Claire | 24 comments So what is the first book you are reading or plan to read this year?

On a whim I picked up The Magic Engineerat the library. I haven't read the rest of the series so we'll see how it goes lol

Cheryl Landmark (clandmark) | 861 comments The first book I read for 2015 was Awaken by Rachel M. Humphrey-D'aigle. It's a young adult fantasy and, while it was okay for the most part, there were some editorial issues that took away some of my enjoyment.

carol. | 2616 comments Technically, the first book I started (and finished) this year was The Last Policeman. Interesting take on mystery/doomsday apocalypse.

message 4: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) I had started Hammered at the end of December and finished it after the New Year. I've started The Hobbit and will finish it tonight. I have 1-1/2 hours of listening pleasure left.

Cheryl Landmark (clandmark) | 861 comments I'm currently reading Fool's Errand by Robin Hobb. Loved her Farseer trilogy, so I think I'm going to love this one, too. FitzChivalry is an amazing character.

message 6: by Thaddeus (new)

Thaddeus White | 50 comments The Perfect King, a biography of Edward III. First fiction will probably be either Teresa Edgerton's Goblin Moon, or Clifford Beal's The Raven's Banquet.

That's awesome. I just finished that book and am reading Golden Fool. That would be my first book that I've started and will finish in the new year.

carol. | 2616 comments Weird. Comments are disappearing. I wrote one asking MrsJ if she was trying to justify eating bacon (because, doesn't everyone want to??) and someone else posted an update that i replied to.

message 10: by Helen (new)

Helen I read The Woodcutter which was alright.

But I've noticed comment eating, too...

Jason Hein (jasonphein) | 32 comments The Warden and the Wolf King

So far pretty good. The first three were great as well!

message 14: by malrubius (new)

malrubius | 71 comments Last Argument of Kings (The First Law #3) by Joe Abercrombie and listening to Blood Song (Raven's Shadow, #1) by Anthony Ryan . Just subscribed to audible.

Lined up next...

Dirge by Tim Marquitz

Louise | 32 comments First read of the year is important to me. I always like to pick something really good for first and last book of the year. This year I started with Hollow City by Ransom Riggs. Another excellent instalment in the Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children series.

The bacon justification was happening in the 'What are you reading?' thread. ;)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) The first book I finished this year was Waistcoats & Weaponry, which was a decent read but not as good as the prior, I didn't think.

The first book I started this year was Fables, Vol. 20: Camelot, which was pretty cool but a sort of middle book tying up some story threads and laying down new ones, so felt like mostly set-up.

The first book I really got wrapped up in this year was The Paper Magician, so much so that I actually - *gasp* - went and bought the next in the series (though now I'm afraid I jinxed it by buying it instead of getting it from the library).

You do the same thing I do. I read one book and listen to another.

message 20: by malrubius (new)

malrubius | 71 comments Yep. Always reading and listening. Sometimes I'll listen to non-fiction, too.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) MrsJoseph wrote: "That's great, though!! "

It is, really. I've had a good month - 3 4(ish)-star books in a row. I think this is practically unheard of!

message 22: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Michael | 572 comments The first fantasy book I read this year was The Future Falls (Gale Women, #3) by Tanya Huff . Third in the Enchantment Emporium series and was looking forward to it, but a bit of a disappointment.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Mine was a mediocre older mystery, Echoes of Mercy.

Frank | 4 comments Finally dove into The Lies of Locke Lamora. The Lies of Locke Lamora (Gentleman Bastard, #1) by Scott Lynch
Fantastic, as well as the follow up.

message 25: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) I really enjoyed Lies of Locke Lamora. I have yet to read the next book in the series, but I own it. Can't wait.

This was a 5-star read for me. Loved that whole series, as well as other series by Robin Hobb. She's one of my favourite fantasy authors.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Finally working on a different book!

The Rook - I'm about 100 pages in and I'm enjoying it so far.

It's was 5 stars for me too. It's was also my second attempt at trying Hobb's novels. I tried the first Liveship Traders novel but dropped it half way through and almost wrote off Hobb. But after Assassin's Apprentice, I definitely want to read more :)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Trying to decide between Karen Memory and Dragons at Crumbling Castle: And Other Tales.

ETA: It was also discovered that I have not read the Night Huntress series. After appropriate shaming, I was encouraged to make this series a priority.

carol. | 2616 comments I just have to say that I hope this is not anyone's "first book of the new year" any more...
