Voting for our August BOTM will go through 6/23 with announcement of winners announced on the 24th. Authors for August are Peake through Richardson. Everyone gets a free vote but you can use participation points up to 5 total votes including your freebie. Please feel free to try and persuade people to vote on books you really want to read. Send a PM to the Reading 1001 shelf personality or to me.

FYI: I had to buy a new phone, mine was so old and the 1001 app did not transfer and is no longer available in the app store. I will be working from an old phone where the app exist but it probably isn't updated to the new books that were added. If you see something missing, please let me know.

Tracy (tstan) | 559 comments Wow- I’ve read 35 of these.
The Clay Machine Gun by Pelevin is also called Buddha’s Little Finger, if anyone is having trouble finding it.

I've read 18. I have The Book of Disquiet. I think I don't really have any others of these that I haven't read.

message 4: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1679 comments I've read 27 of the 42 eligible books. Out of the 15 I haven't read yet, I'd be most interested in:

1) The Book of Disquiet (audio on scribd)
2) Life: a User's manual (ebook on scribd)
3)The Club Dumas (ebook on scribd)
4) One, none, and a hundred Thousand (audio on scribd)
5) Mysteries of Uldolpho (audio on librivox)
6) Forest of the Hanged (ebook on scribd)
7) Pamela (audio on librivox)

Since I'm trying scribd instead of audible right now, have a preference for books available there or on librivox, and am down for any of these. If other people than Kristel and I are feeling Book of Disquiet, I could def vote for that one.

message 5: by Pip (new)

Pip | 1822 comments I have read 18, And have no particular desire to read any of the others, so will leave others to vote.

message 6: by Liz M (new)

Liz M | 194 comments I think Good Morning, Midnight is the only book <600 pages not listed, but I see it was BotM in March 2018.

message 7: by Kristel (new)

Kristel (kristelh) | 5131 comments Mod
Liz, thanks for checking for me, yes, Good Morning, Midnight was omitted because it was a 2018 BOTM

Diane | 2044 comments I've read 33. Of the books already mentioned, I have access to:

Life, a User's Manual
Mysteries of Udolpho
Pamela

I am also interested in:

A Void
Misericordia
The Godfather (the book I most want)
the Last World
Vineland

I have not read The Godfather either would be happy to vote for that one. Also, we could do a buddy read if it doesn't win.

I have read 21 of these, a couple more if we include the Pynchons that are not listed. On my TBR shelf, I have The Club Dumas (Perez-Reverte) and the Gormenghast trilogy; however, I would not vote for Gormenghast as I haven't read Titus Groan. Probably would not support The Book of Disquiet as I want to read this in French (impossible to get in Australia, even through Amazon; they don't let me order in France or Canada). I could cheer for the Godfather though, especially if you have a proposition I can't refuse...

message 12: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2173 comments I have read 8 of these so as usual I am very open to almost anything but I would like to read Godfather. Other options would be Dumas Club and Life, A User’s Manual.

message 13: by Diane (new)

Diane | 2044 comments Sounds like a few of you are interested in The Godfather. I will be casting my votes for that one.

message 14: by Liz M (new)

Liz M | 194 comments I was planning on reading The Book of Disquiet: The Complete Edition in August already, so I might as well vote for it in hopes that it can do double-duty. :)

Cool, I'll def throw in for Book of Disquiet too then.

I've already read The Godfather (liked it a lot though) so I'll pass on voting for that one.

Looks like we could have an interesting month for voting. Don't forget to vote if you want to see your choice advance.

message 18: by George P. (last edited Jun 21, 2020 08:19AM) (new)

George P. | 725 comments I've read eleven, incl The Godfather a few years ago.
My #1 choice would be Life: A User's Manual- I bought a used copy in December but haven't gotten to it yet.
I'd also read either Rhys book, esp Quartet- I liked her Good Morning, Midnight.

Karen | 422 comments I have already read The Godfather and the Book of Disquiet this year. I gave them both 5 stars. I have also read Gormenghast this year - just 3 stars.

I loved the Book of Disquiet so much. I recommend the complete edition translated by Margaret Jull Costa (it is more complete than her earlier edition).

Not sure what I am going to vote for... Overall I have read 11 of these books.

Was a pretty close race but the winner is The Book of Disquiet: The Complete Edition.

Randomizer chose: The Clay Machine-Gun, 1996, 352 pages. AKA Buddha's Little Finger

TBR takedown announced tomorrow.

What will you be reading in August?

message 24: by Patrick (new)

Patrick Robitaille | 1602 comments Mod
Alas, I won't be reading either as I don't own them and I had them listed to be read in French. I can't order from Amazon France here in Australia; besides, my ordering experience with Amazon for books not physically available in Australia has been quite troubling. Today, I have finally received a book that Amazon had to ship from the US; it took TWO MONTHS to reach me...

So, in August, I will be reading my TBR pick and whatever else the randomizer throws at me (subject to availability).

message 25: by Diane (new)

Diane | 2044 comments I just read The Clay Machine Gun, so I won't be re-reading that. I read The Book of Disquiet last year, so I won't be re-reading that, either. I did love it, though. I would entertain the idea of hosting a buddy read for The Godfather, if anyone is interested.

You are making an offer I can't refuse. I'll join that Buddy Read too.

message 28: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 884 comments The Clay Machine Gun sound right up my alley! However, I can't really access it. Ah well, it can be added to my 'second hand book store' list of books to look for.

TBR it is then!

message 29: by Diane (new)

Diane | 2044 comments Awesome! I can't believe I never got around to reading it before this. The Godfather I and II are two of my all-time favorite movies ever.

message 30: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tstan) | 559 comments The Clay Machine Gun has been on my shelf forever. I’m looking forward to freeing up a space!

message 31: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2173 comments I have read The Clay Machine Gun so I will be looking for The Book of Disquiet and the Godfather

message 32: by Pip (last edited Jun 25, 2020 01:05AM) (new)

Pip | 1822 comments I won't be ordering from Amazon either, because I am getting cards sent from the U.S. almost 2 months ago arriving now. It is not Amazon's fault, there are so few planes flying to New Zealand, because the only people we are letting in are New Zealand citizens. So, I think I can get the Pelevin book on interloan from one of our universities, and the Book of Disquiet is available on Audible, so I plan to read them both.

The TBR # for August is # 11. I will be reading Oliver Twist, what will you be reading?

message 34: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2173 comments I am going to be reading Amsterdam.

message 35: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 884 comments My #11 is American Psycho. Luckily, it looks like I can get from the library.

message 36: by George P. (new)

George P. | 725 comments I want to read The Book of Disquiet, but I might not do so now, because only the university library here has it and they are totally closed. If I were more fluent in Spanish I could get the Spanish copy from the City system. Cheapest used copy in English I found so far is $13. Trying to read more of the books I have before buying more, at least when they're > $5. What does Audible subscription cost?

message 37: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1679 comments Audible os about 14$ a month, and it is also on scribd which is about 9$ a month for unlimited listening/reading. Either way, I think both have a month long free trial option.

message 38: by Pip (new)

Pip | 1822 comments My TBR is Tolstoy's The Death of Ivan Ilyich, which I thought I had on Kindle.

message 39: by George P. (new)

George P. | 725 comments Amazon notified me of a kindle edition of The Book of Disquiet for sale for $4, so I went ahead and got it. Translation is by M J Costa. So see you in August to discuss it.

message 40: by Pip (new)

Pip | 1822 comments Kristel, my copy of The Clay Machine Gun has arrived from interloan, and it needs to be returned by the 22nd of this month, so I can lead the discussion next month if no one else has volunteered yet.
