsessive. I can at least recognise that completing 200 over 10 weeks is not going to happen! There's no way I can read 20 books a week.

For the spell out will we each claim a letter?
My strategy is to hit all the BOMs...
Off to check out some tags....

I most likely will 🤪🙈 Once things are calmer at work I will have more free time and will read up a storm. Happy to hear there are limits for this round.

I haven’t looked for spell out books yet. But I will over the weekend.

Tracking spreadsheet is on it's way and will be around before we start. Work and childcare mean I don't have it sussed yet (but Cat has kindly let me peek at hers so hopefully it won't take long).

Question about the tasks: I get it that each of us has her own task list, but will the task list start anew every two weeks (when the wheel is spun) or will it stay the same? I mean that if I read a book during the first week that fits a task, will I be able to do the same task again during, say, week 8, or will it be "done" for the rest of the game?
For everyone that wants to do some planning, our first word is PUB QUIZZING.
The tags we're looking for with it are insects, creepy, racism, wings and twilight. It only needs one tag (that hasn't been added by a member of this team) to count. Across the 2 weeks as a team we want to aim for 10 of these.
Hope everyone has a great weekend!

PS please be patient with me and Victoria. It's the first time I've been a full captain and her first time being a co-captain. There might be some teething problems as we get started but we will pick things up as fast as we can
