Spoilers- Don't understand ending please help

I just finished this book and I'm not the brightest guy so please help me understand one thing.
How was Ethan and his wife/son/boss and career ever real if the US is a wasteland? How does he have a real wife, child, etc? Real memories of his life?

I have a question maybe you all can answer.....how did the very first person wake up from the "suspended animation".....in order to wake up all the others? Wouldn't someone have to have made it those 1800+ years alive to be able to wake the first person from the suspension?
They were de-animated after arriving to Wayward Pines—current day.

He was a secret service agent in our current century. Then he was kidnapped and put in suspended animation along with all the rest of the characters in the story for 1,800 years. He was awoken 13 years after other people were awaken and rebuilt the town.
I agree that the way the book kept going backward and forward in time was confusing. It was a really interesting premise that I totally enjoyed.
I think the head dude programmed it so certain people would wake up and they were in charge of waking the others. Not certain at what point head dude woke
