Excellent suggestion!
Excellent suggestion!
I wanted to share with you some really useful information I found on instagram. I made a post about it on the Praise Architecture instagram account (@praisearchitecture) but I thought I'd post it here as well.
There are deep set issues with racism in the architecture profession and the built environment around us. The list below is a suggestion of books we can read to educate ourselves on a side of history we may not have been taught or considered before, how there are severe disparities in race representation and why it is important to tackle these issues when building in the future. The Instagram post also has suggestions of other documents to read as well as YouTube videos and influential Instagram accounts.
Book list:
- White Papers, Black Marks: Architecture, Race, Culture. by Lesley Naa Norle Lokko
- Rhodes Must Fall: The Struggle to Decolonise the Racist Heart of the Empire. by The Rhodes Must Fall Movement
- The Right to the City. by Verso Books (free ebook)
- Mobility Justice: The Politics of Movement in an Age of Extremes. by Mimi Sheller
- Architecture in Black. by Darrell Wayne Fields
- Dark Space: Architecture, Representation, Black Identity. by Mario Gooden
If anyone has any suggestions of other books to add to this list then let me know!
